starting to make the game from scratch, i think it is only for next-gen comp only, as they prob be using the same engine version for ps2 but next-gen will be more powerful engine.

Na, there's bits they can keep from this one I reckon. The AI is ok, aside from positional sense and obviously goalkeepers.

I like playing with Milan in the Serie A on Pes 2008. I feel that just those who are more into the English league want more from the game cuz of the lack of lisencing. Its not that bad to be honest. I would like Konami to add to 2008 for next years version instead of starting fresh in 2009.

Complete overhaul needed I think.

How does the PS3 version play in comparison to the 360? Is it as kind of...sluggish as the 360?

PS3 is fairly quick, certainly compared to PES6. Only thing sluggish is the AI...

Definately agree it needs a total rebuild from the ground up.

In order of importance:

- Terrible AI, a step back from PES6, the volume of basic defensive errors is unbelievable. This is especially annoying when you're supposed to have world class centre-backs, yet they're making errors I would personally be ashamed of. The attacking AI has issues, yet they're more manageable than the defensive ones.

- Unresponsive controls, one of the most important features for PES since I started playing it years back was the fact that it did what you asked. I might not always make the right decision and I'm happy to give the ball away if it's my fault, I do however expect the game to do what I tell it to do, when I tell it to. If I press X before my player receives the ball, I expect him to pass the ball first time. This was a given on previous versions, yet now seems hit and miss.

- Animations, it seems the majority felt that Fifa have always had the edge in the graphics departments, I've always disagreed. One place I don't think PES's superiority can be disputed is the animations, this was always a strong point with player movements becoming increasingly realistic. Unfortunately the animations are rather lacklustre in PES 08 and need rectifying as watching a player's movement is key to predicting their next move.

- Online, I don't think there's anyone who would suggest the online mode is acceptable and most would agree it's pathetic. It's quite obvious that Konami need to ensure that lag is reduced to the level of other games, CoD4 for example is one of the most entertaining games online. Despite having between 8-20 players connected the lag is rarely an issue, even while having my PC connected in the background... and my housemate on his laptop. Were I to play PES under these conditions I'd be left with teleporting players and an unplayable experience. This is purely, unacceptable.

- Player Stats & Special Abilities, the special ability system needs to be scrapped, virtually every one of these abilities should be on a scale as with the other attributes. Mental abilities should be expanded and Goalkeepers should have a full set of statistics. Don't be lazy and tack these statistics on at the end in a single statistic. The average statistic should be moved to 50, the stat range is 1-99, yet few stats use more than 55-95. Someone with average passing should have 50 rather than 70, their in game ability shouldn't be effected, but we should have more variance in the statistics so that players can regain their individuality.

- Editting, though I think it's unlikely, we ought to have the same level of editting that was present in previous games. This nullifies the effect of the lack of licenses and shortage of teams.

- Graphics, again in my opinion Fifa has never had the edge, until now. I've always felt that Fifa's plastic player models and there stadiums that looked like they'd been cleaned with a giant jet wash never matched up to PES, gritty (perhaps unintentional) realistic look. Unfortunately, both next gen games have cartoon player models, and it's not good enough. Having seen some of the other sports games available on next gen consoles, I don't think it's acceptable from either game.

- Atmosphere, this game just isn't as fun as PES5/6, I used to play my mates and actually get excited toward the end of a close encounter. On this game I feel more like it's a case of trudging through the rest of the game to find out who eventually wins. This is reflected by the passionless crowd on the game... were Rooney to net a 95th minute long range volley to clinch the World Cup for England, I'd not be surprised to hear a solitary voice in the crowd utter: "Oh... we've just won the World Cup, is the Apprentice on tonight?"

- Pacing, the game seems to get stuck at a single tempo too often for me, it's not terrible but still needs work. The speed of the game needs to be more fluid so that it can truly ebb and flow.

- Presentation, I previously thought the presentation on PES was the weakest aspect but it's rather unimportant. The front menu says it all for me, it reminds me of the sort of thing I'd expect from one of those £4.99 cheap games you see on PS2 spinners in supermarkets. Whatever happened to modern and clean? The commentary is the only aspect of the presentation that has improved, yet this still need work.

- Licensing, this is relatively unimportant for me though more is always nice.

This was initially supposed to be a short post, but I don't see how they can rectify these issues without taking the game down to its barebones (or further) and rebuilding from there.

Bravo, spot on with that post. I always felt they had the balance between attack and defence spot on in PES5, then the World Cup happened and Seabass decided he wanted a more attack-minded game, completely missing the point of mastering the system and organizing your tactics in order to play a more offensive game. The last two games have been disappointments (though I'd be lying if I said I didn't find PES6 on the 360 quite enjoyable) but I do hold a small but firm hope for the '09 release, Seabass was very disappointed with the game upon release and practically gave a public outcry for Konami to pump more money into the series possibly to outsource a few aspects (graphics, physics, ect.?) in order for him and his team to focus on bringing the gameplay back to the pinnacle of the series. Besides, third time's the charm, they can't possibly get it wrong again... can they...?

I also agree with Original?, Konami must do much better. I mean, it is plain unacceptable that the PS2 versions of PES were better than the PS3 versions.

And yes, apart from starting from scratch and getting the movements right. Konami NEEDS to introduce NEW SKILLS/STATS, this is a MUST for any Next Gen Football game as; The Passing Skills are far too generic, the Shooting Skills are also too minimalistic, the Dribbling skills also need more depth, The Defensive Skills are ridiculously limited, the list goes on and on. Konami needs to re-invent the Old Gen system of stats and special abilities.

By the way, PES 2008 is simply laughable.. The game is ridiculously fast, everything depends on PACE rather then on "Tactical Skills" and "Techniqual Skills", the defenders have mediocre positioning, the shooting power is hugely overrated, No shielding of the ball at all, you can only play one style of Football effectively, crappy arcadish gameplay, etc, etc, etc..

I hope that Konami comes up with a proper Next Gen Football game soon. However, I think PES 2009 will be another huge disappointment.. starting from scratch, re-inventing themselves will definitely take more than a year. Maybe they'll prove me wrong, but I'm not expecting anything good for 2009.. maybe by 2010 we'll see a proper Football game.

Played the ps3 version of 2008 and must agree that the ps2 version is more playable than the PS3 version.
I expect total overhaul of 2008 (next gen)as it seemed like it was simply slapping a next gen facade on a ps2 game.

Screw the music. Get the game play down right. ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT IT'S REALISTIC.

And another thing, update the damn graphics. Use the power that PS3 and 360 give you and take advantage of it. We bought these systems got next gen and want what we can get out of it.

Get some realistic running motions. They look like clowns running down the pitch. Do mo cap, do something. Too robotic.

Slow down the game, it's way too fast and crosses across the field are also way too fast.

PES2008 is warming up to me but there are obvious things that are wrong with it but they can be fixed.

I am afraid of them starting from scratch they will ruin the entire thing and it'll be like EA Sports with Madden football, "Maybe next year we'll take a look into it."

Fix the things that are wrong with PES2008, no reason to start it all over again. You have a foundation, just fix it and build upon it.

get new commentators...and make the crowd more realistic and loud..this has probly been said but appart from the obvious gameplay problems these two things would help alot. Also some licenses which are not impossible to get, I know the Premier League would be impossible but get some like Nike and more pitchside sponsers etc and third kits and bring back the choice to mix and match the shorts, shirts and socks before a game
