Spamming of Speed Merchants/throughballs?

I must admit, I'm really enjoying this year's MLO but this past week I have been getting frustrated with the spamming of throughballs to speed merchant strikers.

Has anyone figured out to stop this? I have play with a back 3 so one of my defenders do intercept on an occassion but its difficult to when lowly rated teams have speed merchants like van der mirch (why konami??? i never heard of him before) and mphela (i'm from SA, hes not that quick in real life).

Unfortunately I don't think there is one perfect way to stop this, but I too would love to hear some opinions from people who feel they are well lined up tactically to deal with it. I think it also has to do with how you control the players on the pitch, e.g. what buttons you hold, and when on defence. The 3 CBs seems to work well by the way, so thanks for that. What your sliders are set to might also be important, especially how high your back line is and what your pressing is set to. Also, I recommend defenders with high defensive awareness stats and teamwork. All this though probably only helps slightly, since the problem seems to be with the game itself. Still, it is obvious that some teams deal with it better than others, so I want mine to be as well set up to combat the problem as possible.

The other question is whether a really fast defender would help, but my guess is that it would only help sometimes and not always.

Van Der Mirch is not a speed merchant, but yes he is fast. He is a fake/made-up player by Konami. Beginners or people at the early stage of MLO tend to purchase him, along with other fake players like Petrobenov & Negli, simply because they are cheap & effective.

I msut say that it can be frustrating playing against them, but as people start getting better teams they tend to offload these players. Not EVERYONE does though because they tend to fall in love with them.

I personally don't like the idea of having fake/made-up players in my team, so have never purchased any.

Has anyone tried using a sweeper to combat the through balls? Also, does attack/defence level have an effect? It seems to me that with it set to two bars, or one, the through ball is a little less effective, but of course it is harder for me to score that way as well.

I manage this problem by keeping an eye on the radar all the time. I start running back with my defenders as soon as I think that a through-ball is about to be played. It helps alot to have quick defenders. Slow defenders in this game will just get terrorized when coming up agaist the Ronaldo's & Eto's of the game.

I don't like the idea of having a sweeper as it means that I have reduce my attacking options. I have always played with 2 CB's. For me, attack is the best form of defence. If someone scores against me, I retaliate by scoring 2 or 3 against them, as my attack is pretty beefed up (OFF = 99). I tend to concede the first goal alot of the times but it doesn't mean shit to me because I have a habit of bouncing back straight away.

Yes I have noticed that teams that are lowly rated, have these "fake players" and they might not necessary be speed merchants but wow they are quick :p and pretty much destroy my defense with their speed. Its tough trying to play against teams like this!

I have given up on MLO it's just a through ball fest with no skill or build up play at all. Not how I want to enjoy pes.

Be careful what you wish for, an opponenet keeping possession and building up play can be just as frustrating. It's usually me, but I have played a few guys who knew how to pass the ball around, and let me tell you, there's nothing worse that getting your ass kicked, barely touching the ball the entire match, and with no excuse other than your own inadequacy.....luckily most people on MLO are long ball abusers.

IMO the only way thruball spamming can be stopped is from konamis end - make them more manual.

Or fix the bloody matchmaking filters so they actually work so manual players can eachother

Everyone has to put up with it, not only you. So if you're giving up because of it, it's because you're shit. Sorry mate, that's just the truth.

Increasing your pass assistance ( to maximimum ) helps counter the through ball indeed !, high back line ( bizaare as it sounds ) although you will need Perea or Onuah at the back to catch quick ones. Don't set your match setting to choosing ppl of a similar level as this only pits you against the highest rated players, yes wierd. In other words, mess around til you find your liking.

Interesting. What are your settings like in terms of sliders? Do you play long ball, possession, or quick counter...?

this is the most annoying thing in the game, players just aimlessly press on the through pass, however i have managed to find solutions for that problem, of course bugs happen but i have managed to reduce the cause a lot with this, the steps are:

- I play with a team with good CB defenders in the back for example Juventus, Chelsea, Barcelona, usually i play with 3 CBs in the back in one line inside the box in front of the goalkeeper.
- Depending on the opposing team i either play with two DMFs or one DMF and a low MR; the perfect would be to choose player who are good in both positions like pirlo, de rossi ... etc.
- now i play with hight pressure; actually full pressure as i am a control freak; and with very high defensive line; 18 or 19 and medium compactness
- the most important factor now is to keep always an eye on the radar and switch whenever you lose the ball to one of the players in the back and then assign AI defense for the player approaching the ball, a good balance between AI defence and manual one is also important as you do not want all your players to go towards one player and leave empty spaces especially if that player has transparent qualities like christiano or messi !!
- Another thing is that when you are controlling your player manually in the radar make sure he is behind the marking player; towards the goalkeeper i mean; as when the through ball is passed he will move forward; if he was stuck to the player HE MIGHT LOSE IT
- applying offside trap is a solution but a tricky one
- another thing is that when a through pass is made; or the super aimless pass do not try to control it with the defender and dribble, what i do most is directly trying to pass back to the goalkeeper or one of the nearby teammates so that there will be no pressure from the attacker
- Use R2 --> R2 is good in close up battles or when you wish to manually position the player to intercept

Hope this was helpful :)

Clearly that depends on the opposition frontline formation but as a rule of thumb pressing and defensive line are similar normally about 16. If the opposition weak then 20. I play possesion but with players that can play counter and play long balls. Mixing it up makes it difficult to read and as you know it's easy enough to cope with through balls if you know that is what they will do all the time. Playing 3 cb's can be awkward when you're expecting a through ball as you waste valuable seconds shuffling through them trying to find PEREA!

Thanks. Much appreciated.

How about the actual level of your defensive line in the team formation screen. Are they mid way, near the mid way line, or back hanging out in their own 18 yard box?

Also, do you use offside trap or man marking? Man marking seems to help, but not sure about offside trap yet. It would seem like it might help stop the problem when mixed with a high def line, but I need to try it more to be convinced that it's the way to go.

They sit just outside the 18 yard box.

I swear by the offside trap. It tends to work best when catching the RWF/LWF offside [as you can always cover if you timed it wrong]. When you start playing offside you get more familiar with when and where it's safe to do it.
Man marking only if they have a stand out player or players you know are in fixed positions. Like if they have Drogba up front you know he isn't going to move from the centre so it's safe to mark him.

Alot depends on the level of pass assistance your opponent has, why give them the advantage?

Well, it doesn't seem to be working that well for me so far... I have to try with sidebacks instead of four at the back first though before I give up. Four CBs leaves the wings way too exposed.

er yeah, no 4 cb's. Side backs are key. Flat back 4, attacking full backs. Don't get too proccupied with defense though as attack is a great form of defense. Use every option available. Like I said, pass assistance is evereything online.

It shows Konami have no interest in making it a patient build up game when they invent the likes on van Der mirch, they've just no idea what they're doing. Lazy, one track minded & ignorant to what the fan base want.
