The future of the Veteran status

Due to the lack of votes for admins from veterans and the departure of many, I'm fully in favour of restructuring the entire list of vets as there are current members who deserve it far more.

Just thought I'd mention it to see what other people's views are. This isn't a case of removing the vet status from all members who were great years ago and aren't around anymore but its long been believed in the Veterans area that there are too many and we ought to cut back. I mean if someone hasn't logged in for over two years they're either dead or just not coming back. Its not going to be a popular decision with certain members who lose their veteran status but I actually don't care about that.

The term 'veteran' implies some history with the site, which is not something that can be taken away. Feel free to get rid of them and create new ones, but change the name if you're going to do that.

Thank you for reading.
I was wondering about the veterans the other day actually.

When were the last group made into veterans? In fact are people made veterans in a group or just when they're seen to be worthy?

Might do that. Its just that the whole thing got fucked up when a whole influx of members were made vets around two years ago - and most of the existing vets stopped visiting the site. Plus, we've got the Hall of Fame thing for that now.

I've been one of a few members completely against the introduction of more because we ended up with way too many and it lost its "specialness". I believe that's been the case for around two years now as I recall opposing any new additions throughout most of 2008.

I agree with Alvin, the Vets shouldnt lose there status because they are not active anymore, they are vets because they helped the site to grow and without them the site probally wouldnt be what it is today so they do deserve some recognition although I suppose the Hall of Fame is exactly that.

But the point is, that's not what they are anymore. Too many people got awarded with it. The Hall of Fame will reward the best of them but the veteran thing became too easy to acquire and we all wrecked it.

At one stage all you had to do was post lots for around three months before you had people fighting your case. That isn't what it should ever have been.

To me it isn't, in its current form, needed at all on the forum. It should, in a sense, be the sort of thing from which any new mods and admins are hand-picked from. Members whose proven themselves in that sort of sense.

Ah, no wonder that I never got the veteran status. I haven't done anything that's considered historic in this forum.

Could simply scrap the whole idea of it.

Have "Hall Of Fame" members (obviously very limited). With this, there could be an extra section at the bottom of the Forum Index with "Hall Of Fame", stating which members are exclusive to this, and also threads which deserve to be remembered in the "Hall Of Fame". Imagine simply being able to look back through classic threads with such ease, Zygalski kidnapped?, Haribo comes out of the closet etc etc.

To coincide with this, we could also have a "Hall Of Shame" area just beneath, with some truly embarressing moments on the forum, e.g. Poffeman eats tabasco sauce etc.

Excellent idea.

I agree with hunter; something akin to restructuring the current inactive vets into "legends" for the likes of zygalski, hitman et al but keeping vet status for the currently active members.

I'm in favour of restructuring. Just don't lose that "specialness" you mentioned before by inducting to many members.

Why not just post a list of vets in the veteran area, and we all decide who should keep the bar, who shouldn't and who is to be inducted into the Hall of Fame instead?

Fair idea. About time something went on in the Vets area :faceplm:.

However, I'll say now I don't want many users at all in the Hall of Fame - that's something we don't want ruined.

I agree. A select few each year I say (3 maximum, more likely 1 or 2). Who are the current inductees to the Hall of Fame?

Best idea so far and as Sweey said something to do in the Vets Area.

If only I browsed the forums via categories rather than the New Posts button, I wouldn't have made myself look a complete fool like I did just then.

You could also have added to the end of that that you would "be here for a week without reading everything."
