There's something fishy going on....

I've been playing PES2008 on the PS3 for 2 weeks now (pretty much non-stop because I've been off work) and I was fairly disappointed with the lagging issue but I'm starting to get used to it now. I've started a few leagues and I'm about 3/4 of the way through a Serie A season with Juventus.

From playing in this league (on top player) I've noticed a few very strange and incredibly annoying things going on.

At times, the computer player seems to be able to just score at will and this is nearly always as a result of a free kick or a corner. I'm honestly not exaggerating here, but in my experience the computer will score from about 8/10 free kicks(either directly or indirectly) that they get around the box. Its doing my 'effing head in!

The same goes for corners. It doesn't seem to matter how well I am playing, more often than not, the computer player will score from a corner or a freekick.

I know it sounds like I'm whinging, but I cant seem to ignore it. I actually think this is the hardest Pro Ev one player mode ever, which is a really good thing and I've had some cracking games on it. But more often than not I feel completely robbed when I lose.

Anyone else notice this, or is it just me going a bit mental?

I have noticed this but iv not looked at it negatively, its this new team vision, the computer is much more pro active to get back into a game, for instance i was 1-0 up against chelsea in the 40th minute, they were playing rubbish, and in the 42min off came wright phillips and on goes shevchenko i held 1-0 till half time and the second half chelsea were all over me because i didnt react to the change made by chelsea i ended up loosing 3-1, like you said you have some cracking matches, some call it konami making the computer cheat, but i think its great, it makes it much much more exciting to play a game against the computer compared to previous releases where playing the computer was very dull and repetative.

Corners are defendable in most cases, look around the forum for some good advice. Moving your CBs to position has been tweaked a bit from PES 6. The two best advices I found were 1) manually move a CB to the area around the nearer post, so he can clear the ball if it goes short, and 2) when challenging an attacker, don't move your CB until the ball is close, then move him to position quickly and head it. In PES 6 it was easier to move your player in front of the attacker as soon as possible, but if you do it now it gets you CBs out of position.
Don't remember who posted these hints, sorry.

Short and mid range FKs, when the AI decides to shoot, are unstoppable. Dragonfly suggested not conceding them in the first place, which can prove hard when you have the original ML team and you have to stop Eto'o, but it gets easier with some good defenders and a somewhat solid DMF. Look for good defending tips here: http://www.pesgaming.com/showthread.php?t=54124. In my last 5 games, for instance, I've kept a clean sheet.

In general, you'll find the game is too easy. As soon as you stop conceding as many goals, you'll easily win the league. My worst season (ended up 10th) I had 20 more goals than any other team, but the problem was that I had conceded almost as many. Now that I've improved my defensive game, I sky rocket to the 1st place and stay there for the whole league.

Good stuff, I'll deffo look into this because it was getting a bit silly. In one game, I was Real Madrid against Barcelona in the Copa del Ray Semi Final. Over the 2 legs Ronaldinho scored 4 direct free Kicks and another goal was scored when he hit the bar and it was tapped in.....It just felt futile trying to win the game.

Please understand that I'm not moaning. I think its great that its hard. Any game that makes you shout and swear, then go in a huff.....then makes you pick up the controller and keep on playing is great fun. It would be boring if it was easy.

I always use triangle to get my keeper to cheat wall side right before free kick. Now ive only played 8 games Master Leauge but let me know if you use that or if that helps the keeper at least save some of them :p. I figure the better the player taking it the more impossible to stop him though :(.

I just put Liebermann in defense and haven't let in a corner since! Seriously, in my 3rd seasan now, replaced Liebs with Raul Albiol and been fine. Just sign a tall CB :)

I've scored a lot of corners actually, and i've got Lita and Lua-Lua, not exactly tall players, it seems to be working in reverse for me!

You can't really prevent the Computer scoring from free-kicks on the edge of the box, it's like a certainty. I begin to get worried now and believe my game is broke if they don't curl the ball into the top corner. You should feel robbed too, because that's all the Computer can do to score really, instead of actually raising the difficulty, Konami have just implemented what I like to call "every-Computer-player-can-dribble-like-Maradona-and-take-a-free-kick-like-David-Beckham." It's driving me crazy the blatent scripting and cheating this game possesses, it's ridiculous and obvious why people are taking it back.

In past versions, if you were quick eneough you could move a defender back onto the line and he'd head it away, but in PES2008 they just let the ball drift past them. Very tricky

I hate it when I position someone right by the post and then he just stands there as the ball glides by 2 cm away from him. If I wanted that to happen, I'd have assigned him to the wall.
