Those who are also playing FIFA 10

Hi All,

If this is the wrong thread in the wrong forum, I apologise. Please redirect me to the right forum.

Like many of you, I am a hardcore PES fan. But this year, I wanted to try out FIFA *as well*. Last time I played FIFA was in 2002 on PC. I hated everything about FIFA that year that I withdrawn myself from soccer gaming for 2 years. But then I found Winning Eleven (it used to called Winning Eleven in North America, and never looked at FIFA again).

This year, I bought FIFA 10. After hearing all of you guys saying that one should at least try it out, I finally got the game for PS3. I don't want to religiously support PES and I don't want be blind to FIFA.

But honestly, I am yet to find the thrill in soccer gaming with FIFA. I don't yet have PES 2010 so I don't know how it would be (although I will definitely get it). One of the biggest thing that it seem to be missing is the individuality of the players in the pitch. It does not seem that players have scoring style - sagna, arshavin, fabregas, van persie all scoring the same way. And the visual or the audio feedback in scoring is really poor - I don't get the thrill in scoring a goal.

I know PES 2008 was the worst that could happen to PES. But PES 2009 was not bad. I loved PES 2007, PES6 and all other previous versions. For some reason, FIFA is not doing it for me.

Am I wrong? Am I missing something?

BTW, those who are PES gamers, do you guys change the controller setting in FIFA? Does it work well with the trick button? I think EA made the controller setting that best suited FIFA style game play. So for the best experience, one should try out FIFA in the original settings, no? (except of course switch the shoot and lob button - which is ok I think)

You are not missing anything. I was playing Fifa 10 and got PES 2010 on the PC while I wait for the ps3 version to come out here and I honestly can't go back to Fifa now.

I actually prefered Fifa 09 over PES 09 but this year it's the other way around again.

Individuality is missing in fifa yes and it's missing big time in comparison with pes. But fifa has better passing. Overall you play what you like best.

I totally disagree. I can perfectly tell the difference between an Anelka goal and say a Van Persie goal :/

Maybe you should try and play it on a harder level (I don't mean this in a patronising way). I'm playing on World class and i'm playing as Birmingham, the team I support. And I find it incredibly hard to score goals, which means they are all the more sweeter when I do score :D

End of the day, if you prefer PES play PES, if you prefer FIFA play FIFA. There are no rules on which game you should play, contrary to what some people on this site may think.

Have you tried all the different modes? One of the main things that attracted me to FIFA was the promise of lagless online play. This adds another level of the game for me, because online on PES2009 was unplayable, so I got FIFA instead.

Also the Virtual Pro mode is great, because you can make your character and play with him in every single mode on the game.

And thats all without mentioning the Manager Mode which comes standard. Granted its nowhere near as good or addictive as Master League, but whatever right.

Like I said, try all the different game modes, including online :D

Also, i'm a PES player, always have been since last year and this year, and i'm used to the PES control's (Square to shoot, Circle to cross), and I swap the controls on FIFA to match that.

Fifa takes time. You need to experience it without it being on assisted controls.

At least try semi or if you really want to push it, try manual.

To me it plays like the pes of old without the niceness of the pes camera angles and stadium graphics.

I was playing as Liverpool last night and those that say theres no individuality, ill compare the two Torres in Fifa and Pes this year.

The Torres in fifa moves like Torres. He has the speed. And he has that uncanny balance and knack of knocking and running with the ball i witness week to week as a LFC regular. Last night i was playing Fulham and he ran with the ball whilst being barged left right and centre, and although he stumbled he fought them off whiclst keeping his balance. he was eventually tackled but it was amazing to watch in the replay.

In Pes hes just another player. Hes not all that fast and as you cant really dribble and you dont have the 360 movement he feels stiff. From a distance he probably looks more like Torres because of the broadcast cam is closer and teh graphics are nicer in Pes. But as playing as him he isnt a patch on the Fifa version.

Gerrards the same. You only know its Gerrard by looks alone, not individuality.

I think a lot of players get mixed up with how a player LOOKS on screen and how a player plays on screen. because dribblers and speed merchants on Pes dont get any benefit from the dated engine.

Thanks for you comments. I will definitely have to spend some major gaming time with FIFA!

Cool. But what about the shoulder buttons. Did you move around R1 for running (like in PES). What about L2?

Oh yeah sorry forgot about that.

Yeah I switch the controls so that R1 is sprint, and R2 is the Finesse shot. Along with the shooting and crossing, slide tackle and 2nd man press switching from Square to Circle, I left everything else alone.

So as to not confuse you, this are the changed controls I use in FIFA;

Shooting :square:

Lob Pass :circle:

Slide Tackle :circle:

2nd Man Press :square:

Sprint :R1:

Finesse Modifier :R2:

You can see how they are basically the default Pro Evolution control set up :D

When I play FIFA 10 I pretty much did what Dale C did, except my team was Coventry City.

My personal opinion is that this year's games are equally good. Sure... PES does things better than FIFA, but then FIFA does some things better than PES. Like Ant said, you need to give FIFA some time, much like you needed to give PES some time when you first started playing that.

The mode you'll want to spend time on the most in FIFA is definitely Virtual Pro, which piddles all over PES's BAL mode. Manager Mode is okay, but nowhere near as good as Master League. Everything else is fine once you master FIFA's style of play.

That's my tuppence worth.

The differences between FIFA and PES are quite a culture shock. I have always found them to be quite the contrast to one another. I believe that is why both games have survived in the market, while others have fallen by the wayside. They offered up differing tastes on the same dish, while both maintaining a touch of quality, so to speak. It takes time to adjust, to get on the same wave length as the game, especially if you have been a loyal buyer of the rival franchise.

That doesn't mean you're going to necessarily like it but, it allows you to time to adjust to the differences in movement, passing, shooting, dribbling, heading, tackling, etc, while becoming more accustomed to the game modes, camera angles, visuals, and even the sound. Out of the aspects I have just mentioned, I prefer FIFA in all, apart from perhaps shooting. But that may not be the case for everyone.

I also play FIFA with a semi-assisted/manual control scheme, on "World Class" difficulty. It provides a refreshing challenge that packs much more realism than PES ever has, if I am brutally honest.

Initially I could not see the differences between players on FIFA, either. But after putting more game time in it becomes more noticable. My friends and I choose Tottenham (random choice) as our club on Manager Mode, and in time we saw how the pace of Lennon was a real bonus, the ability of Crouch to hold up the ball and win flick-ons shone through, and the plain as day fact that David Bentley is damn well useless in comparison to Modric and Kranjcar was glaringly obvious.

I can't comment on how well PES 2010 captures player individuality but, previous versions were excellent at this, even if PES 2008 and 2009 hindered any player without high pace and agility. But there is a degree of individuality to be found in FIFA 10, it's just not instantly as apparent.

BTW, those who are PES gamers, do you guys change the controller setting in FIFA? Does it work well with the trick button? I haven't settled on a control scheme, yet. But I do not use the default controls. I always put Shoot and Call 2nd Defender on square. With Cross and Slide Tackle on circle. Sprint is R1. Lob is L1. And I'm still to decide between Pace Control and Finesse Shot, in regard to R2 and L2. I think I prefer Pace Control on L2 (after trying it on R2 for a while) as it feels more comfortable, and easier to hold L2 while moving the right analogue.

couldn't agree more, fifa tends to get reeeeally boring quickly if you play on easier or normal difficulty settings, on the harder settings is a complete new game!

My biggest gripe with fifa is that midfielders like the xavi's, fabregas's etc. isn't nearly as influencial in a game as they should be, and does the general gameplay favour teams like chelsea with big, fast and powerful players. A player like Messi isn't nearly as usefull as bigger players.

Maybe I just suck?

Al things considered I really enjoy Fifa and doesn't even consider buying PES this year. Although Fifa has many flaws, the overall package is really impressive and enjoyable.
