Why has PES become more arcadey?

General consensus is that it has become more arcadey. How is this a good thing? I thought that one of the reasons PES was so popular was because it felt like real football.

It's a good question. I think it could have started with FIFA fans converting to PES, and preferring over FIFAs old arcadish gameplay but criticising PES for the elements of FIFA that they missed? Just a theory.

Another theory is that they are basically working on the same game every year which cannot be an easy or fun task. I think they have become "stuck in a rut" with the series. It's becoming more and more monotonous for them to create. They mastered the previous console generation with a fantastic engine and they have tried to recreate the same engine with the next gen, hoping that it will bail them out. They seem to have a "will this do" mentality. Perhaps in the time they are given to create the game, the easier option is to create a more arcade style game, as a simulation would take more time and care to develop presumably. Next gen games require so much more work than previous gens. It's all new(ish) to them.

I know that EA are a much bigger company, and this is a strong factor for Konami to compete with, but FIFA has made huge leaps since they ditched the development team that made the game stale and mouldy between 2000-2006/7. I am not suggesting that Konami sack the team, BUT I am saying that they should go totally back to the drawing board. Rumour has it that they have been doing just that since 2007, releasing what they can for now ("will this do") so they can put more effort into the new engine for 2010. Time is the other issue, and I guess only time will tell if the big 2010 rumour is true.

For now I am happy to play this game for a year and I think it will last (unlike 2008)... But my thread is wearing thin.

I totally refute the idea that pes has become more "arcadey". Yes pes 2008 had some symptoms of this but look at the change in pes 09. There are so many ways of scoring goals, endless possibilities in comparison to Fifa. Its like the pes of old The feeling of pes is completely organic and recreates football at its best.

Pro is a true reflection and recreation of football.

Arcadey? I laugh..........

How would you define "arcadey"

Just out of interest...

I see arcade as a highly attacking game. Pes 2008 was like that but pes 09? No way. It's excaclty like pes 5 in terms of pace and defense but slightly better attack. That's not an arcade for me.

For those who are old enough "ARCADE" was the name of the place that you went to play videogames. My local was called Barneys and had all the classics from that time.So when people describe game as being arcadey i dont understand what they mean.Old arcade classics such as wonderboy, tetris, streetfighter etc were not trying to replicate reality like todays games. They were made for enjoyment simple as.

They'd make a killing in a pub.

Winner stays on!

Definitely! That would have been great, had they had these over here in pubs and what not.

Edit: Actually, I remember seeing an old PES/WE in an arcade, but they're the old skool ones people go too when they're bored out of their asses when waiting for the movie to start at the cinema which is just next to it. :\

Arcadey to me means anyone can pick it up and play it - if it was placed in an arcade, it would be a popular choice as people wouldn't struggle to enjoy it/play it.

In terms of PES being "arcadey", by my definition it certainly is easy to pick up and play, moreso than FIFA which takes some getting used to. But whether that makes it a better more enjoyable game is another matter. I remember when PES was difficult to adjust to, but once you worked it out, it was way more rewarding. Genrally FIFA used to be the one anyone could pick up and play and score goals. PES seems to be more that way now.

Have to disagree with you a bit because some of the old classics i played back then were'nt games that anyone could play and finish. You needed practice like any game to become good and a shit load of 20p s.

PRO has definitely gone down the 'arcadey' route. As Kev puts it, 'arcadey' is somehting that you generally just pick up and play and I would agree with that sentiment. PRO has definitely gone down that route and the game is poorer for it.

It was the depth in the actual gameplay that PRO had that made it more true to the life than any other game. PES2008 took a different step down the arcade route. A real step backwards, and 2009 looks essentially the same game without the jitters and slightly more polished graphics, and few new other additions which means bugger all because PRO has lost that gameplay it used to have, and that is the most important thing.

For all of Fifa's 'pretty makeup' and licenses, at gameplay level it is still not as good as any of the PS2 versions of PRO and that's a fact.

Since last year PRO has lost its identity and PES2009 will not put that right.
