Why PES is better than FIFA but still needs improvement

I have been playing PES for four years and have played every game going back to WE6.

What I like about PES:

PES pays attention to some details that give it a good feel. Players bring balls down in different ways. Sometimes with their feet, sometimes with their chest etc. Players attempt to trap passes that are just out of reach. This is a nice touch. Keepers go after loose balls. Fast restarts are a nice detail.

The game has many creation and editing options that allow you to customize the game to your liking.

What I do not like about PES:

All players seem to have a bad first touch. Every pass seems to get away from the receiving player causing a great number of frustrating turnovers.

Passing seems to be very inaccurate. About 50% of the time the ball does not reach the player I intend it to reach. Most often the ball travels to a further away player. This kills the offensive buildup.

Heading the ball is very inaccurate. The ball almost always travels to far away, in the wrong direction, or to the opposing team.

Defenders always seem to be able to close down a player on the ball during a breakaway. Even the fastest attacker gets caught. This seems unrealistic.

Set pieces are very random. I would like targeting and a 3-click system similar to older golf games.

Players start making runs and as soon as you go to pass the ball they stop running. Very frustrating.

It is very difficult to get players to make quick 1-2 passes.

Reaction time of players is bad. The computer's players always react quicker to loose balls. The worst is just after a set piece. The player who kicks the ball seems to freeze for 3 seconds while the defense picks up the ball and cointer attacks.

On the harder levels the defenders are constantly closing down the attacker. This does not accurately reflect real football.

On goal kicks the defender always seems to be able to hold his position. In real football players jostle a bit more.

What I would add to PES in the future:

More variety in dribbling. Some players should be able to control the ball better depending on the situation and the pressure. Defenders break up plays way too easily.

Have some players who try to disrupt a restart or free kick by standing over the ball or by forming a wall too close to the ball and having to be directed by the ref where to stand.

Handballs.

Elbows on headers that injure the other player temporarily.

Heads hitting together on headers that cause temporary injuries.

Tactics should be tightened up. Most of the time they can be ignored entirely because they don't seem to influence the gameplay.

Tutorials that help you to learn different formations and how each player functions within the formation.

Variable weather depending on locale.

The game needs to be paced better to reflect the ebb and flow of football. Constant attacking and defending is irritating. A team that is pressing the game should not be able to do it for the entire match. Defenders should be more concerned about positioning rather than closing down constantly.

Finally, why PES is better than FIFA:

Like many on this forum I have spent a number of hours playing football video games and watching and playing real football. Despite the improvements FIFA has made in recent years it is still mostly presentation. The gameplay is horribly sluggish and way too predictable. There are too many exploits that make the game no fun to play.

While PES is a better game, my own conclusion is that there is currently no football game that plays great AND is fun to play. There are just too many frustrating things that make these games seem more like work.

This year I will not be buying a football game until I have been able to play it enough to see if it is a major improvement over recent games. I normally buy both FIFA and PES each year, but this year IF I buy a game it is going to be one that plays great AND is fun to play. Otherwise I can already get enough frustration out of the 2009 versions that I already own.

Hope this helps. Thanks for the voice.

I don't agree with you...

Quick one-two passes are very easy to do, in fact it barely requires any thinking at all. Very easy, ridiculously easy. And as Defenders we have a huge disadvantage.

I also don't see how Defenders break-up play too easily... In my opinion Attackers have a huge advantage over Defenders. So I really do not see why Attacking and scoring goals should be easier. If anything, it should be a lot harder.

My suggestions:

* Off-the-ball movement needs to improve, we need to have more control over it... to this day it's all about Passing the ball and then Taping R2 and then Passing the ball back. It is very easy to do, and it is one-dimensional as we have no say in How the Player runs off-the-ball.

* New Stats for off-the-ball movement and work-rate. If we are to have more control over the off-the-ball movement, it will be necessary to have stats for off-the-ball movement and work-rate. For how 'well' an individual runs off-the-ball and How 'much' an individual runs off-the-ball.

* The old "Arrows" system needs to change in-game... Effectively dictating the "momentum" of the game. It should affect both Team performances and Individual performances. And it would be fitting to have an in-game 'Confidence Level Gauge' to represent the confidence level of each individual. The sum of all the individuals within a Team will equal the overall Team Confidence level -and- the momentum will be in favor of the team with more confidence.

* The momentum would vary depending on Team Confidence Levels. For example, Man Utd haves a 50% Confidence Level and Barcelona haves a 90% Confidence Level: in this scenario, the advantage/momentum will be very noticeable. On the other hand, if Man Utd haves a 80% confidence and Barcelona haves a 90% confidence: in this scenario, the momentum will be very balanced, but because both teams have "good confidence" the quality of play will be of the highest quality.

* The Animations need a massive upgrade, a very massive upgrade.

* The 8 Directional Gameplay needs to be upgraded. The game needs to move on from the d-pad, the d-pad can only go in 8 directions... therefore whenever the angle of a shot or pass is too intricate for the d-pad to handle -the- COM needs to improvise: Luck. Upgrading to 16 Directional Movement will lessen the Luck Factor. The Random Nature of Football Should make the game feel unpredictable, without the need of excessive COM improvising.

That's my two cents.

The first touch and passing points I particularly agree with. Players can't control the ball, holding the precision dribbling button slows your player down to a pace a bit faster than a crawl, which is extremely un-realistic, and passes are very inaccurate. The passing system in ISS 64 is probably better than the one in PES 09. Both of these are major issues hampering gameplay and sorting them out would improve PES 2010 to no end.

Yeh plus, attackers shouldn't be allowed to walk directly through the atoms of a defender, it just doesn't happen in real life!
