Xbox 360 vs PlayStation 3: Graphics Comparison

There have been alot of arguments over the course of last year about which console has the better graphics. Gamespot have recently put an article together going through various games out on both systems and have posted up screenshots to show you the graphical differences between the two machines. Some may be shocked to learn, but the graphics from the 360 are better than the PS3 on almost all the games they tested.

Simply role the Mouse cursor over the 360 image to reveal the PS3 visual.

eek! 360 lighting looks much better in Need for Speed, but im too used to the PlayStation controls, and correct me if im wrong but Sony have kept the same controllers that were used on the PS2. Thanks for that though

Thats what i was like mate, i've always owned a PS1 and PS2, bought my 360 3 months ago and adapted to the ntrols very quickly.

When is/was the PS3 released? I didnt really keep track, ive got a shed load of money to spend so I might be getting one of the two consoles soon.

It's not officially released over here until March i think. To be fair on the PS3 though, you won't see it reach it's full potential in terms of games for a while yet. The 360 has only really just started to release jaw dropping games in the fall of 2006, this year will be such a exciting year for gamers around the world. The PS3 hits our shores in the near future, GTA 4, Resident Evil 5, Halo 3, PES7 plus many more i can't think of at the moment.

Indeed. Halo 3 looks awesome and i'd never heard about a GTA4, ill wait around for a bit and see how things go.

xbox 360 is taking-off here in south africa during the festive period, a guy even tried to convince me ps3 (which is not out here) claims to have played on one that it is a big, heavy machine, games load slower than xbox 360 and graphics are poorer.
But I'm still waiting for ps3 both machines are similar and it just comes down to preference as the article states.

The graphics are of a similar standard, don't be silly the difference is majorly the level of light a source develops. As for the 360 winning on 'almost all of the games' compared, was it not just Need for Speed shown in the comparison.

Also the development time for 360 has been longer and developers know more of the system, I'm not saying the PS3 is far better but try to think.

To me, the PS3 graphics looked a bit more blury than 360's, also as Original? mentioned, there is a difference in lighting. I preffer PS3's lighting, but I don't like the bluriness.

I'm not going to get a PS3 anyway, so it doens't bother me too much.

Actually, after looking at all the screenshots, I prefer 360's lighting. PS3's is a bit much on certain games.

Sorry to be the party pisser here but are graphics really that important? Sure they look nice and in some games they look quite stunning but deep deep down all we long for is a decent game. The old GTa series and Worms had some shoddy graphics but did enough to let you know what was happening and the gameplay was mega. On the other side of the coin some games look graphically stunning but have the gameplay of an ME suffering sloth i.e FIFA.

All I am saying is I do like a nice set of graphics but for me the game has to be good first and foremost. Sorry for the sharing of my views.

You're right about the blurriness on some shots, but on others the PS3 looks sharper on certain areas. In any case if the lighting is lower on the PS3 then it stands to reason that it's more blurred as it's harder to pick out details in darker conditions.

Call of Duty 3 appears to be the exact opposite so if you favour NFS on the 360, you should therefore prefer COD3 on the PS3. Marvel and NBA both have dire graphics, FNR3 looks nicer on the PS3, TH is better on the 360. Tiger Woods is very similar, but I feel the vegetation is nicer on the PS3 especially the last shot.

I'd say it was rather more even than is being implied, I'd also like to know the set-ups of each system.

We're going to give the PS3 the benefit of the doubt in this initial round since developers might need more time to figure out how to maximize performance from the Cell and the RSX. If you look at the Xbox 360's first Madden game, Madden 06, you'll notice that it doesn't offer very realistic stadium shadows, either. The trouble with buying a console at launch is that you often have to wait for the second or third generation of games for the system to fulfill its potential. The PS3 didn't beat the 360 in this first comparison, but the games do look fine for first-generation titles. The real graphics battle will likely come next year.

Well Im completley stuck on what to get. It all depended on the controller for me as the athritus in my hands has formed to fit a Playstation pad perfectly. But the price is ridiculous and the news it wont be reduced for sometime will probably have its hand in me being impatient enough to buy a 360

XBOX 360 is already released in USA + Asia which is a joke IMO...why the fuck cant they just give it to us Europeans aswell! Although you could import one from America/Japan and they'll work over here in the UK plus all the games are Region Free

I might just get a 360 then maybe Christmas 07 buy a PS3...because all the games being released for PS3 are also coming to XBOX 360 apart from Gran Turismo and Metal Gear(which might actually come to XBOX to)

Great Comparison there. Overall, Im glad I've chosen the Xbox 360 over the PS3 as it's 10 times better then I thought. Graphics overall, I should say, are very close, if not, the same. Lighting overall is better on the Xbox 360 according to them pictures. Im not one to pick Graphics over Gameplay, although Graphics does make it look great. Yet again, great comparison.

The PS3 has been just released. The Xbox 360 has been out for over a year. As Original mentioned, the developers know more about the 360 than the PS3, so the graphics obviously look better at the moment.

If you compare the Xbox 360 launch game graphics with the PS3 launch games, the PS3 wins hands down.

Full Auto 2 (released somewhere near the PS3 launch date) on PS3 looks better than Full Auto on Xbox 360 (released somewhere near the 360 launch date).

I don't really see too much of a difference in the graphics between the two, although the 360 looks marginally better. The lighting for Fight Night looks better on the 360 but the boxers look more detailed on the PS3.

People seem to forget that the PS3 was originally scheduled for a March release, just a few months after 360, before being pushed back due to production. It's not like the PS3 developers started their games a year later. There's no excuse for Resistance, a game that was intended to be a March release title, to look like shit given it had an extra 6 months or so tacked on to its production span.
