Exactly. I dont know about a full gauge but the timing and the angle are extremely important. I always try to line up the player diagonally when going for goal.

Excellent point. I think that shot power is more important when it comes to accomplishing this kind of thing. All you have to do is almost max out the gauge and aim at the middle of the goal, because what you are trying to accomplish is lob the keeper not go for the top corner.
