Half the problem is that the default players are, to put it simply, shit! If you buy a decent striker, and you are managing to play the game ok the goals should start coming.

Hold R2 to slowly move, or the super cancel (R1+R2) to move quickly. R2 is usually more effective cos he only moves a little bit rather than darting off with the supercancel. Super cancel is best to chase a through ball, or move to catch on the chest.
