Are you checking the formations by playing Master League? Try playing an exhibition match. If you were using ML, you may have to start a new ML to see your changes. Thread moved to a more relevent section (as it isn't about hints and tips).

I've not played it on the Wii so apologies if this doesn't help. On other versions of the game, free kicks and corners can be affected by holding down the 'down' direction which makes the long pass fizz along the ground. Be sure you're not pressing the down direction.
