I have started using manual pass for through balls, its always tempting to use the through ball button though but manual pass is much more enjoyable and when you do master it you get more freedom than pressing the automated through ball.

One way to counter this is to use close control when receiving the pass, when you hold RT as your player receives the ball he will take it into his path and control the ball more effectively. Try it and trust me on this it will improve your game if you keep using it in the right situation.
