I sometimes think a large part of the reason that games mags, myself included, are so forgiving of PES, is that in multiplayer - which we literally do play in 4-player every day - just keeps on giving. And giving. I play the game solo, too, but I feel like the Master League has been stuck in a trench, however fun, for years. And the core faults crop up time and again. The 'scripting', at times, is laughable, especially at the lower level in Master League. You can have 30 shots, and still lose 1-0 to a 'bent' unstoppable CPU goal in the 90th minute - but there's a perverse thrill in 'breaking' the script.
I played quite a lot of 360 Fifa last year, so I'm sceptical of their claims, but admire what they're trying to do. It's in everyone's interests if both games are excellent, but bitter experience teaches you that EA are masters of the big promise - I've been on countless press 'romancing' trips to their HQ where they've promised all sorts of things, and listened intently to our feedback, only for it to be completely ignored. But every year is a fresh chance, and you treat it as such.
I've seen a fair bit more of PES 2008 than they've shown on the net, and I'm now super excited in an unashamedly zestful fan's way. I might be wrong. But at least I've got an idea what they're up to.
I was also initially pleased, but underwhelmed, by the first batch of shots. From what Konami tell us, a lot of internal resource has been geared to the PS3 version, and it's seems only fair to be optimistic.
Time will tell.
