i have a tradition(sad as it sounds) where i dont play a new pro until it is released so i have not downloaded the demo. I thought pes 2008 was a poor game but this is the most excited by a pes game as i have ever been as i expect great things from the gameplay. The positives mentioned so far by everyone has been what i wanted to hear. The main thing i want is for the game to be a challenge and return to being a football simulation. would like to hear peoples opinions of whether the game is a challenge on top player.

This is one of my very few gripes with the demo.

Like I said before, I dunno if it's just the way I play, but I seem to have just been pumping teams. There isn't much of a challenge. PES09 could just suit my style though. Meh.

Judging by the demo of pro 09 it is a lot more of a challenge. Especially on top player. I dunno whether thats gonna get easier as I get used to it though.

Just to give you an idea of my standard - I have a 74% win rate online on Pro 08 having played over 400 games.

I've played the demo now non-stop and there are a few things i think Konami should improve on.

One being the thru ball in the air, you're 5 feet past defender, the ball bounces (it's 4 feet high after the bounce and droping), I hit shoot and i get a lame diving header when i was hoping he'd volley a hole in the net. Now I've gotten the volley to happen as well but the diving header should be added only if the keeper is way close!

Another is the same situation but the with the keeper. Air thru ball, striker and keeper are coming at each other. Keeper decides to punch the ball out when he could have just grabbed it. Now sometimes the punch fits because the striker is close but even when hes 5-7 feet away hell punch it.

They're not game-breakers but just annoying, especially the first one i mentioned. I tied a game because of it :p.

Downloaded, installed and played!! Liked it a lot. Graphics seem to be loads better than the 08 version. And the game level is harder too. Player Man United V Liverpool (I was United). 1st game drew 1-1, 2nd game 1-1 and 3rd game won 2-0. But I did notice as soon as they went a goal down, the whole team attacked a lot more than they did when we were level.

1 sort of down point (if you can call this a down point) is that the chip through ball seems to work 9/10 times, no matter where you are when played.

All good

My dear Alij, if you press the shoot button just as it is on the height of your chest the player will shoot. Since you press the shoot button while the ball is above the player the game assumes you want to head the ball. The game always reacted in relation to the ball.

I still make the same mistake sometimes :)

Back to our topic...

A few more days have passed and I have this to say. The more I read around the net and the more I play FIFA, the more I come to the following conclusion. This is only for the Console Versions since PES wins without a fight on the PC. :)

GRAPHICS: FIFA wins. Just look at the screens.

PRESENTATION/MENUS: FIFA wins. The screens again say it all. Not to mention FIFA’s soundtrack.

HANDLING: FIFA is clearly the winner this year. I enjoy it more than the current PES. But…

AI: PES wins because it has less balancing issues than FIFA. FIFA plays a better game but it’s minor AI glitches ruin the fun. In the long run, these things matter.

MANAGING MODE: PES’ Master League is by far the best here. I don't think they will ruin it this year. On the other hand, poor transfer system, leveling and unrealistic results ruin the FIFA experience. Liverpool first :w00t, with Chelsea at 12th place and Man U. at 16th??? :fplm: Lol.

TOURNAMENTS: PES’ licensing of the UEFA CL is the winner. I don’t understand how they could produce such a presentation for the rest of the game when the UEFA CL is as polished as it should be. UEFA itself couldn’t have done it better. FIFA on the other hand gets all the nice tournaments, but only on the PC version. Too bad.

BE A PRO/LEGEND: PES’ wins here in my book. Just the fact that you have to be good to even be in the starting lineup, not to mention staying in it, is a good enough reason for me to buy the game. FIFA on the other side ruins it by allowing you to be in it from the get go. Also the fact that you have to ‘’control’’ your teammates by encouraging tackles, shots and the like is stupid and missing the point.

ONLINE: Well for this I will have to wait. EA clearly needs to improve reliability. They obviously didn’t expect so many ppl online. Apart from that, it plays almost lag free. Few minor glitches but nothing game ruining. The Adidas Live Seasons are cool but for 5$ each... no thanks. As for PES they have to improve the overall experience from last year, at least on the PS3.

EDITOR: As always the PES community will shine ones again, so no need to tell you who is the best on this one.

So PES 2009 will be better than FIFA 09 in the long run. The whole package is more balanced than the one FIFA 09 offers. PES 2009 isn’t surely the best soccer game out there, nor is FIFA 09. So the question is what matters more to you.

If what you want is, life like controls, slow build up, shiny graphics and the best online mode on a footie game. Then buy FIFA 09.

If what you want is, familiar controls, a fast paced game, a very good managing mode, a more realistic implementation of the Be a Pro/Legend mode. Then buy PES 2009.

Either way, at least this year we get to have 4 great games to play around with.

PES 2009
FIFA 09
Football Manager 2009 (THIS is the best soccer game out there imho)
and
FIFA Manager 09

So everyone should relax and just enjoy the ride, things can only get better.

I think I didn't explain the height of the ball well. When this happened to me (with Toni) I did a great air thru ball, Tony reached the ball and I waited for the ball to be at chest to waist height (3-4 feet) and he did a diving header (as if it was a low cross, low diving header attempt). Now this could be the coding threshold between a diving header and volley shot. Knowing tony likes to head the ball maybe the game favors him doing that but it resulted in a retarded attempt.

In the future i will have to wait till the ball is even lower.

can't Wait for release date.

I started downloading the demo and it took almost 2 days to complete, has any one had this problem. I've eventually got it now, seems much better than 08. Can't wait to get my hands on the real deal.

Yeah the game has a tendency to do more headers than shots or volleys. :(. But what the hell, this PES after all.

Nope, not on the PC and certainly not on the PS3. :) It must have been the servers you were downloading it from.

I love the Demo... and will definitively buy the real deal.

By the way, I see lots of people praising FIFA for consoles and not for PC.... is there a big difference?

The more I played this game the more I get the same feeling here that this was what they intended for pes2008. As far as I'm concerned the only thing that has improved are the ref's decisions. I hate the fact that the defenders are faster than the strikers. Come on if the Michelin guy had the ball I could say ok, but I think Babel or Robben have quite a pace so when I play them I would expect them to make some meters. BUT the most slow def is keeping up easily. I play this on the pc and with pes2008 when I take a shot It actually feels like a shot...In this game it doesn't feel like you hammered the ball. I'm getting dissapointed by the day...

i've just been playing it and cant decide whether i like it.
overall it seems more sluggish than 08. when players recieve the ball they stop dead before continuing on with the ball allowing any opposition player within 10 yards to reach them.
players dont appear to have quick feet like they did on the last game (including ronaldo, messi etc.), when pressing a different direction to turn there appears to be a delay before they actually turn.
i like that 1 player cant beat a whole team anymore. no more eto'o, gerrard or ibrahimovic running the length of the pitch holding off 3 defenders and managing to avoid just about every challenge before scoring.

P.S. has anyone else noticed its quite easy to score direct from a corner? if you curl it on target the keeper often doesn't stop it

This has started bugging the hell out of me, and, imo, is the single worst thing about the demo (obnoxious refs 2nd, wonky/slow shooting 3rd). I hated it in WE9, and it seems even worse now.

Yes, last year, things were out of balance because you couldn't really stop Messi, Agbonlahor, etc, but neither could the AI defence (guys like a developed Micah Richards could usually catch up to them if not beaten too badly, at least). Now, you can't catch them if they manage to break away cleanly, which is mostly ok (honestly, you really shouldn't be able to with the defenders in the demo, like Cannavaro, Puyol, Hyypia), but if YOU break with Robben or anybody else way, way faster than the AI defence, you get caught and tackled with ease. It's like your turbo is worth a third of what it is to the computer's players.

Thats because the shooting is harder, no longer can you simply blast the ball from anywhere. You have to set up the correct body position. Try using R2 to slow the ball down, pass a player, and strike when parallel to the goal, goes like a rocket.

The defenders aren't faster than the strikers!

The difference is most of the time they'll drop back and only tackle when you try to go past them.
The striker now has the initiative!
They rarely will try to make a tackle if that risks their defensive line. They are just much more cohesive as a whole line, instead of separate defenders.
If you want to go past a defender, you'll have to do some kind of dribble, to lure him... they tackle like 1000x better.

With Robben or Messi, as soon as you find some space, you are able to outrun everyone... you just need to find that space.

Shooting has been completely re-hampered.
Now it's much more difficult to nail a good shot from outside the box... you can still do it, but the success percentage is lower... of course Gerrard or Xavi can still do it pretty consistently.

Other thing I noticed is that is much more important to aim the ball!
You really have to aim the shot, or else the keeper will make a save...

In 2008 there were times where you aimed right and the shot would go straight ahead or to the left... now the shot goes where you aim it.

Also a new factor has been added.
It's like when you are going parallel to the goal line while running.
A lot of the times when that happens, if you shoot, the player has a tendency to hit it with the outside of his boot... and most of the times the shot will go as corkscrew... wide and without strength.

Not in PES he don't, scored some of my best PES goals with him. 30 yards, both posts and in PES2008, and 40 yard R2 shot back on PES4;)

i really do hope that it is hard to dribble round defenders as the game this year needs to be much harder and i hope that it is. I want this game to frustrate the hell out of me and take me months to fully master, haven't played the demo yet waiting until release day.
