The Lord of the Rings: Conquest

So am I. Potential has gone right downhill. I mean the levels look big and stunning but there's no one in them - one Rohirrim holding the walls of Helms Deep against 3 Uruk Hais isn't exactly my idea of epic. I'm sure it will be entertaining but the downloadable content had better be bowel shatteringly good.

Just get rid of everything prior to The Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

PS3 Review on ign Here
(Just for info before someone says it's utter bollocks. Ta.)

Closing Comments
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is a straightforward affair with very little that will pleasantly surprise anyone who played Star Wars: Battlefront. Its combat and general mission structure is by-the-books and the lack of expandability and feeling of redundancy are felt instantly. Withstanding all of that, Conquest still somehow manages to earn merit on its expert use of The Lord of the Rings license. The environments feel like they're straight from the silver screen and Howard Shore's multiple orchestral pieces are great to fight alongside.
Diehard fans of both online, class-based games and The Lord of the Rings might want to invest the sixty bucks, but if redundant and unimaginative gameplay are things you despise, you'll want to steer clear.

IGN Ratings for The Lord of the Rings: Conquest (PS3)
Rating Description
8.5 Presentation
Just about everything feels like it's ripped straight out of the films. Hugo Weaving's dialogue could be stronger, as could the mid-action voice work.
6.0 Graphics
Crappy textures, character models and some framerate problems are partially saved by the great environmental designs of the movies.
8.0 Sound
Voice work ranges from good to very bad while Howard Shore's pieces push the action along wonderfully.
6.0 Gameplay
Redundant gameplay isn't helped by fairly unimaginative design. This game could have been much more had it expanded on the established formula to push the franchise in fun, new directions.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
It's fun for awhile, but after you hit the same button sequences for the thousandth time, things get more than a little stale. Any number of additions would have expanded this game's life.

Decent OVERALL- 7.0
(out of 10 / not an average)

Had a go of Helms Deep, the first campaign level, and really enjoyed it. There's tons of enemies on screen and it really feels like a good ruck, particularly when there's no mages about. The game seems a lot of fun, but its just a shame the instant action mode is so talentless - there's about 16 people on the Helms Deep map, which in itself is brilliantly designed.

Only problem now is that ever since I got my new PS3 for the first time I'm having trouble getting it connected to the internet, says it can't find an IP address.

So is it as good as you expected? Or does that not matter now you've got the full game?

Is it totally epic?

Has the onlione multiplayer changed much?

What are the graphics like? Smoother?

Can you upgrade stuff?

Witchfinder General
Well I wouldn't say it was good as I hoped, certainly not, but its not a bad game by any means, and its definitely entertaining.

Its pretty epic in campaign (I hope the later levels are more epic), but in the other modes I doubt it will be epic with not so many people on the screen.

Can't get online yet as I said, but I hear it hasn't.

Graphics look about the same.

By upgrade do you mean downloadable content? Or your character's points and weapons? No to either at the minute.

Arr man you cant even upgrade characters stuff??

Are the campaigns for good and evil different?

Or are they pretty much the same levels?

There are some unique levels to the evil campaign, like Weathertop, Rivendell, the Shire, and the top part of Minas Tirith.

But it wouldn't make sense to upgrade stuff, since you play as different characters all the time.

Sounds Ok if you're a fan then. Shame about the scaled down online mode as that was one of the big draws when it was first announced.

Have one question that I haven't seen answered yet... is there split screen action akin to SW battlefronts?

Witchfinder General
I haven't played split-screen, but if you're talking about vs., its 8 vs. 8 (on screen at once), so I'd say not if Battlefront had more (can't remember myself). But there is a co-op mode for the campaign which would probably be a real laugh. I'm one of those people who don't really find hack n' slash games boring or repetitive, I just hacking the bone as it were and getting overrun.

Was thinknig more co-op on one machine, rather than online...

I too like the repetetive hack & slash (I still have PS2 champions of Norrath which I have played through far too many times to be any longer considered sane), but it's more fun when there are upgrades and interesting things to find. Other than that, a la battlefront, it has to be an offline co-op as the missus like a bit o' hack n slash herself.

I just got owned by Grima Wormtongue, he sent me and another Rohirrim to our deaths in the pits of Isengard. This is a great laugh if you don't take it too seriously.

Hmm the offline co-op has re-kindled my faith lol

I was thinking about buying this anyway, when I first heard about it, but i'm not sure...

If I can get it cheap then i'll definately get it...

How much did you pay for it Barn? and where from?

OPSM gave it 5 out of 10. Not read the review yet...

Was it a shortfall, or a short, fall?

Clever. It was actually entirely unintentional. I laughed greatly, especially on account of the grunt he let out and the fact that his body hit a rock on the way down.

Been playing this all day on co-op with my brother and I must concede, regardless of all the problems, its still fucking brilliant. Most laughs I've had in ages, from jumping off the top of Minas Tirith to seeing who can throw a Gondorian the furthest with trolls down the chasms of Moria. That and riding a horse across the bridge at Osgiliath and being thrown into the river. The evil campaign is particularly good.

But perhaps the best moment was when my brother lobbed an Orc with an Ent at Isengard and hit me (Gandalf) standing in the doorway of Orthanc. Wonderful stuff. Plus it seems Amon Hen (and surely Boromir) will be the first DLC.
