Probably just had my favourite fight thus far.
Picture the scene, the fight is over, blood all over the canvas. Shogun's left eye is closed shut through swelling, with 2 huge cuts nearby. Chuck Liddell's left ribs bright red through bruising, accompanied also by 2 huge cuts to his right cheekbone.
After a very tight and close 1st Round, in which both competitors analysed their opponents. Niether went in swinging ferociously, instead picking intelligent combos. Shogun favouring right leg kicks to the left side of Chuck Liddell's abdomen. A close round to call, and even if pushed, a draw it would be.
Re-entering the battle, the 2nd Round explodes. Combinations of punches and kicks reign in from both Chuck and Shogun, both taking hits to the face and abdomen. Think Stephan Bonnar vs. Forrest Griffin from The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 Finale. The winner of these back and forth exchanges ? Chuck Liddell. After a brief pause, Shogun attempts his favoured right leg kick, to which Chuck spots and throws in a left Superman punch sending Shogun clean onto the canvas. Somehow, Rua manages to escape any form of TKO. Only moments later after both are standing, the blows reign in yet again, especially in the close encounter in which elbows are profusely thrown. This time it's Chuck who falls back after a right leg kick to the already bruised abdomen. Somehow, Chuck manages to survive a potential TKO. 2nd Round over, both men brutally beaten, bloody and fast running out of gas.
The 3rd Round begins where the 2nd left off. Blow after blow. Chuck's stamina is being hit the hardest though as he shuffles around the ocatgon. Shogun capitalises with brutal kicks again to his opponent's abdomen, Chuck falls down clutching his ribcage in sheer agony. Rua spots his opening, standing over a defenceless Chuck Liddell, repeatedly swinging down hit after hit. The Iceman's defence collapses after just 2 punches, still the referee's delayed stoppage has to be questioned after a total of 6 further punches reigned down on Chuck's skull. Fight over. Picture the scene, the fight is over, blood stains every corner of the octagon canvas. Both competitors' faces red through swelling, black through bruising, with each sporting numerous worrying cuts. Shogun's hand is raised in victory.
