It's not about winning trophies, it's how you play the game.

Indeed. But if you've gone... like 5 years without hearing that lovely "ping" sound, you must be playing the game wrong!

Sake, could be down another week? Not the worst news ever (providing my details and money aren't stolen), but I want some Portal 2 co-op!

What kind of fag would have that many trophies?

Mate, level 14 is nothing! Some folk have over 50.... even over 100 platinum trophies! I have quite a few, but I'm no whore

EDIT:

Another Sony quote:

There's a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers' data being compromised. We learned there was an intrusion April 19th and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly this afternoon.

Don't worry, I agree.

I don't want to have to cancel my debit card and get a new one, I'm lazy and it's too much fuss. But I will just as a precaution. Can't believe Sony didn't even encrypt the data.

Could the hackers have broken through the encryption?

I've blocked the debit card that was on my account just to be safe.

These stupid hackers, eh? They're obviously talented people who could easily put their skills to good use, earn good money, and actually make their parents proud.

Decided to order myself a new bank card, going to move my wages into savings as well when I get paid tomorrow just to be safe. Damn you Sony *shakes fist*

Dragonfly

Waiting....
Luckily, I've only got my credit card on PSN, so any wrongful purchases won't be debited directly from my bank account. I think I'm going to wait to see if anything happens before I make any changes. It's expiring soon anyway, so chances are I might get a new one before I (if I do) get screwed.

Shouldn't really use a debit card when purchasing online, you have very little protection. At least with a credit card you stand a good chance of getting your money back if the funds were removed without your knowledge/permission.

Anywhoo, are the details just held on the PS, or are they stored by Sony as well?

Edit: Damn you DF!

The credit data was encrypted. There is a lot of bullshit going around on the internet regarding the hacks. Nevertheless, I felt it was appropriate to cancel my current card and get issued a new one.

The BBC think its 77 million credit card details that are compromised. No it isn't you idiots. It's 77 million accounts. To have a card on file isn't a requirement of playing online games!

Anyhow, Sony said they pulled the PSN down as a precautionary measure once they knew the system was breached. Doesn't mean all details of those accounts are taken. Doesn't sound so good though, as it took them a week to issue a press release.

At least they're now going to rebuild the entire system from the ground up. So let us hope the security is up to scratch!

I hope we are all reimbursed. Maybe a free game, or a free £10 PSN voucher, or even free PSN plus for a year or something.

Mind you the downtime doesn't even effect me the slightest... I don't have any games to play on my PS3.

They need to hurry up and release some good games first.

It's a serious issue, but as long as we're vigilant and watch out for any dodgy activity, we should be fine.

I don't think everyone will be compensated. £10 x 77,000,000 is a lot of money to lose out on!

There are loads of good games, mate.

I think Sony should give these hackers a bloody job! They'd probably know what to do in order to make the system safe!

yeah the hackers should be hired. that would be the smart thing to do :p

sony is a dumb company though.

i'd be happy with free psn+ :p

there are plenty of games, but i'm honestly bored of black ops.

UNCHARTED 3 WHERE ARE THEE

i've sold a lot of my games. the only games i have are black ops, uncharted 2, killzone 2, gran turismo 5, mgs4.

i've already played them all and have no desire to play them again.

i need more 'good' games :p

BELIEVE
I can imagine the BBC said "up to 77 million credit cards could be compromised", which is sort of an acceptable thing to say as it's more accurate than plucking a number out of the air regarding how many were linked with credit card details online.

Sony won't send out money etc, they've only just started making profit on the PS3, and then this happens. It really has been a kick in the crotch for them. I'd be surprised though if everyone isn't given free PSN+ for a month or two though, as I'm sure it will just require a few clicks of buttons from Sony as opposed to gifting everyone plenty of money, ultimately losing all PS3 profits they're now making.

Bullshit eh?

Afraid not. I received an email (as will you all) from Sony tonight... take note of the bold bit.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at www.eu.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Teams

Sony's image has taken a real battering over this debacle. Sony being hacked is one thing, but delaying the truth so they could promote the new Sony Micro Tablet is idiocy of the highest order. Their priority was securing positive PR and commerical business for new hardware before their reputation took a kicking.

MS must be rubbing their hands with glee.

Reading through some of the rumours on the web one of the foremost beliefs is that the attack can be indirectly attributed back to the original ps3 hack by Geohotz that allowed custom firmware on their machines. Not that Geohotz was directly responsible for what we have now but the belief is this jailbreak allowed insertion of custom firmware that opened the door for hacker(s) into the developer portions of PSN using their PS3s - here the data was surprisingly found sitting freely for the taking. Of course could be rumours but you know there are a lot of jealous hackers out there trying to figure out how someone did it.

Some belief exists the user information was found when the original Anon denial of service attacks took place. I find it somewhat implicating that anonomyous announces they are going to release hell onto sony then suddenly back away only days later by quickly announcing they are not out to hurt consumers. Why the fast retreat? Why specifically say they are not going to hurt consumers? Seemed like they were trying to distance themselves too quickly on something they felt so strong about. Then they release that somewhat contradictary statment how they didn't do it but maybe some of them did. I imagine some of those boys will be rounded up in the investigation.

It is appalling that they tone everything down, then contradict it with the email sent today. They'll have some serious customer ass-kissing to do if they want to be trusted with personal info again.

Anon were more interested in hurting Sony's commerical image than annoying PSN users. Their mantra has always been that a PS3 owner should be entitled to do what he/she wants with the hardware. It would diminish any support for them if they were behind this.

I suspect whoever perpetrated the hack on PSN was paid to do it by a 3rd party.

quoted your wrong statement Sminky - meant to remark on the consumer piece.......(late edit)

But I am thinking that matra suddenly was announced only after the denial of service attacks and perhaps once they found the data loot lying in the open. Their belief that ps3 should do whatever they want it to do can be tied back the reason why sony even had a network hack. Firnware exploits were probably never thought of in sony's security because the ps3 was considered unbreakable and the scourge of hackers out there.

I hate damage control / spin PR - I agree it is that nature that creates mistrust with Sony more than the fact their network was intruded.

The Anon group has a point I agree with, imagine buying a PC or Laptop and then only being able to install software the manufacturer endorses/commercial agreements with? Or only being able to use one IE as your browser?

Sony knew that to compete in the market with MS they had to have an angle to rival the 1080p gaming experience on XBOX360. Hence the media piece of Hardware that the PS3 is. They wanted it both ways though, they wanted to package it as more than a console but then maintain control over the OS, and hence once more why they removed Linux.

But I also have to think that Sony just lost their ass with the music industry last decade by having no control on piracy and file sharing. They didn't want that to happen again.

Granted but Sony needs to be more innovative. Their fear was people would buy games and then burn them to the PS3 and palm off endless knocks offs of that game.

The future of gaming does not include buying discs, its internet to HDD sale and there is plenty of scope there for development. Piracy will always be rife because there will always be someone playing both ends of the field because of the money involved.
