For arguments sake, I've had similar problems with other types of drives as well.
For example, my 10 year old Pioneer Car CD Player refused to read CDs after about 4 years of constant use. A normal CD Lens Cleaner didn't do the trick. It only started working again after I opened the drive up, physically cleaned the lens and made some adjustments here and there.
So I'm sorry, but I can't agree with some of the comments posted here that Sony have intentionally manufactured a shoddy product. :no:
I know for a fact that CD & DVD Lenses can go on the blink after a few years of constant use. It doesn't matter what kind of product it is, it doesn't matter who manufactured it, it doesn't matter where you bought it from; CD & DVD Lenses can become faulty.
Companies can carry out as much quality control as they like but they're never going to identify major lens problems because they don't 'test' the drive as rigorously as we, the consumers do.
