Smackdown is really shite now.

NBA Live 08 is a little of a disappointment, but nothing new. I best believe that NBA Live 04 was the classic.

2K8 beats EA again. :(

prepare to be blown off your socks, at least graphic wise.

Part of it is the games themselves and the other part is people getting overly excited without properly considering what they are being told by the developers. People are all too quick jump to conclusions.

PES 2008 has been a major letdown and there's no excusing that. EA are an absolute disgrace and I hate them with a passion. FM 2008 has problems which it simply shouldn't be experiencing but that's what happens when you don't have any worthy competitors.

Unreal Tournament 3 will be the big test as far as I'm concerned but this seems to be going the right way as people have continually been calling for a return to the 'feel' of the earlier games rather than what UT2004 brought us.

The expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2 was ruined only by the inclusion of the spirit system and the incredible oversight of not sorting out the camera issues which were annoying throughout NWN2.

Alan Wake looks stunning graphically but we'll have to wait to see what the gameplay will be like. That's what I mean about jumping to conclusions. So what if it looks fantastic? They could screw the whole game up still.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was brilliant but personally I didn't like the fact that all interiors started to look far too similar and that though they're pushing the graphics, the world is getting smaller and less intricate. It also lost atmosphere as a result which is why so many people prefer Morrowind. A case of where the graphical enhancements left us with less of a game in other respects. There's a balance to be had but it appears graphics are most important, followed by gameplay. That's a very bad road to be going down. I'm not saying Bethesda intended that but I think they fell into the trap. That said, they sold enough copies so they would turn around and say they did their job perfectly.

Finally, StarCraft 2 being made by Blizzard who don't care about releasing a game on time as they'd rather get it right. Probably another twelve months of development but it is a game I know I am absolutely going to love and feel free to reference this post if I say I don't like it once it is out.

The bottom line is that people need to pay more attention to the game as a whole and not just look at images or promotional videos and start talking as if the game is going to be the best ever. Promotional videos and released images are designed to suck you in. Be happy with the amazing graphics in the pipeline but don't get tricked into thinking the game is going to be one of the best of its time.

I blame the internet and the hype. Back in the day it was all word of mouth or the odd games magazine I would buy and games felt that little bit more special when you actually got your hands on them to play.

Fuck I almost came when I first played Goldeneye, all my friends wouldn't stop talking about it and wow were they right.

I see what you mean. But as i got the ps3, i thought they would push it to the max. and believe me i know it does take time. But looking at games on the ps3 and the latest games on the ps2 they look close in many aspects. The more juice they pumped into the ps3 made designers able to put more things into the scene at the same time. But graphically: just a bit of effects here and there. Look at MGS snake eater for example, graphics were sweet on the ps2 and i don't believe it's much different than the graphics of resistance fall of man, just some polished graphics that's all.

Over time they will push the PS3 but it will have a five-year life-cycle so they need to make it last in order for both games companies and Sony to make as much money as they can before it is time for what I'm assuming will be the PS4.

By making incremental improvements to games, consumers will continue to spend money and the developers don't need to hit their own profit margins.

It is a similar situation to what we discussed about PCs in that other thread you made a couple of weeks ago.

The game that doesn't fit all of this of course is Crysis. Nobody can yet play it on the Very High setting because it is made for technology we don't have yet - but to make it that way the developers must have had access to the technology in some form.

I am a gamer who isn't bothered about graphics, a game more focussed on gameplay win's me over. I own a DS and have had more fun on that than I did my xbox and ps2. A prime example this year was PES 2008, too many fault's with the gameplay such as the amazingly crap keepers and controlling players who refuse to recieve the ball when passed to them. Instead Konami concentrate on getting league licences, 2 premiership teams and one single Bundesliga side, whats the point?
S.I deserve my rant as well, I haven't played FM 2008 since my third day of playing it. You wouldn't have a director creating a film and then saying knickers to it, Im only doing 70% of what's been asked of me.

Graphics is an important factor to decide which games to get. Even though a good balance between graphics and gameplay is definitely better than great graphics with bad gameplay. Bad graphics will ruin the game significantly.

Understandably, I enjoyed the original ISS games on the Playstation more than I do the current PES series.

At that time, graphics of isspro on the playstation were a leap from their SEGA counterparts. So the graphics were great at the time. What i'm indicating is: nowadays graphics should be jaw-dropping, ass smacking, smoking hot great !!!!

Thing is we have all grown up. Nothing we see is new anymore, meaning game devs need to take it up a notch. That said, we will only see jaw dropping, mind-blowing, awe-inspiring games when GTA IV comes out. lol.

I love those guys. They always deliver. They're going to make Tiberium Wars look like a cheap 2 Bit game.

While we're on the subject, i can't wait to see what the new Max Payne is going to look like. :w00t:

Also, Sierra are another a company that usually don't disappoint. I thought Half-Life 2 was an epic sequel. I'm getting Episode 2 today.
