Played with the Classic Brazil team last night for the first time, I have to say I'm well impressed apart from the fact that Garrincha missed an open net from 6 yards - think I need a bit more shooting practise.

1200 yeh might seem alot..but dont forget in those days there seldomly players were sent off for foals ..so who knows he could of scored up to 2000 goals. He must be a good player if your actual country places you as a "national treasure" in which none of the big european teams including real madrid were able to get a chance there hands on.

Brazillians ain't known for their defending so perhaps that might have had something to do with it too, when games end up 7-4 you know something is wrong. It's like Henrik Larsson playing for Celtic in the Scottish league - he scores up to 50 a season in a poor league where there is only one other quality side. I'm sure if Pele had played in Europe instead of Brazil and the US he wouldn't have scored half that amount of goals, certainly not in Italy anyway where the art of fouling has been taken to new heights.

Its all a matter of opinion but in pure footballing terms I am in no doubt that Maradona would wipe the floor with Pele when both were in their prime. I don't think there would be any argument if Diego hadn't of snorted his career away or cheated the English out of WC'86. 2 league titles for Napoli who hadn't been heard of before or since swings it for me despite the Mafia rumors that will always plague him. I see Pele as the best player in the old era but in true modern-day football there can be only one.

Pele would absolutely kick that drug-taking fat boy(maradona) arse any day when they were in their prime. I don't care what anyone else thinks but Pele would completely spank Maradona's heiny. But there is no dubt of who is the best keeper of all time it is of coarse the one and only Peter Schmeichel he is a ultimate legend.

yeah thats what I'm saying, you don't get those sorts of scores in football these days. The formations in those days were 5 forwards and 2 defenders, no one even knew what defending was let alone marking. You have to take everything into context and after the world cup in 1970 things completely changed which is probably why Brazil didn't win the cup again until 1994 despite having some great teams.

yeh if you put things into context..yes maybe he might not of scored as many goals in europe...but still considering fouls in those days..you obviously gotta add the goals that might of been..so in the end i think he would of scored 1000 goals no matter what league around the world. in every world cup, exibition matches around the world with santos...no one could touch pele..they would score with huge margins....so it doesnt matta what league he played in..he would of been unstopable. Anways it's like comoaring Don Bradman in cricket..he had an average of (99.6)runs a game..and todays best would be something like tendulkar..(nearly 60)...even though todays game has changed..everyone still knows bradman was the king of the game..no matter what era.the same with football pele was light years above anyone including maradona! to be named athlete of the century comes only once a 100 years..beating the like of mohamad ali,babe ruth, michael jordan..everyone else you name it..and win..means ppl around the world think you were the best at your sport you did above anyone else!

Oh yeh..as much as i admire Ronaldo(my favourite european player)..he was wrong for saying those comments...he has been ridiculed in brazil from them...if you read articles from brazil...majority of ppl have relied "he is mainly jealous of pele achievements, knowing pele is 3 times the player he is!pele was the complete player..he was a stricker and score goals, but he was also a playmaker!

You can't add the goals that might have been, if that were the case you may as well just count all the shots he missed as 'might have been' too. It's just plain daft. You shouldn't take those goal figures at face value either as there has never been any evidence to suggest that he scored that amount. I mean the one thing we do know is that if you break those figures down, he has included all his goals for Santos Juniors in the count and probably all his goals for some other Mickey Mouse outfits too. It's a story thats been rumbling on for years and years and it just adds to the myth I suppose. I remember a few years ago Romario saying something similar to Ronaldo and last year 'Big Phil' Scolari had a dig as well so the sun doesn't shine out of his arse as much as he would like you to think it does.

how did this become a pele v maradona debate anyway? there is no right or wrong answer and in the end when it comes to the question of who is best between the pair everyone agrees to disagree. Such is the beauty of football. The fat argie is still the best though.

yeh pele has done an erection commercial..but that is only part of the multi milliion endorsments he earns..he charges $50,000 an interview...and earns anually around 25 million US....yeh there is much debate who is the best ever,pele,pukas,di stephano,beckenbaur,best, maradona..list goes on...but in the record books it's pele..i dont think anyone on the list has a record such as pele(goals,assists,world cups,clubs cup) ..based on achievement and skill ..i rate beckenbaur next..only cause he was an attacking defender, plus he won the WC..as a player and coach.(a few yrs ago they took an official world wide poll..who was the best ever...Pele was 1st,beckenbaur was 2nd, i think is was maradonna was 3rd or 4th)Players such as romario,ronnie..critisize only cause they are jealous of Pele achievment..ppl will argue how many goals pele really scored..no one will trully know...in 20 years time the ppl will argue the same thing with ronnie,romario how many goals they really scored,...one thing i do know for sure..he scored more then and other brazilian player by a mile!!! in brazil..every young kid wants to be the next pele/garrincha....not ronnie,romario..because he is the king and god/legend of brazil! Pele is the most consistent player..from his 1st WC "58" at 17 he dominated..to his last "70"maradona had only one good WC were he shined..the others..his mentality took over him!he let his country down!same way as beckham done the same at the "98" WC


ps: i was just making an estimation of how many goals pele might of scored in europe based on exibition matches with santos against european teams.. cause he never played full time in europe!well the pretty much official number is around 1200 for santos....any other player you can debate with there numbers also..so for instance romario scored 1000 goals..ppls are gonna say he included his jnr goals also!
