Favourites Reaffrim Their Title as Tournament Favourites

With the Italians almost certaint to go through their pool in top spot, it appears that this game is what we might find out later to be a Quarter Final preview as the winner of Italys pool will play what looks like to be either the Dutch or the Germans. So with all this playing in the back of the minds of the coaches and players a like, this game had extra meaning.

The Dutch have probably the most exciting squad, with some of the youth that the world has seen soming through their ranks, and tonite Nifty decided that it was time for the established players to step aside, and this game turned into more of a selection trial for the Dutch with a few positions still availible in their best XI. Nifty gave their youth a chance to shine. And shine they did, Van der Vaart had a solid game and created a few chances, but they were unable to finish. Although Robben played in the forward line and was unable to convert the chances that their youthful side created, he still recieved the man of the match award.

Italys Manager worldrecord50leagues, on the other hand went for the tried and tested and picked his strongest XI, which showed. It was a clinical performance that still showed area's that they need to improve which is a good sign for worldrecord50leagues, he can now go back to training and work on the areas of concern. The Australian born Veiri was in typically good form, picking up probbaly the easiest goal of his international career, with a simple tap in after a Van der Sar spill. This was the only goal in the match. I hope to get an interview with worldrecord50leagues later on so we can see exactly how he is preparing and dealing with the pressure of being one of the tournament favourites. Till next time...

I'm still around, but I have lost my daytime internet for now, so I can't get on until after midnight.

And besides, there isn't much to do, other than keep an eye on goal scorers and match results, so I can revise the odds later on.

But you guys are all doing quite decent jobs at summarising the matches, and particularly well when it comes to inter-manager relationships.

Keep it up!

Inside the Italian's

Last night I sat down and had a beer with the Italian Manager, worldrecord50leagues. I tried to find out exactly how he is planning on tackling the tournament and what his predictions are. The transcript is below:
-=10st]=-: How does you formation change between the minnows and the better teams?

WR50L: Not at all. I don't see any reason, if I can beat the best teams with one formation then why shouldn't I be able to beat the minnows with it.

-=[10st]=-: What kind of formation are you looking to implement?

WR50L: A 4-4-2 diamond seems to be working. I have wingbacks getting into attack to join Zambrotta and Camoranesi on the flanks. Vieri and Di Vaio are the target men, and of course if we want to switch things up, we can change to a central attack with Totti leading it.

-=[10st]=-: Will it be offense orientated?

WR50L: Not at all, we are balanced, we have the best defenders in the world, no doubt, and the best attackers in the world too! We need to use both these elements to win a tournament.

-=[10st]=-: How will it change in the later stages of the tournament?

WR50L: Once again, not at all.

-=[10st]=-: Who are your biggest threats?

WR50L: I at the moment, don't feel threatened by anyone, we've beaten France and Netherlands, and they are to me the best teams in the tournament, after Italy of course.

-=[10st]=-: Who do u think is the biggest threat in your pool?

WR50L: Denmark, they have great strikers in Sand and Tomasson and great midfielders. I am also worried about Sweden slightly, well less worry about the team, more about Larsson, that'll be a tough day for the defence.

-=[10st]=-: Who will be your key player throughout the tournament?

WR50L: Allessandro Nesta without a doubt, he was the reason we beat France, Thierry Henry didn't get breathing space all day and Arjen Robben couldn't do anything against him either.

-=[10st]=-: Who is your pick to get player of the tournament?

WR50L: Assuming we get all the way to the final, I would expect Christian Vieri to get player of the tournament, he's on top form for us at the moment and I can expect at least 6 goals from him. I also think that Gino Gatusso, Francesco Totti and Allessandro Nesta are up for it too.

There you have it a bit of an insight into the way the italians are planning on attempting to take the title from the French. I believe that he has picked the biggest threat to the Italians, and that is complacency. Because on their day there is no team in world football that can beat the flambouyent Italians. I plan to sit down and have a beer with some of the other coaches before Euro 2004 gets under way. Till next time.
