Italy manager talks to press

Q. What did you think of your performance today?
"My players underachieved today."

Q. What was wrong with your attack?
"My attack was at times pathetic, they weren't willing to take responsibility, they all wanted to pass the ball away."

Q. What about your defence?
"My defenders did not believe in each other. Unity in a defence is key and they just didn't have it."

Q. What will you be doing, if you get through, to improve on this performance?
"Expect a change in formation and starting line up."

My tactics for the Netherlands' group-deciding clash with the Latvians are in your e-mail inbox, t1000.

Never-lands!

And so far, the Italians, the Portuguese, and the English have all gone. Surely this paves the way for the Dutch to go on to once more become European champions?

"Well, this is a tournament of the highest calibre, and there are no easy games. Just look at Bulgaria - they have beaten many people's favourites, the Italians. I'm sure Latvia will be attempting to beat us, we must simply keep performing the way we have been.

"Patrick will once again start. This is not because of van Hooijdonk's ridiculously large teeth, as many of the greatest players have big teeth - look at Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho. It's simply that Kluivert played very well last match, and has earned his place like the rest of the team."

The Dutch have been written off by many well-respected pundits throughout the tournament, as problems inside the Dutch camp have caused a lack of effort and teamwork on the pitch. But, now, with many of the fellow big-guns falling, it may just be the Netherlands' year for glory.

Denmark 1 - Sand 48
Sweden 1 - Ibrahimovic 87

Match Report

It was a tense match as the two Scandinavians met in their final group match. Denmark already elimiated due to the surprise Bulgarian win against the Italians, meant that Denmark could not go through with a victory, however Sweden had a chance of topping the group, but the draw meant they too are knocked out. The better of the play was by the Danes, who had great chances from Sand, Tomasson and pacy wingers Gronjaer and Rommedahl. They took the lead with a Sand header, which although wouldn't count for much, would be some kind of consolation of getting a win against their neighbours. The Swedes rarely threatened in this match and were looking a defeat, but Ibrahimovic grabbed an equliliser on the 87th minute. A result that didn't suit either team, but a good performance from the Danes, who were unlucky not to win. So there is to be no Scandinavian reprentatives in the knock out phase, and the Italians due to this result go through they would consider themselves lucky, but are still in the competition. Thats it from Bessa, the match ended, Denmark 1 Sweden 1.

-------------------------------------

Bulgaria and Italy go through to the Quater Finals, Denmark and Sweden are eliminated from the tournament.

Netherlands 5 Makaay 18 61 Kluivert 42 88 Van Nistlerooy 81
Latvia 0

Match Report

The final matches of Group D took place today, and the points situation extremely tight. The Latvians, needing a win to stand a chance of going through went for broke but the plan hugely backfired as the Dutch tore them apart with ease. The Latvian manager opted to play 3 upfront, which was a huge risk, but goals were top of the agenda for Latvia, and the game had many of those, but sadly went the other way, as The Netherlands managed to hook their team performance up to score 5 in a match that turned out to be totally one sided.

Two goals from Makaay and Kluivert and another from Van Nistlerooy meant the Dutch go through as possibly group winners, as the Germans would need to score alot of goals to get top spot, but should now be favourites to get the second spot. The Latvians go home, after a promising start, and the final places are to be decided today, for which we will then bring you the full quater final draw. Stay tuned.

Germany 3 - Klose 3 16 Ballack 8 (Lahm booked)
Czech Republic 0

It took only 16 short minutes of the first half for Germany to book their place in the Quater finals as they won the game before the Czechs even managed a shot on goal. The Czechs had the majority of poesession but the Germans were happy to sit back and counter, looking for the openings. The Czech Republic gave a start to new boy Heinze, who played in a 3 man attack with Koller and Baros, they seemed to be in the end inafective. The first goal came from a corner with Klose heading in typical fashion making it 1-0 after just 3 minutes. The second goal followed a few minutes after with a through ball that Ballack got on the end of and slotted home. Goal number 3 came onn the 16th minute, where mistake by Koller, where he sliced his clearence which rebounded off another Czech defender rolled square to Klose who hit a great half volley in to the corner of the net, 3-0, game over. A couple of late chances in the second half for the Czechs but they failed to convert. They now go home with Latvia and The Netherlands along with Germany advance to the quater finals where they face Italy and Bulgaria respectively..

Quater finals

Greece (LFC 4EVA) V France (Zyg)
Croatia (ASHMUFC) V Spain (South Dorset Blue)
Bulgaria (JTHK2004) V Germany (Phatmann2003)
Netherlands (Nifty) V Italy (WR50l)

Ok, the first game to be played is Greece V France. A slight variation in your tactics now. As in this stage we have extra time and pens. So you now have to specify your top 5 penalty takers, and any others who you way want to take kicks if the shootout goes into sudden death. Be tactical, and bare in mindif games go to extra time, you may want to change things as you may need fresh legs in extra time, so have a substituion policy as to who to take off/bring on. This is knock out now guys, purely one off games, so have a think about your opposition and strategy, good luck.

Yes well we tried to bolster the attack because we figured we needed to win and score goals also. In the end it did not work. Congrats to all that made the quarters and I hope that another team will be willing to take me on as manager if there are more of these tourneys in the future :)

A word from the Czech manager there, disappointed but optimistic he can bounce back in a future tournament.

Yes I figured I was quite all tournament. It was time to say something. Good luck to all in the quarters and hope to see you again in a future tournament.
