If your save game is corrupted, you're fucked. Simple as. There's no restoration utility around.

If it's an awfully long game you're playing, the best way to do it is save under a different file-name every season or so. This keeps the file "fresh" so-to-speak. I've never had a game corrupt, ever.

fuck! This means I've lost my ManUtd game. Good thing that I made another save, but this time I'm managing Coventry.

I don't know what made it corrupted. I've already closed the game properly.

Unfortunately, the corruption isn't linked to the actual saving of the game itself - it can be any number of processes that your computer runs, and this is essentially the eternal fallability that computers will always have. They deal with such delicate and endless strands of code, that a single misaligned attribute can cause an error, and that error then causes further errors, which ultimately lead to the engine that is opening the file (in this case the engine being FM.exe, and the file being your save game) to be unable to recognise and validate said file.

As programs these days have no automated back-up process (at least not one to deal with such corruptions of code), these errors are (albeit very occasionally) inevitable. I'll tell you what, if I had the know-how and resources (i.e. time) to work on something like this, a global self-recovery validation fix of sorts, I'd be a millionaire within a day of the patent.

FMFormation.net - That's got the best update around. Also has a fair few graphic downloads.

Probably a stupid question but how long does it take for non-EU players to gain the necessary citizenship stuff to no longer count as foreign? I'm playing as a Spanish club and have a few too many 'Fgn' players, most of whom I only bought at the beginning of the first season - which I haven't finished yet - and had to loan out.
