functional difference between d-pad and joystick

I just bought my pes2011 and played one game. This old question pops into my mind again: what is the real difference between the d-pad and the joystick?

I started playing PES in 2001. At that time, you had to use the D-pad, because there were things you could not do without it. For example, to do a low free kick shot, press down on D-pad, and press the shoot button. This could not be done with the joystick. Another example, to sprint, press R1 and double press the D-pad towards the running direction. Again, you couldn't do this with the joystick.

Now comes my question, to folks who are experts in the new pes2011: did Konami remove these functional differences between the D-pad and joystick now? Can I sprint with the joystick? How can I do a low freekick shot? I ask because I feel that Konami has deliberately designed the new version to be played using the joystick. Passing, for example, is way more fluent and precise with the joystick.

Up until 2011 I always used the D-pad.

Now, I've accepted the analog stick, although for free kicks and penalties I still use the D-pad and it works perfect just like it always has (I've scored a dozen free kick goals online pressing down on the D-pad).

As for double tapping the direction, I believe they already changed this last year. You had to double tap the sprint button if I remember correctly. Must say I haven't tried double tapping on this version yet as I do the diagonal RT (R2) sprint to maximize my speed.

I was just like alx-9. I played a match using the D-Pad only and I got blisters on my thumb lol. So, D-Pad only for free kicks and penalties.

As far as double/triple-tapping, this is what the manual says:

Extended Time Between Ball Touches: While holding the R1 button to spring with the ball at your player's feet, rapidly push the left stick two or three times between touches to knock the ball further ahead. You can also achieve the same effect by repeatedly tapping the R1 button

Greater Distance Between Ball Touches:
While running with the ball with the R1 button depressed, hold the R2 button and push the left stick 45 degrees to either side of the current direction of movement.

i use the analog for everything but freekicks and penalty kicks...just can't seem to place accurate passes with the d-pad this year.
