They aren't excellent when the standard of graphics is below that of a PC which isn't state-of-the-art. Technology has moved fast in 2008, leaving consoles trailing. My graphics card isn't quite top-end and is superior to both the 360 and PS3.
Regarding cost, anything mass produced will be cheaper but then look at the exorbitant price of games on consoles or the fact playing on Live for the 360 costs money. You need to factor in all costs and PC games tend to be half the price of console games.
Top quality graphics cards are now sub £100, a good dual core processor which can overclock to nearly 4Ghz along with a supported motherboard, 4GB DDR2 RAM and a third-party cooler can be had in total for around £150 if not less (E2180 ~£45, 4GB PC6400 ~£30, cooler ~£25, motherboard ~£45) and a 1TB drive is £60 so factor that down to a smaller drive at even £50 and that's only £300 so far with onboard sound being used and the computer fully functioning bar an OS. Not quite the answer you or many others would have been expecting.

£300 for all that stuff, and that's without buying the PC, I assume most people buy a good "gaming" mouse and keyboard too. An Xbox 360 console for example costs about £120 now, then you'll need a wireless network adaptor which usually costs about £55, and an Xbox Live Gold subscription which is £35 if you know where to look. So that's a little over £200, for the console and to play online. A lot less than the stuff you posted above, plus the costs of buying the actual PC etc.
The gap in prices between PC games and console games aren't that big anymore, especially lately, when new Xbox 360 games are available for around £20-£30 in some shops. I'm no expert but it seems quite a few top games come out later on the PC than on consoles too.
EDIT: Just remembered, don't PC gamers have to keep upgrading their specs and graphics cards or whatever over the years to keep up with the advances in games ? That will surely cost an arm and a leg too, or maybe just a foot.

You're really not understanding that the £300, plus a case and power supply IS the PC. A case can be dirt cheap but the PSU won't necessarily be. A decent mouse and keyboard are as little as £15 combined. Lets say close to £400 - that's still not as much as it once was. Only people with extreme needs should go higher and that's by choice, not necessity.
Top games only come out later on PCs if they're being improved. Look at GTA IV and Mass Effect for example, we've got superior graphics and more gameplay options.
We don't have to keep upgrading since dual core. Only a handful of games make a distinction between dual core and quad core meaning dual core remains the option unless you are doing LOTS of encoding and graphical modelling work or music production. RAM prices have dropped faster than the pound this year as have the price of graphics cards and certain peripherals. Simply speaking, technology is moving fast but games requirements aren't meaning the hardware for games is becoming cheaper and cheaper.
In the above price a PC is also used for work and internet browsing etc. though we're not including any of that nor the graphical modelling and music production in the comparison we're conducting in this thread.
New PC games are typically priced from £17.99 to £24.99 with the odd title peaking at £29.99 on release and dropping to £24.99 up to a month later. We're also able to, should we choose, acquire such games for free with ease.

Now that you've simplified it, the pricing etc doesn't seem that bad, although when you consider a console is half the price, and despite what you think, not shit then it's easy to see why they're so popular. Combined with the fact it's far less complicated, you buy a console, a game, then play. All my friends have an Xbox 360 making it a laugh to play/talk with them, I guess we're casual gamers who play purely for fun. PC gamers seem to be a lot more hardcore, some of my friends join clans etc and partake in tournaments, all sounds way too drastic and geeky for me. :mellow:

"Shitty" isn't a great term for me to have used, you would have to read through my words a little bit to be fair. They're just not as perfect and fantastic as people make out, that's all. You get people thinking PCs cost the Earth - and yes, they once did - and crucially, thinking PCs are inferior in hardware when they're most certainly not. Its just that which annoys me a lot as its turned into a stereotypical view.
I've never been part of clans or been a part of tournaments etc. the closest I've come being my participation in World of Warcraft for over a year but even then I was never hooked on it, could never play for more than 3-4 hours in one sitting and left because I wanted to play other games. PC is the best platform for hardcore gamers in that respect though, you're right about that.

I've always thought that PC's were able to produce the best graphics etc for games, but I just thought they cost about £1000 to put together along with having to spend money to keep them up to date. As you say though, the prices have come down a bit, but because I don't care for PC gaming, I wouldn't really know.
I used to play a little bit of COD2 on my bro's old gaming PC, and enjoyed it quite a bit, minus the difficulty I found with having to press keys instead of controller buttons. I also tried World of Warcraft around a year ago, and honestly became bored of it after maybe 1 hour. I can imagine it becoming more enthralling the further you delve into the game, but as for the start, it almost put me in a coma and I've just laughed at the game ever since. I'm enjoying FallOut 3 though so far, if that's classed as an RPG ? Only played it for probably 4 hours or so since Christmas but it's definetely got something special about it, not so keen on the 3rd person view as your character looks a bit shit graphically, in terms of body proportions etc but the 1st person view makes the game pretty damn good.
PS: First debate I've had on this site in a year I think. :chanlaugh:
I've always loved using a keyboard - I used to play Sensible Soccer and SWOS on a keyboard and could control as well as people on controllers if not better. Just a preference after a while I guess. Fallout 3 is indeed classed as an RPG and is excellent though I've not played it for a while.
You planning to be around a bit more frequently or is this just for Christmas/New Year?

I only played Sensible Soccer on a few occasions, my friend had that original 1-man football team game, can't remember it's proper name though, Liberto Grande ? :mellow: Anyway, was a quality game, could play it for hours on end. I actually recently bought a controller adaptor, so if I ever fancied a little game of something on the PC I can just hook up my Xbox 360 controller. As you say mind, keyboard/controller is all purely down to preference.
I do actually plan to be around more frequently, I've only really started becoming more and more active again over the last month because before that, I never had internet at my Uni accommodation. :mellow: I'm back home now, but one of my Christmas presents was mobile broadband from my dad so I'll definetely be putting that to use. I've got to revise for my upcoming exams in January so no doubt I'll constantly be on the laptop switching between revision, this site and msn. :happy:
I had to buy a controller adapter for my PC once Pro Evo came as a standard keyboard only allows 3 or 4 key inputs at one time making tricks impossible. I've used controllers for a lot of games since but never SWOS - or GTA, strangely.
Good to know you'll be around more, nice to have a quality member back.

I remember buying PES4 for my old PC, and had difficulty getting it to work. Can't remember the exact problem, I think it worked perfectly fine, but I just couldn't get the patches to work so I just couldn't be arsed messing about with it. I prefer the Xbox 360 controllers over the Playstation ones, but PES will forever be a Playstation game to me.
