I'm very impressed with the demo.
Konami have made some subtle improvements, which when combined, improve teh game dramatically. Of course it's not perfect, but in comparison to PES12, this is now enjoyable and a fresh alternative to what was becoming a complete dominance by Fifa.

Firstly, the gameplay looks and feels organic. There are intelligent runs, intelligent AI cover in defense and an overall fluidity to the game, which makes for an exciting experience.

Secondly, the presentation is stunning. The lighting in the stadiums, the shadows, some new animations and the overall speed is great.

On the negative side, the game still suffers from some AI issues, such as players not recognising that the ball is next to them. Also, there are examples of some questionable physics, where a player would run much quicker than another player with similar speed ratings - as if one player recognises teh urgency and the other does not. There is still an annoying animation when a player is in possession of the ball and carries it forward (it looks as if the ball is on a string). The sliding tackles look a tad unrealistic (too quick and robotic). The tricks are too hard to pull off (and suffer from a delay) and turns are still a bit robotic.

Konami keeps persevering with the long and tiresome replays for every little incident such as fouls etc, but I hope they will include an option to skip these.

However these are all minor glitches in what looks and feels a very promising product for this year. The fact that there are still 2 months to launch give even more hope that the game will be more polished.

I never thought I would say this, but well done Konami. Keep the good work and keep listening to the community. You are on the right path.

*I had a good 2 player session with Billy Minof last night and despite some really good features and improvements the shooting/power bar is just a million miles off feeling right. It seems like a quick tap on the button is the best option for a power shot that actually stays down and doesn't balloon over the bar. Don't hate me for this but Fifa kills it dead in the water in this department and gives the feeling of great satisfaction when you measure the shots right and they nestle into the top corner or finesse them around the keeper. Aside from that issue the game has made some great strides on returning to it's former glory. CPU AI is class compared to Fifa which could well be the dumbest CPUs ever to grace a football game. Will be interested in playing demo 2 to see if that tap the button to blast the ball shit is tweaked, if it isn't I'll not be buying the game. Mad thing about it is that Fifa used to have that type of shooting back in the day and PES used to use the power bar to better effect.*

SO BASICALLY WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SAY IS i played the PES 13 demo and it is very good. but because my head is so far up EA and FIFAS backside im gonna make a comment looking for the stupidest reason not to like it, oh and i know i will choose something that i know for a fact will not be any different in demo 2.
SO BASICALLY WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SAY IS THIS
im an numbskull that noes nothing other dan PES. fifa sux shit becuz i am a fanboy of pes and it is perfect game. fifa isn't becuz it is shit and i cant play it meaning its shit.

I skipped PES 11 and 12 and instead played FIFA 11 and 12. PES has fallen off in recent years, but I have been very impressed with the PES 13 demo. The AI is very good and the manual settings add another layer of strategy to the game. The animations are also a lot smoother. I think it is a bit ridiculous and premature, however, to be calling PES the better game. FIFA 13 also has promise and the new features look good. I am looking forward to the second PES demo and the FIFA demo.

I had the same problem with the Pes 12 demo, but I'm not having trouble with shooting with the pes 13 demo.

I had the same problem with the Pes 12 demo, but I'm not having trouble with shooting with the pes 13 demo.

Nah dude I know what I'm on about here, makes no sense that a simple tap of the button should result in such an arrow like shot from the Gods. The whole thing about being able to get shots that strong should be about 3/4 power on the bar, not a quick tap. Press, hold ,release and let fly.

And getting back to that other plonker "Eagles", I was playing PES before you were even old enough to know what a shitty nappy was. So don't come in here flapping your gums just because Mammy got you it for Xmas and it's your new favourite football game.

Everybody with half a self thinking brain knows PES has being off form sense it moved to the PS3 and to be totally honest won't return to it's true greatness until the PS4 (Maybe)

I stopped paying PES after 2008 and at that was using a modded PES6 to tie me over, years went by and eventually I just stopped playing football games period, until this year when I moved to the dark side and started playing FIfa 12 clubs where I even edit the buttons to play like PES. Despite the CPUs being the dumbest AI players ever to grace a football pitch there's a special quality and utopia you get when you score, something Fifa never had and something PES left slip the net.

PES 2014 will be the true year when PES regains its crown, not now or when the PS4 arrives. The reason I'm not saying now because at times the limited animations restricts the ways you can play the game but thats minimal but it makes a difference when reviewing a game. PES 2013 is a good game judging from the demo, but its not sophistacated enough in a way because a game like this should've been released a few years ago, not now. Its a bit piss-taking to see how we had to wait from PES 2008 to get a game that actually challenges FIFA as if this game was released earlier, imagine the game we would have had for 2013. But 2014 will be the year when KONAMI actually catches up by putting the Fox Engine in place which will impact the game in several ways.

fifa isnt as good as people say (in terms of gameplay). It's online game modes are what keeps people going.

The only problem I have with the demo is the games are too short. 10 minute games would have been nice.

A place to practice skills and shooting like fifa's arena would be nice. After practicing some of the skills, they are actually very intuitive and with top players, they give them a great deal of extra space

That's an interesting point, I mean, the "Fox Engine" in year 2013, would mean that the PS4 is still a good three years away, at the very least.

The reason why I believe that PES will not "regain the proverbial crown" until the PS4 comes out, is because the next engine to be used by footy sims will be a great revolution, and I don't think that neither Konami nor EA will invest the great effort that a new engine requires, knowing that the PS4 is (according to rumors) just two years away, maybe less.

Or perhaps Konami wants to use the Fox Engine on the PS4, but have decided to set the foundations on the PS3, which I think would be a bad choice, because if that was the case, I think that EA will come out with something superior by the time the PS4 comes out.

Konami should not make the same mistake twice, they need to start the PS4 era with an engine that cannot be surpassed by anything that EA offers, or otherwise, the PS4 might be a repeat of what we've seen in the past five years.

My guess is that KONAMI will set the foundations on the PS3 as their initial plan was to use it on the PS4. However, they would use parts of the fox engine on to the PS3 so next year would mean a game with a new engine but that new engine would be restricted to what it can do on the PS3. I can see what you're saying about EA coming up with something better, but because the engine won't be used to its potential on the PS3, there could still be a big jump with Konami from PS3 to PS4.

Also, I think next year could be the year for Konami, not the PS4 era because many FIFA fans have converted to PES after this demo so when they play the demo this time next year, there will be a lot more which will close the PES and FIFA sales down as in 2011 when PES 2012 and FIFA 12 were released, FIFA only outsold PES 2.6:1. Also, the animation side to PES will be groundbreaking.

Is someone having a bad day?

To be fair to Dundon's he makes some very good and inarguable points. Since the switch to next Gen PES has been garbage. A mish mash of confused understanding on how to produce a game worthy of following PES6. PES2013, is the most simplistic PES since PES6 and whilst some people don't like that, its easily the most enjoyable.

Its barely worth spending time picking holes in PES2013 because compared to PES2012 its chalk and cheese. With the overwhelming consensus being in agreement, just enjoy PES2013 for what it is. Nothing wrong with debating what you don't like or even coming up with suggestions.

Dundon makes a great point about the power button and the way it fills up during the shots in pes 13. Yes. That's an issue and I totally agree on that. However, to say that he won't get pes just because of it is just well, it's a whole different ball game and that changes the argument entirely. Why? Because even though Fifa's power button when shooting fills up the way it should, the general shooting is really not like real life. Rarely any surprises, you know when you're gonna score and when you are not, the long range game is not about power shooting, but about R2 finesse (or rarely any power shots that go where you want), etc,...

So this might seem like personal preference, but I much prefer a shooting system that makes you smile everytime you score rather than a shooting system where you have more control over "power" when at the end of the day, the shooting in it's own ain't that good.

Surprised to see you all so negative about it tbh. I for one think the gameplay is far better than that of FIFA 12, and much much better than PES 2012.

What gives?
