played it on sunday and ever since. initial reactions were good but playing WE9 takes abit of the enjoiment out of it. loved the new licensed celtic and inter tops but after a few times i played it and after a while a was getting seriously peed off with it, every time you even touch a player he goes to the deck and the referee always blows the whistle, is fooball suddenly a non cantact sport

finaly played pes5 today so there are some differences between pes5 and we9 firstley the main menue its the same setup but with no nippon and terry and henry in the background. The intro is better I onley played the first half of a match but the things i picked up on are better in game graphics slightly not a major difference to we9 and slightley sharper gameplay. pes5 is faster and a bit more smoother there are different ad boards, also i played on a snow pitch in pes5 there is snow on the pitch and it also falls from the sky looks great.overall the game is good i mean really good for every one who does not have we9 and are getting pes5 you are going to be blown away.

I have played both WE9 and PES5 now...but a quick note first: I won't comment about the menus etc. because I know everyones talked about them and seen them I just want to tell you my experience of the game.

I'l start with WE9:
At first I thought Yuk! The players felt more like they should be in the NHL rather than the Premiership. I couldn't perform my old favourite dribbling moves either - I was getting tackled using Ronaldinho by average defenders. The pace was much slower than when I last played (PES4) and it felt too slow. The list of niggling facets of the game I didn't really like were never-ending even though I kept telling myself, like in previous versions, that it would 'grow on me'. And sure enough, it did!

I got used to the controlled (not slow) build-up using passes to open up the defence. Players who were able now started to marsaille turn, step over and dummy in right parts of pitch. I hit a screamer with Frank Lampard from about 30m and it wasn't even 'lined up', which we all know from previous titles, that there were always sweet spots on the pitch to score from. I started to notice little animations too like different ways on dribbling for certain players, and striking the ball, particularly volleying and half volleying felt great. My first goal was from inside the box and was crossed low where it was hit first-time by Joe Cole. He did not not strike the ball 100% sweetly, it was one of those shots that bounced into the ground first - but it went it due to the closeness of the attempt. I loved it!

A few days ago I had the chance to play PES5 and much was the same as WE9. However, the most pleasing thing for me was that it played just that little bit faster (as I understand this is the case with all PESversions). Also I had my first major experience with Beckham and his majestic free-kicks. I played a cup and won at least 6 free-kicks around the box... I banged in 4 of them! This is not to say that free-kicks are easy now but they seem to be more realistic, for example more dip seems to have been added. Whether its just me I don't know but certain players who everyone thinks of as good free-kick specialists (Carlos ahem!) now seem capable of getting it all wrong and blasting way wide of goal. This pleased me alot :) although I think his accuracy has been put down to 77.

I could go on and on...but unfortunately work beckons. I hope this has given some insight into the gameplay. For me it's a big thumbs up just as I knew it would be.

From what ive played of PES5 the only down sides I can see is that when a player is running at full speed the animation of the player running, looks as if ur running much slower, a kinda sliding effect takes place! Thou free kicks do feel slightly easier ive scored with Beckham and Lampard from freekicks and I havent had that many!

Played PES5 demo today, the game is much better than 4, the way the ball moves, crosses and shots all better. I just have two initial gripes:

1. Dribbling - They've made it more realistic by slowing it down , but it seems there is no difference to someone with 90+ dribble to someone with 70+ dribble.

2. Music - As always the music is utter pants and the commentary is still a joke.

Anyway got that out the way, I know i'll probably get used to it over time and it will make sense but I can't help feeling something's not right more so than the year before and the year before that. As for the music and commentary I expected that anyway.

Post your thoughts.

Should we post our impressions of the demo in the demo thread rather than here?

Probably... too late now!

One's started by Zyg and the other Hitman so it's not some random chump starting a thread for no reason!

Just wondering, are 2 footed Tackles possible?

And can you register created players onto teams?
eg. i create myself, is it possible to put me onto the manchester united squad?

cheers

First Impressions based on Ps2 version

Hi Guys,

I wanted to play this game for a lengthy period before making my judgement on it, as it felt very different to PES4. After completing the master league for a couple of seasons, I now a have a good idea of the difference in feel.

The general gameplay I think has improved with the slower feel of the game. You get time to make more decisions and plan rather than just react. This is definately a positive.

The shooting from the outside range is great, you get a few more chances than previous due to the speed of the game, and I have to admit I score frequently from ranges that I did not even attempt in PES4. However sometimes it just doesnt feel right, if i get a little closer and try to shoot past the goalkeeper, he stops the ball more often than not unless I do some nifty little manuevers. However if you shoot the from a greater distance I seem to score more often, and sometimes shots that you would feel the goalkeeper should be able to get to. This is the part of the game that I have not liked, PES4 was better in this regard, and chipping the ball and choosing to kick to a specific area of the goal was more "fun". Now its a matter of kick and you will most times get past the keeper.

When applying pressure, its very difficult not to foul, when I went to bed last night, I could still hear the refrees whistle. This is also a little annoying, as you have to plan to get teh ball headon and even a skilled defender cant do much when the opposition is near him. Slide tackling is almost impossible compared to PES4. Definately makes the game harder but some of the "wow" moments have been eliminated as a result, instead it ends in a whistle.

When you run with ball, no matter how fast the player with the ball, you will be caught very quickly by the opposition, even if you dribble the ball way infront of you so that you dont lose momentum, and if the computer has the ball, its very difficult to catch them in same scenario, thus its an advantage to the computer, once again adds to the difficulty of the game, but takes away some consistencies.

I played the PC demo, and it seems a little different, I feel the PC version of the game is always better and has a more simulated feel to it, but the demo is not enough for me to make a call on.

Overall, it is still the best soccer game out there, and many improvements have been introduced and the game is much harder than PES4, but there are some things that still can be improved, perhaps there should be a simulated and Arcade option, where the simulated can be as the game is and the Arcade makes it easier to do more spectacular things such as you could in PES4. PES5 feels like the simulation version of PES4, which had a more arcady feel about it.

Thanks KONAMI I think I have spent 10% of my life playing this game since te very first version. :D

A few people have commented on the fact that the referee whistles more now in the game. Although at first I found this highly annoying, it actually reflects the state of the game IRL. Most times in PES5 the ball is won back via interceptions not tackles - as with real life. You can still put in some 'meaty' tackles but they must be timed to an even greater degree now. It is infuriating when a little nudge sometimes can bring about a foul as the opposition can fall like flies, but I feel the same when watching internationals or european games (and, to a degree, in the Premiership) when players seem to go down like they've been shot! Sadly, it's the way the game is played now, PES5 merely reflects it. :)

You want arcade? Go buy FIFA!

I've played the demo now and gotta say i love it!

it just 'feels' more realistic, the weight of the ball and the players is perfect.

Dribbling will take a while to get used to though but as always we WILL get used to it!

Love the new shooting animations, much better!

Didn't really notice the fouling to be honest, you do have to wait for the right moment and like in real life just stick with your man until there's an opening then pounce!

Player likenesses are great and the Arsenal and Chelsea kits are damn cool, been waiting so long for these...

The one immprovement i noticed which i'm not sure i've seen mentioned is the new sense of perspective you now get with the pitch. On the 'Wide' camera angle (and i assume on the others) you really feel that the players on the far side are actually further away, they are ever so slightly smaller than the players nearer the camera on the near side. Sometings definately been changed and it looks really good i think. Just all adds to the realism of the game! The 20th can't come quck enough!

I agree with all what you said there.

For me the controled shot seems like a sweet spot. I keep scoring of it (especialy with Pie Man Ronaldo) without much in the way of skillful input from myself

I found that it was pretty easy to score off it aswel but then again most of mine were just inside the box clear on goal when the striker SHOULD score so just realistic really.
