Lyon opened their account with a thumping 4-1 defeat at home to Newcastle. The game was fairly even but Newcastle created the better chances and Coupet was outstanding in the Lyon goal. Stupid thing was Lyon had a couple of really great chances of their own and whilst keeping the score respectable a soft goal followed by a bizarre own goal (where the player I wasnt controlling just came and slide tackled the one I was controlling and the ball bounced into the net) made the scoreline seem very one sided.
Overall a good victory for The Toon and they did deserve the points.

In a highly entertaining contest, khalidd came out the better side of a 4-1 scoreline which saw an amazing display from Lyon's French goalkeeper Coupet.
The first half was an even affair until Lee Bowyer threaded through Jenas to smash home on the half hour. Five minutes later and Khalid was 2 up with a penalty area scramble being side-footed home by Michael Owen. There could have been more however as Coupet twice thwarted Owen before Sylvain Wiltord powered home an unstoppable header in injury time to give Huw hope for the second half.
Huw started the second half at a higher tempo as he went in search of an equaliser and came close as first John Carew blasted over from the edge of area and then Florent Malouda's shot was palmed away by Given. Khalid hit back when Keiron Dyer was denied one if the goals of the century by a superb last ditch tackle by Revelliere. Dyer picked up the ball in his 6 yard box after a Lyon move broke down and set off on a mesmerising run up field taking on 6 Lyon players, stopping to tie his shoe laces and signing autographs for fans before his shot was knocked out by the French defender. Shearer was then denied by the inspired Coupet before Owen and a typically French show of buffoonary put the result beyond doubt.
After the match, a dishevelled Lyon chief Huw was quoted as saying "I am very angry today...... Keiron dyer refused to sign my t-shirt"
In sharp contrast Newcastle boss Khalid was in typically buoyant mood, stating that his team were "clearly the better side" and that he would be surprised if his French counterparts ended the season any higher than 8th. He was also quoted as saying that there was "much more to come" from "my team of superstars".
Khalids team currently sits pretty at the top of the league with a huge goal difference. Lyon on the other hand are struggling near the botom of the league, and by the looks of it few would disagree with Khalid's comments on Lyon.
