I think you lot are also forgetting that with some teams the AI takes it up an extra notch in derby matches. I'm using Celtic for my ML team and played Rangers twice on TP. First game was pretty standard 2-0 win for me, but the second game was extremely tough ending in 5-4 to Rangers. To me its just the AI learning what tactics your using and then countering them to the point where it looks like its cheating but its not. Plus it doesnt matter how good a team you have, sometimes they just have an off day. Moral of the team also plays a part in play. Holding the ball well and stringing passes together builds moral and makes it much easier to roll over the comp.

ok. trouble is here, your playing it like its a game, play it like a real football match so to speak. Its the only way i can put this.
I play Pro Evo with my mates (4 of us), fixed players and our own created team (its our shitty sunday league team and we try to be harsh on our skills), which have skill levels around where Derby is.... 70/80's.
We put the game on Top Player!... got hammered 4-1, 4-1, 4-1!... we were like ... " huh, fook sake! "... so i said, " ok, lets play the game, like a real football match, not like PES6 " (where u can run about and not play "football", like FIFA).
So we decided to strengthen up our midfield (as it was getting overrun by quick players) and played the next game aggresively (hitting opposing players hard, sliding tackles etc.) and then the COM AI got aggresive and lost pace and percision (cant spell), resulting in us breaking down each attack, and them givin many free kicks and one penalty away!
(sorry about the story lol)
my point was anyway that i feel the game is far more challenging, Konami have tried to get the get more to what it is, tactics, control, pace. And so far... i see success! just some people can't deal with it.

I have to disagree on some points. Even though i've got it on the ps3. Free kicks aren't scores that much at All, except when it's juninho or riquelme or so, they will often knock it in. If it doesn't work, try adding defenders to the wall and make them run out if they shoot. And sending a defender to the post.
As for the difficulty. I've just won a WC with England, you REALLY have to change your way of playing like they say (team vision bullshit). If you keep sending passes to ronaldinho they will mark him with two players. Besides, you MUST play 15 minute matches because if you play a 10 minute match and conceed the second goal in the 55th minute or so it's hardly possible to draw let alone win. You need the time.
And it's not about Robinho's speed but his crappy body balance, which is a lot more important than his speed.
And I must say I haven't been cheated yet (played the game for about 50 hours)

no shame in the PS2 version
Not sure i think konami has kinda messed up the PS2 version, i mean, no diving and shirt pulling (which is cheating i know) they coulda made it so much better. But dont get me wrong i am loving the game =) think i am addicted lol
anyway.....i am liking top player, when on form i can thrash teams, like yest i played manu then everton (i am lfc btw) and i won 6-2 and 4-1 and was on fire. a bit unreaslitic i know then i played boro and lost 3 nil haha so bit hit and miss, also when i play everton in the 1st half they flew at me pumping up long balls i r struggled and they went ahead with a nuno valente screaming volley but pulled it round lol anyway enough of my stories, i think top player is class =)
