Will the PES series ever return to it's glorious heights of PES5/6?

Let's face it, PES2008 was a poor game in relation to previous Evo installments. Unless you happen to be a 'fanboy', which most of this forum seem to be.

Can anyone see PES2009 getting close to the likes of PES5/6 in terms of enjoyable, realistic gameplay, couples with a strong depth of features and editing tools?

Poor animations, high speed, awful lack of editing tools, and an embarissing lack of teams compared to FIFA.

I've been playing both FIFA and PES2008 recently, switching between the two and I seem to prefer FIFA, or at least appreciate that it needs less work compared to the arcade fest that is PES2008.

Now don't get me wrong, im usually a PES man myself, but you cant honestly argue that PES2008 is as enjoyable as previous versions?

Completely agree.. I fail to understand How some people say that "PES08 is NOT that bad as an off-line game" and that it just "needs a Tweak here and there".

That said, PES6 and PES5 where good for their time -However- 5 years after PES4, it is time for Konami to get past those games. They are still enjoyable -but- have far too many flaws; poor AI, a very limited set of Player Attributes, etc, etc..

And again, how is it possible that the PS3 versions have the same Controls, same set of Stats and Special Abilities, etc, etc.. It MUST improve because it CAN improve -and- because it is obvious that the PS3 is capable of producing a game twice as good as PES6.

Even if PES 2009 is just as enjoyable and addictive as PES5 -Konami- would still have to improve in many aspects, for one thing they SHOULD introduce New Player Attributes, a Next Gen Dribbling and Defensive System, a better Editing Mode, etc, etc..

Konami haves it relatively easy for PES 2009 -because- PES 2008 was so bad that anything playable would be welcomed. However, Konami haves (or should) to give us Significant Improvements (Differences) for PES 2010.

Konami should release Something Different (and new) for PES 2010 -instead- of the usual touched-up versions of past installments.

Alot of people critisise FIFA for trying new features, 'Be a Pro', 'First Touch' etc. but you have to appreciate that there trying to be inotiative.

PES needs a complete overhaul. I don't think its unreasonable at all, given the power of PS3/360, to expect a huge increase in teams, players, leagues and options in all aspects of the game.

It's not like they sacrificed increses in those sort of things for graphics, as there not exactly pushing the systems to the limits. Usually I look forward to the newest version of Pro Evo, but this year it seems i'll be looking forward to FIFA just as much, due to the fact that i don't expect much from PES2009

Well, I never look forwards to FIFA (or anything EA releases) -because- FIFA haves it all wrong, their Controls are too slow and complex for a Football game.. and ultimately gives a very poor interpretation of Football.

And honestly, I don't care that much about New Teams, New Licenses, etc, etc.. The thing I care about is the GAMEPLAY; Controls, Player Attributes, The Playing System of a Team, etc, etc..

I'm not expecting anything "Revolutionary" from PES 2009, I'm just expecting a slightly improved PES6 with good Graphics. Wich is by no means bad -but- considering that it is a PS3 game.. it should have Revolutionary Features in most Aspects.

I'm guessing we'll have to wait for 2010 for that.

Oh and as for FIFA and PES.. EA Sports still hasn't released a Football game as good as PES6 -so- Konami haves advantages in my opinion. I think they have a better Idea of what a Football Sim should be.

PES can get back on track. PES08 was the worst in the series by far but I still had periods where I enjoyed it.

I tried to like it, but I just couldn't.. all I got from it was disappointment.

Hopefully, PES 2009 will be something Different and New.

What i really miss is the editing feature. I could be spend hours editing kits and such, which was really quite enjoyable. I hear rumours that they have vastly improved the editing feature in theis years PES, which I'm happy about.

I think PES was always about little tweaks to the gameplay here and there, as the gameplay was always superb. But maybe now the fans just want more, they want a true 'Next Gen' edition of the game. Konami aren't delivering a true next gen version, just and shiny ps2 version, to be quite frank.

People want to see graphics on par with the best gaming titles out there. But these next gen football games don't seem to be delivering. People want to see a bit of innovation, a bit of experimentation. But Konami seem to be reluctant, or lazy, I'm not quite sure which. They seem to have transgressed from the ps2 version straight to the ps3 version, with little or no difference to the game at all, apart from slightly shinier players and stadiums. I suppose maybe they just don't know how to make a football game seem revolutionary, compared to all the other games out there.

Well with every update fans want more and more and more to be fair and to do this i suppose Konami has to make things different to make the game seem refreshed and of course in pes 2008 it didnt go down to well. I dont think pes 2009 will be a glorious game like some of its predecessors , but a definite step in the right direction.

We shouldn't be asking for a pes 1, 2, 3 etc. WE should be asking for something new, something awesome. i for one am tired of playing the previous versions. i really want something new.

When i was young and the ps2 came out i was like now we are going to see awesome stuff. i had high hopes but even till now i am dissapointed. For instance, there was no free will of passing where ever you want. no 16 directions etc.

It seems that with the next gen consoles it is now possible. So i am getting really excited. if pes2009 get's out and it misses some of the key features we all see in real football then i think it's time for Seabass and KONAMI to have a good talk cause with the next gen it's no time for excuses.

i know pes2008 was supposed to be next gen. But Seabass was honest about it even when it wasn't out yet. He also said making pes2008 was hard. ok fair. WE gave you 2 years and we all hope you can satisfy us.

mate there's been manual passing (360 degrees) since PES3, although they had the power gauge a bit messed for that but fixed it for PES4.

Was that manual passing? Then why did the cpu most of time decided where it goes and how hard?

I haven't seen a proper working manual passing yet in pes

are you havin a laugh? they've had it properly since PES4. you point the analogue stick in the direction you want, and then you click it for power. me an me mates score all the time from tight angles or when facing away from goal or things like that, just by pointin the stick towards a corner of the goal. you can't say it doesn't work, you just haven't practised it.

It does works properly for MOST of the time -however- is it properly working?? Of course NOT, why in hell would players CONSISTENTLY give ridiculous passes to NO one.

The Bottom Line is that it WAS good -but- it can certainly be much better.

And honestly, WHY do I have to use -the- L1 button + Triangle Button -just- to perform a Lobbed Through Pass?? Wouldn't it be more Simpler and Effective if we just Tapped the Triangle button Twice??

I think some Passing Controls could be Simpler (improved).. Certainly, some Aspects about Passing have room to Improve.

Very fair point man. I think the fans have every right though in asking for more. Everyone knew that the PS2 had restrictions and limits, however now we're comfortably in the next-gen stage Konami should be able to provide us with absolute quality and quantity.

Another point really is that Konami need to stray away from gimmicks that FIFA offer. PES 2008 seemed to use "Teamvision" as a way to market the game and sell it, which I guess worked before it was released to create hype. Unfortunately we all know that Teamvision was non-existant and in fact the AI was the worst ever in the series.

In my opinion I can't see PES reaching it's peak again. We have to remember that during the golden days, Konami only had build PES for the PS2, and maybe Xbox. Nowadays though, Konami have to release PES for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS and every platform going just about which means more workload, possibly decreasing the quality of the newer PES games.

Hunter, i kinda disagree. When Iss was released on the ps1 one it was the best football game out there. i do remember allot of fun i had with it. Even up till this day i sometimes play just for fun. Just becasue i had allot of un doesn't mean we should be playing the game for another 10 years. it should be improved. improving a game is difficult for Seabass's team. Why that is i don't know.

Shouldn't we also get a Classic in the PS3 -because- clearly, nobody will miss or play PES08 once PES09 is released.

On the other hand, I still play PES6 (and PES5) from time to time. Good games stand the Test of TIME -whereas- PES 2008 turns Old after 3 Hours of playing it.

Surely, Konami can do better.. And yes, we should ask for more and more each year (we shouldn't buy the same game year after year), even more considering the (so-called) "evolution" from the PS2 -to- the PS3.

There's no room for excuses NOW, we all know the PS3 is capable of handling much more features than the PS2.
