Demo gameplay First Impressions

Ali

It is happening again
I cannot play PES11 because of how boring I find it, so if PES12 is more of the same but even more boring.... Why do you find it more boring? The dribbling is too easy and dumbed down? What makes it stale and boring?

When I first started playing the PES 2011 demo, I loved it. My love for the full release has dwindled over time, it's now more of a love/hate relationship.
I can't pinpoint why I found it (PES 2012 demo) boring. It just didn't excite me (well... technically that's the definition of boring, but I can't think of a better explanation). Attacking felt very stale and slow. The AI did the same tactic over and over - just knock it past me then fall over resulting in a free kick.... maybe I need to be less hastey with my tackles though.

I'll give it another go tonight, maybe I was in a bad mood yesterday, though I don't think I was.

Will still get the 2nd demo, but if it doesn't improve greatly, I will seriously consider NOT buying PES this year.... which will be a first.

Started downloading it this morning and it was taking too long so will have to wait till I get back from work to try it out... What I'm most interested in are the off the ball controls... Are they any good? Do you guys use manual or assisted? Can you do without having to use it? Is it tricky to control both players? I guess I'll find out this evening but I don't think i'll get enough time to get a proper impression...

I like the demo! it's an unfinished product - but it feels very promising!

Been playing on PC, hardest level and the least passing-assistance allowed in the settings.

These are my impressions:

Good
- AI feels much more refined
- Much smoother gameplay (thanks to the improved AI)
- Opponents don't go down as easily when you tackle, if you just nudge them when you tackle it's more likely that they momentarily just lose their balance a bit (in 2011 they would fall on their ass, Barcelona-style, if you even touched them slightly)
- No more "catch-up bug"
- Keepers are better
- ...and so are the refs

Bad/not good enough
- With the exit of the "catch-up bug" defending is arguably much more harder. PES has imho always been shifted to the attacker's advantage, but even more so now. Perhaps it's just a question of (re-)learning how to defend and getting used to a new system, but it raises an eye-brow that attacking feels so easy and smooth, and defending feels so hard.
- Keepers are still not smart enough, might be corrected for the final version though
- the game is obviously still a bit "unpolished" with a few AI-bugs

If you play fifa for a long time , you eventually want something new.

I played fifa 11 online for about 300 matches~ don´t counting disconnects matches and lost about 70 of em.

bought 09 10 11, and all feel the same.

Game feels great on the ball, I think tackling needs a bit of work it's not as easy as it used to be. Then again PES always has a learning curve. Seems promising for a first demo release.

The gameplay in this demo is very similar to a FIFA game, I think.

Anyone had a penalty yet ?How are they, same as last years?Still the same silly side on cam?

The only goal I've scored was a penalty. Back to the good old from the back view.

Pens are back to normal.

For all the nice little improvements made the overall feeling for me is that it feels the most arcardy seen Pes 2008. The passing is more auto then ever with players been able to pass with no animation sometimes with their legs or body movement.

The one thing i could always count on in PES was the satifaction when you score a goal and that as gone big time in this demo on the PS3. Between the animation of the shot, the animation of the player when shooting and the animation of the ball hitting the net at 200mph as left me feeling nothing after the goal as gone in.

Will not judge until second demo but this demo has left me cold

I seem to be one of the few who actually appreciated the penalties in 2011....

once I got the hang of it I almost never missed one!

The following link * http://kitanamedia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5174 * explains why dribbling past defenders seems to be easier and also why running seems weird.... apparently, running seems to work like a responsive power bar system, where you get to time sudden bursts of speed, and apparently the result is that "explosive" star players are almost unstoppable.

To be honest, I don't know what to think; is the game smarter or dumber?

Yea its very easy to fly past players with R1+R2, I was flying past man utd players easily on top player, you just press R1+R2 when hes close enough and he cuts to one way and blews past him.

What my biggest problem is that you can only do it around the defender, it makes no sense.

So when you run using R1 your not actually running at full speed, when you use R1+R2 you burst to full speed but then stop and can only run with R1 again once ur past the player, it makes no sense because once someone goes past a player hes going to run FULL speed if he has a clear path against a goalkeeper, and same goes for defender, you can only use R1 to chase down the attacker that went past you even tho thats not your "full speed" since R1+R2 seems to speed a player up for a second if an opponent is by, it doesn't make sense to me.
You can tap R1 tho but I didn't notice any change of speed at all, actually a few times it feelt like the opponents had a easyer time closing me down when taping R1 then holding it. It just feels very odd to me all this.

manual passing sucks

Tried the demo last night, I understand it's still work in progress. The pass setting under controller option when put on manual the passing feels assisted as opposed to FIFA11 which you could loose the ball if not perfectly going to your teammate. For instance if you have two teammates say 10 feet apart in FIFA you can pass the ball to go in between two players but in PES it will go to whoever the CPU decides would be the best option for yea. This is no good for me.

^Thing is that in fifa 11, Essien can pass the ball like Xavi. THAT MAKES EVEN LESS SENSE.

As for the demo. Yes it has issues like the GK's spilling the ball too much,

close control being too good (tone it down a little, but not much),

less passing assistance (though not to a point where individuality is lost, I feel that this is very close to pes 11's passing which I truly liked),

better defending in the sense that currently it'll be a bit clustered and the AI players will get past you with ease sometimes. I want more control over my defence and I want better standing tackles because the response is A BIT OFF compared to the attacking side.'s response I understand that defenders are less responsive on the ball, but for tackling, the defenders should have higher response. THIS WILL SOLVE ALOT OF DEFENDING PROBLEMS.

That's basically it and pes 12 will be the best ever. The 2 major would be to make higher response for tackles especially the defenders, and tone down the close control a little but not much and this would be awesome.

Ofcourse the speed issue is there, but I feel that this is due to the game's unfinished state.

apparently you haven't played fifa11 in full manual, in full manual you're in control of ball passing and shooting etc, you can make plenty of errors passing in manual as opposed to fine tuned passes in CPU assisted where you only need to push the pass button and CPU would do your job <- how does this make sense?

BTW, you know how hard it is to score in manual! extremely difficult, and that's why manual settings are for men only :eek:hmy:

2 points i noticed last night (I only played one game)

1) Defending is really hard!! i normally use positioning of my defender and hold R2 to get in front of the player then hit X to tackle! I find this normally works best.
(although sliding tackles felt better) seems I end up button bashing alot!! as players skip past me

2) Shooting is wierd feels like no power in shots. even when you get free from your marker and hit the ball in your stride (which normally gets the best shots)

but sayinf this its prob just the usual time needed to adapt to a new version!

When I read all the comments there are common themes permeating; what were those guys thinking over at we_blog. Seems like they were praising all the things getting knocked on here. Did the game change drastically from their early demo and what is available to all of us now?

Since one-user can play off the ball to control 2 players at at time, can 2 users control 4 players in 2 vs 2 matches?

Sorry but this argument is dumb. It's not about making a game more difficult, I was talking about individuality of the player you're controlling, not your skill.

The game can be as challenging as in full manual, with non manual controls.

The difficulty fifa 11 offers in manual is because it's manual, but that completely destroy the player individuality I was talking about AND PEOPLE ARE FORGETTING THIS MAJOR ISSUE, because they're busy thinking they're THE BEST just because they play manual.

BTW, I do not mean to start a fight, just pointing out a fact that people who play fifa in manual forget. :)
