There are some goods and bads.
The good:
-Thank god for :square: to get a teammate near the ball to challenge for it, or to coax a teammate near a loose ball to actually run it down instead of retreating to their pre-programmed positions. Makes it so much easy to play pesky defense in the midfield and generate counterattacks
-The training points to get cards before you hit a combination of ability ratings automatically give it to you. I'm a long way from the 80s in the shot abilities that used to earn 1-on-1 finish so even though my shot attributes are middle 70s it's helped me finish a lot of breakaways that used to fail miserably.
-Calling for a pass while making a run is much improved in that they'll usually try to lead you. As opposed to 2010 where calling for a pass usually got the ball kicked towards where you were when your hand went up and you'd always overrun it.
The Bad:
-All the little dumb things the AI constantly try to do but never work, but they attempt it every single time anyway. Such as:
1. The volleys from outside the box when a corner is headed away that always miss the net or are saved easily.
2. The off balance no-chance shots attempted when a teammate is running down a ball rolling towards the opponents endline
3. The attempts to control a ball headed into touch and giving the other team a throw when if they'd just stop and let it go out of bounds it'd be your throw.
4. Receiving a throw-in and promptly turning and launching it into the stands, giving the other team possession back. This one doesn't happen constantly but it's certainly annoying when it does.
5. A defender racing toward a ball in the box when the goalie could easily scoop it up, beating the goalie there and launching it out of bounds
-No creativity on throw-ins or free kicks.
1. Throw-ins especially when you're in the opponents 18 yard portion of the field. They either go to the teammate waiting near the sideline or are launched into the top corner of the box (EVEN WHEN NOBODY'S THERE!). Whenever I'm defending an opponents throw in my own 18 yards and see him rear back to let one fly, I know exactly where to sit in the box so I'm guaranteed to get a clearing header on it every single time
2. Free kicks taken by a teammate just beyond shooting range are ALWAYS sent back post and 98% of the time it rolls harmlessly over the endline. Having noticed this if I start my player way out wide and time my sprint to the back post right I might be able to get a foot on the other 2%. Coincidentally when I take my teams free kicks our success rate goes through the roof simply because I can choose to play a variety of balls into the box. Why hasn't the AI been given this information?
-Defenders still track back to their default areas when falling back into defense, even if they're the last guy back in position to mark an opponent who's about to be streaking in alone on net. I can mitigate this somewhat with judicious use of :square: but they often have to change direction and can't do it quick enough to do anything but desperately try to chase the breakaway down.
-AI teammates having very little concept of being able to play passes and through balls in the air. While I'm happy they've learned to try and lead their passes when I call for one, it's always on the ground. This one is especially puzzling because even in PES 2010 a teammate would occasionally see me streaking towards the opponents back line and hit me with a long (air) pass or a chipped through ball, even if they were 20-30 yards behind me. This is one area where FIFA got it right and PES needs to emulate it immediately. Instead of double-tapping :r2: you're able in FIFA to just hit the button corresponding to the pass most likely to be successful and it calls for that specifically.
-Progression seems painfully slowed. For attributes like speed and acceleration I can understand this being a more realistic change. Players don't just start out at 17 with 78/80 and magically get that up into the 90s in a few short years. But stuff like stamina takes forever to up 1 point, even when my player is getting 4000 minutes of play over the course of a season. Why the hell isn't my stamina increasing!? And at least in PES 2010 it kinda realized that if you're netting your chances, scoring lots of goals, etc. it would increase your shot meters a little faster Same thing if you were playing great defense, having success with headers, etc. IMO certainly 2010 had a really too-generous progression model (Had a 66 DMF magically jump up to 98 within 5 seasons), but they took it too far in the opposite direction this year. I'd love for someone at Konami to clue us in on how the progression model is affected by early-late growth designations, and all that jazz. Granted my 2011 BAL player is nearing the end of his 4th season as an AMF and my overall has went from 67->79, but for someone who assigns ample training points to shooting and nets a whole lot of goals my shot stats are still middling in the 70s, my header and jump stats seem stagnant even though I do well in the air, etc.
WHEW. Given all "The Bad" it's amazing I still play this game. But as much as I found to complain about PES, 2 weeks with FIFA had me ripping my hair out.
Having known what I do now my next BAL player will certainly be starting off with good speed and I can worry about building the rest up from there. 79-80 with molasses growth makes it tough to evade the brutish "grab and bodycheck you off the ball" defenders.
