I've been doing some testing on this with a mate. We'd start an exhibition game on amateur and just pass the ball around the defenders with some players (trying our best not to make mistakes) and then with others purposefully playing shite balls, losing it and never intercepting.
As was to be expected the ratings were according to who passed better etc.
Then we thought well what if we take these players out of position, so continuously chased the ball with one player (a defender) but not actually getting the ball (or very rarely) for the entire game, while also using another to win the ball as much as possible.
The results of this were weird, both received the same 7.5 rating. So basically we assume it comes down to your involvement in the game and the proximity to the ball regardless of the fact you are out of position. In the end when we viewed the stats of these 2 players pretty much the whole pitch was covered in green to display where we'd ran, whereas the 2 (COM controlled) defenders who stayed in position got 5.5 and 6.0 and covered nothing.
So yeah, we'll play around with the midfield next, but I wouldn't bet on the results being different.
