Cheating!

But I appreciate it is a necessity early on.

I know it's cheating but it's really hard to start, and I really wanted to learn the basics of the game before I join up with you lot so you don't all think I'm a complete moron. And to my defence I bought this game not knowing what gameplay is like and after only watching one of the videos Dundon's posted..God that dude makes this game look easy. I've still yet to really read into what this game is about, what weapons and kit there are and how you heal yourself etc! I'm not sure how to get your blood full again or how to heal broken bones etc but I'm guessing it's because I haven't come across alot of the items.

I'm determined to get you guys non-cheating and scavenging and surviving like me, so check the below:

That's the aim for me. My map reading skills are shit anyway!

I will definitely be online tonight and will be staying later than usual as no work tomorrow! I plan to scare the shit out of Appswah.

I'm going to be on later, it will scare the shit outta me as the only people I've seen online so far I've hid from

I should be on tonight and will probably have a look for that "Zombie Go Home" server that Dundon's is using. If you don't play the game for a while it can take a bit of time to familiarise yourself with the controls so I feel more comfortable now after playing the other night.

Do any of you use headsets at all and if so how does it work in terms of in game i.e. do you only talk on specific channels or do you use an external application? I noticed that Apps mentioned something about a headset and I have a PS3 headset that is supposedly PC compatible so I might try it out.

I've found the server and it does look quite good. I did enter at one point yesterday to see people talking about a hacker but I don't know the entire story as I was automatically kicked for a reason I don't know haha.

I've got a headset and was going to ask about how we communicate, back when I use to play CSS alot (I mean alot ) we use to use a program called teamspeak (i think? It's been a while lol). If it's ingame voice we use you're going to have to show me the buttons as I've not worked them out yet  I'm sure every keyboard button has a function though!

Haha oh shit. Got killed by some cunt who I had helped kill the zombies chasing him.

Spawned again, went up into a tower right near where I spawned, found an m4 and now I'm stuck on the roof as the place is over run with Zombies. Never seen so many!!

FUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

Just ran 3/4 towards where phats was and some dick shoots me. I had nothing but a machete. I was talking to him saying there's no point but he kept shooting me so i just dodged as many bullets as I could before he killed me...I was wide open and there was nowhere to hide.

It's hard when your running round with fuck all and other people have high powered rifles and shit.

Christ. This game is so hard.

So after dieing I spawned in Prigorodky. I went into town and searched the barns to see what I could find and along the way found a dead player who had, by the looks of it, been trying to get into a car and failed lol. So I picked up his food, water and his hatchet. Armed with a hatchet I searched the barns and the only thing worth mentioning was an enfield rifle but no ammo I so it there.

From Prigorodky I headed north east through a forest to Pusta where I found another hatchet and various types of ammo (nothing of use to me atm, apart there was enfield ammo!) Anyway I went into town and learnt how to fill up my water bottle. I then headed east to a barn which is where I left it so far, the barn is just northwest of Topolka damn.

My plan is to keep heading east as I know Phats is over in that direction somewhere, hopefully we can meet up at some point as running round on your lonesome is quite scary lol.

I managed to meet Appswah in-game the other day; not that he realised.

I directed him to a shared meeting point that I was also meeting a mate at. On the way there, I took a sensible, hidden route atop a mountain and through the cover of trees. Apps was running around like a lunatic coast-side.

Apps, remember I said I could see you? If I was a sniper, you were dead.

I then found you crouching around some buildings in Prigorodky, ran up next to you with my shotgun, bumped into you a few times and then ran off.

That meant - follow! Wasn't able to stop and type as there were zombies everywhere. I also had to be sure my mate wouldn't shoot you on sight (forgot to warn him I was planning on meeting you) so I just continued running.

Phatmann Dundon's Appswah Will be online tonight if everyone fancies having a stab at meeting up?

I know I know lol. I panicked as everytime I've come across someone, even when I've tried to speak to them I end up dead.

I'm not sure if I'll be on tonight.

Which server are you playing on? If it's that same one Apps was on before then I will be on the very south-east of the map if it keeps my spawn point. If it's zombies go home then I could spawn anywhere.

It was neither. This one was annoying as you start out with nothing ro I ran from Elektro to Cherno and then realised I had no food or water and was like fuuuuuu.

I quite like the one I found where you spawned south east. I've headed that way so I don't think Im too far away from you at all.

I have indoor football tonight 9-10 so it's unlikely that I'll be able to hook up, shur work away and lay some ground works. Maybe set up a tent somewhere up north-ish.

What's the server called you and Apps are on about?

Always game for finding a new server, especially if you guys are already established and, crucially, alive.

Me and my mates had some epic fun yesterday on one of our two regular servers - the German one this time.

It was genuine World War II stuff - our English folk (with one tag-along called "Polski" - i.e. me) vs. their German crew. They were talking to each other in German on the main chat channel and we were trying to intercept and translate messages on the fly and get clues as to what they were up to.

We had Elektro - one of us had a vantage point atop the hospital with looks on all the surrounding areas.

At one point, ze Germans tried to fly in reinforcements by helicopter but two us flanked their landing zone (thanks to our eagle-eyed lookout directing the two who were on foot) and ambushed them. Lots of deaths, lots of carnage - great fun.

Upon returning victorious from this ambush, I made my way up to join my mate on the hospital. I wasn't vocal enough, however - with all the other madness going on in our four-way Skype call - and so he shot me as I mounted the rooftop. Killed by my own - much to the amusement of the Germans.

This frantic stuff carried on for a solid hour and a half and we finally got the message that the server restart was 10 minutes away and night was then going to fall.

We managed to commandeer three motorised dinghies and make our way north and east along the coast - disembarking just north of the shipwreck on the east coast where we could see two jeeps parked tantalisingly on the beach.

Little did we know, our German friends had done the exact same thing about 10 minutes before us and planted those jeeps there as a trap.

The server restarted just after we got to land and when we came back in it was night. To create some light but to save losing our primary weapons, we turned the headlights of the jeeps on while we got our bearings - and then we were ambushed.

All four of us were taken out inside about 30 seconds. Those sneaky Germans.

This game is fucking amazing. I only wish I recorded all this - it would've made an awesome video, especially as there was an atmosphere about it all that was so real.

The four of us communicating and panicking on microphone and the Germans thinking they were talking in secret on text chat was special.

Fuckers, sounds like a right laugh, I (Dundons) tried to install it on my Laptop but it isnt powerful enough to run the game(its 3 or 4 years old) so I am now thinking of bringing my Pc into my front room(much to the dislike of my wife)

Sounds like you spend way more time fighting each other than fighting actual zombies in this game. I wonder if this would be true in a real life zombie apocalypse?

I'm thinking yes, yes it would. Because human beings are bastards.

I really want to play this game but there is no release date for a console version I can find and my ancient PC wont support it.

Bah!

The reality of it being a game unfortunately dawns on you eventually and you once you reach a certain level of ability, the zombies pose little threat.

If you find a server with nothing but newbies, ideally ones who have never come across a human player, the dynamic is completely different. I started out on those and coming across another human - which was rare, because they were all scared shitless like I was and would hide if they saw another human - would lead to some very benevolent and mutually-beneficial encounters.

Once you negotiate the newbie zombie threat, the challenge of the game invariably becomes survival against other humans.

You then have the outliers, like me, who are perfectly satisfied with the survival aspect of the game. I don't really seek out conflict (unless I'm playing a drop-in mental session with my mates) and could quite happily just go about my business, surviving, acquiring gear and supplies, moving from area to area, interacting in a friendly way with those I come across (or hiding if they look dangerous).

It's a game that is open-ended enough to allow different styles to cohabit in a server.

On a separate note, here's my list of favourited servers - the first two are the ones I am most likely on at any given time:

185.2.136.156:3238 DayZChernarus [EXTRA BARRACKS & BUILDINGS | NEW VEHICLES & WEAPONS | SAFE TRADE ZONE | NO FOG NOR RAIN | SKINS & BASES FOR CLANS | TSW ANTI-HACK & ACTIVE ADMINS][VETERAN CH:ON](1.7.6.1/103419) DayZ Portugal

5.63.147.148:3068 DAYZ-UK-CHERNARUS-ACTIVE-FRIENDLY-ADMIN-CUSTOM MAP-AI PATROLS-AUTO-REFUEL-RUN-BY-ADULTS-NORTHWALESDAYZSQUAD-(1.7.6.1/102591)

88.198.53.88:2302 DE 1000 Custom Buildings|Cities|400+ Vehicles|NPC Fortress|Realistic Crashsites|Extra Barracks|Wrecks|StorageBoxes|CarePackages|StartEquip|ActiveAdmins|Veteran|1.7.6.1|104648

The last one starts you with a silenced pistol and some stuff to keep you going but is very PvP-oriented.

The Portugal server is by far my favourite - been in there a lot and am starting to get to know some other players. It has a good mix of friendly and hostile - they also have a strong community and run events sometimes. Yesterday they had a "Hunger Games" event set on an island where everyone was stripped of their gear and it was last-man-standing wins. I missed it but my mate said it was good fun.

Is there any actual goal in the game? Or is it simply just to survive as long as possible? Does your character level up in any way? It must get a little dull after a while to not have any actual tasks to do rather than "go to town Suchathing, scavenge what I can, go to next town, don't die... etc etc".

Question number 2 answers question number 1 - there is no defined 'goal' or set of 'goals'; it is a survival sim.

Ali_BWFC said:

Nope - the levelling-up procedure is an organic one. You are only as good as the gear you have. Naturally, the more you survive, the more you are likely to explore and therefore the more you are likely to find better supplies. You might even try and establish a robust base, with cars to stash your extra gear in.

Ali_BWFC said:

It hasn't got dull for me. The reality is there are always new and evolving threats to your safety - mainly in the form of other human players.

I do see your point, though - I imagine if I was the only player in a server, there would only be so long I would find it enjoyable.

Someone will always come along to try and kill you eventually. And there are so many ways to approach it, it doesn't get boring.

Do you try and make friends? Do you hide and try and follow them? Do you just fuck with them and try and scare them? Do you get as far away from them as possible?

These possibilities and many more are what keeps the game engaging. And for every variable you have in your own head, you're dealing with a volatile human player who could do anything really.

The non-linearity of the progression actually makes it infinitely more varied than "do this, earn XP, level up, do this, earn XP, level up" or similar.
