Death of dribbling

What the hell is up with dribbling in this game. It's almost impossible to do. I agree in PES 2008 it was probably too easy, even Essien could dribble like a god.

But in 2009 it was just right, guys like Kaka, Messi and C Ronaldo were great at dribbling (as they are in real life) and average dribblers were just average.

In PES 2010 it's pretty much impossible to go on a mazy run. You press the analog stick in a certain direction and the player moves 2 seconds later. And now because of the '360' dribbling the player does not move at a sharp angle whilst on a speed dribble and is easily tackled.

This has hampered my enjoyment of this game. Everything feels so unresponsive. You press shoot and the player shoots 2 seconds later, same with passing.

That's not right. Kaka and messi can dribble yes, but they can't run the whole field like in pes 09.
Pes 10 takes time to get used to. Also the 360 dribbling is really useful. Turning in directions and using speed + well timed moves (unlike in pes 09) you can beat a defender, however not everyone. It depends on the situation. That's more realistic if you ask me. Also, 2 seconds seem too long. It's not 2 seconds at all. Sometimes it may do it, but as I said, this all depends on the situation.

Messi and co cant beat the whole team in real life so I am very glad they cant on this PES. Beating a player now becomes art and you feel really pleased when you do it. I dont want to be able to just get a good player and beat people then score. Wheres the fun or challenge in that. Watch football and you will see this doesnt happen so it shouldnt happen in a simulaton.

There are some people online who are getting really good at dribbling now with the likes of Messi. Hard to play against but not unstoppable like before.

I agree, you cant dribble in a straight line anymore and just mysteriously drift past players, you need to anticpate the opponent coming and move before. However I have to agree with you about the response times, particularly online which make life very difficult/frustrating to say the least.

yeah i agree with the 2 secound delay it depends on the situation like i find if it gets crowded with players

its not impossible this year but its difficult at times. if you just hold R1 its hard to dribble succesful.

Btw, are you playing on the ps3, because on the PC version what the OP said is almost dead on.

Maybe my dribbling sucks, but holding l1, hitting r1 at the right time to run past defender, none of it works because the players responds to slow. It's the same with me for passes so I'm guessing the PC version is more messed up that the others.

I'm playing on a 4:3 non-vsync resolution too. bummer... the master league is so interesting.....

Totally disagree. I have made at least one mazy run with Messi which was brilliant (through the middle and got a shot off to score, almost like Fabgregas' goal against Spurs last weekend). The dribbling is more realistic, and more challenging now IMO, because when you make a play like that you feel like you've done something really special, like such a run would be in real life (happens maybe 1-2 times per match tops). PES 09 dribbling was way too easy, and absolutely ruined the game for me, because it made it too one dimensional. Also, I think the 360 dribbling is a great advancement, espcially for wing play or when coming one on one with the keeper. It also sounds like you need to practice more, because you say that you don't turn on tight angles, but you can do 90 degree turns as well as plenty of new moves which open up the dribbling and provide much more variety than we've had previously, once you learn the new skill-set.

Get used to the game, and I think you will see that PES 09 was a broken game mainly because the dribbling (90 degree turn and fake shots in particular) which were way too easy to exploit.

Yes ps3. Maybe your PC is slightly low on specs?
I know, it has button delay, but not as much as the OP said. It's good. Actually reminds me a bit of pes 3. That had lower response than pes 5.
I know it can be frustrating, but I find it worse at passing in a crowded area or when a defender is pushing you. Otherwise it's ok, not as responsive as before, but not that bad either.

Yeah the only situations i find the reaction times annoying is when i'm controlling a striker and i'm about to have a go.. Otherwise it doesn't bother me, as i dont just use R1 sprinting like a mad man - Only on the wings though..

agreed, fair enough.

i hope they reduce it for the 2011 version though, while keeping dribbling tough. a little like pes 6...

Having just come across from FIFA10 to PES I have had to deal with the jerky movements of the players... but using the 360 degree dribbling does at least make me feel more in control. The speed of the player movement still seems a bit unrealistic but i can deal with that. In most other respects this is truly a very rewarding footy sim... something very special about scoring a goal in PES2010 that FIFA10 just didn't have for some reason?

Anyway I think the more PES work on the 360 movement aspect the better... and it should be tough to beat your man, I only attempt it with the right players at the right time and it feels great =)

I agree with you in the 90 degree turn from pes2009, but the passing thru the defenders, that was fixed by a patch released by konami early, and after that, it wasnt as easy to dribble pass a defender, and the defense system was tweaked.

so now what konami did was to totally re do the dribbling system and vanish the infamous messi 90 degree turns, and now the turns are super slow and the response is very late

and that you cant disagree on that the responsiveness of pes2009 was spot on.

I have dribbled the entire field several times in pes2010, but this time around it feels like a real achievement to do it, unlike previous versions. The responsiveness of the players are a bit on the daft side in pes2010 though, especially on the ball.

WRONG - Messi and Ronaldo could beat the whole team if they wanted to but they don't.

In a football game where you are controlling the player you should be able to choose what you do and be able to do it. This game forces you to play it like real life because of the broken mechanics, so the outcome is realistic - i.e. passing it instead of dribbling. Only you can't dribble at all so it's not even balanced.

Well, obviously they couldn't, otherwise they would. Thing is though, put either of them up against a team that acts like the PES AI and not only would they beat each and every one of them, they'd also score four hat-tricks every game. The balance needs to be in the game and this time it's accomplished through lack of responsiveness and clumsy movement by the players. Understandable, but I wish people would stop trying to paint it as 'realism' or 'simulation', which it quite simply is not.

I disagree with the OP, I think dribbling is much more realistic this year, and you can skin people once you get used to it. And no, Messi and Ronaldo CAN'T 'beat the whole team' as has been said, the days of players being able to dribble through an entire side are long gone.

^^They're not long gone but definetly harder. The ability to knock the ball around with the off the ball movement has turned this game into a tactical one imo. Unlike in fifa when Messi gets the ball and im using a lesser team i get scared im gona get torn up but when xavi gets it i feel safe in the kowledge he isnt going to chew up my defence and spit them out like Messi and Ronaldo. Player individuality is so key to this game.
