Demo gameplay First Impressions

Asked my friend whose last PES was 08 how he found the demo (he'd been online for a bout 3-4 hours playing pes 2012 demo) and he said "It's not bad for once"

I think quite a few people who have been getting fifa in recent years will get this one

Haven't tried the game myself(360 user), bit concerned by reports of ultra fast response times and dumbed down dribbling, I loved how weight and momentum were implemented into the dribbling for pes 2011 and have a feeling konami might have koped out to please the fifa fans.

I have a feeling the second demo will be more in line with pes 2011 and the retail will be somewhere in between, I grew to love pes 11 and hope konami dont change too much.

Will have to wait to see for myself and I cant judge the game yet, I too would like to see some videos of the manual RS player movement options, could really open up the game.

Could someone please confirm whether manual pass with LT modifier is still in the game? I think i heard someone on evo web mention its still a pass option along side pass support settings.

My first impressions, having played 2 and a half games, it is at least 600,000 times better than 2011. Although I had to put it on speed +1. I hate slow football games, and 0 speed is very slow, I tried +2 but that was like they were all on chrystal meth or something.

Everything seems more controlled, free kicks seem like they will fly in once I get the hang of them, shooting no longer goes into row Z all the time (although I am still getting used to how much power to apply)

Only concern at the moment is that if you (or at least I) run on a diagnal, then turn slightly, flicking R2, the player has not yet kicked the ball ahead of him like has been a feature in every pro ev I can remember.

So far though, I really like it. I don't want the final cut to be drastically different - I've never been so happy about a pro ev based on its demo.

Anyone have any information concerning Canadian PSN store users? I have search but am still not quite sure when the PSN store updates for Canadian users.

for the US players like myself…..you will have to create an account for the UK to get the PSN download. Its pretty easy though.
Get an address for a McDonald’s in London and use it.

I know its an unfinished game so it hard to cast judgement at this time but as far as i am concern the game has a few issues to iron out.

there is no fluidity
the players get stuck in transition
Players move by themselves when you first grab control
Keepers are still bad
Defending is confusing
cursor change is horrific
camera angle now makes it difficult to place where the ball is going when in mid air.

…..but the graphics look gooood

to name a few

Wont be happy if cursor change is still fucked although I found semi assist bearable in pes 2011, has to be worked on if this is still the case as it can be highly irritating. Unassisted cursor change was unusable in pes 2011.

Love the look of new pitchside cam, hopefully broadcast is still in too.

Thank fuck we can finally turn off AI interventions such as auto clearance and auto shot/pass which should never exist in the first place.

@Amateur:
Have you tried to start play from the back by using the off the ball movement feature? For example, using Barcelona, is it possible to hold the ball with Gerard Pique and move Xavi Hernandez towards the ball carrier?
You can move any player, where you want and when you want, with the manual off the ball control. I did it with Berbatov to move him near Rafael, to fake a cross and pass it to him.

Yeah I read that, it sounds cool, I can do the same exact thing with PES10 by using either the "Strategy A" or "Strategy B" and simply moving just one individual across the width of the pitch and leaving the rest of the players as an identical copy of the original set up; as a result, whenever I press the L2 button + tap the short passing button, the selected target will move across the width of the pitch, which is very useful and makes a massive difference to a game that would otherwise be completely hopeless.

The massive flaw with the PES10 system, is that in order for it to work, you can only pick just ONE player for the entire game; this is why I regularly talk about how the game could revolve around numerous preset scripts for numerous players, and how all the numerous factors, direction of movement, speed of movement, timing of movement, could all be wrapped into a very simple and responsive control scheme.

But anyways, unlike the PES11 system, with the PES12 system you can choose anyone at any given time. Just a couple of questions if you don't mind.

1st -- When passing the ball you are forced into releasing the right analog stick: how does the off the ball movement work when you release the right analog stick in order to pass the ball?

1st -- Does the selected target automatically continues running towards the given direction? or does the selected target halts his movement and shifts into a stationary stance?

2nd -- Considering the fact that the right analog stick must be released in order to pass the ball; how can you determine when you want the selected target to halt his movement or when you want the selected to continue running into space?

3rd -- How do you select the player that you want to move?

4th -- How do you determine when the selected target starts moving?

5th -- Can you also determine the speed at which the selected target moves through space?

6th -- How close can the selected target get to the ball carrier? Is it possible to position the 2nd player (without the ball) just right besides the ball carrier?

7th -- Does it ever feel responsive or is the whole procedure just unresponsive?

This is how it works.
When you're controlling a player, press the R3 and a desired direction to choose a 2nd player (R3 activates the 2nd player control instead of dribbling moves), then if you selected the manual off the ball feature, you will be able to control 2 players at the same time. The original with the left stick, and the 2nd player with the right. You have full control over the direction with the 2nd player.

Can you also determine the speed at which the selected target moves through space?
The player runs, but I do not know how to stop him. Sometimes he also jogs. It depends on the defender around him.

I think you can, but you ave to set it to manual, because Auto is like the auto run button in fifa. Thing s that it's difficult to do it because the the opposite directions and AI pressure.

Does it ever feel responsive or is the whole procedure just unresponsive?
Somewhere in between. I would like more flow to the overall procedure. But it's a good start.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. Another question: if you have selected your target, when you pass the ball, does the selected target automatically deactivates itself? or does the selected target continues activated even after you pass the ball?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy0KokUGLBI

The given video clip is only 55 seconds long, if you see it, you will notice that the player who scored the goal started running since the beginning of the play, meaning that three passes were completed and yet the player who was running forwards was the same. Is it possible to recreate that goal on PES12?

I mean, can you complete 3 to 4 passes and yet have just ONE selected target for as long as you want? Or does the selected target deactivates itself automatically after each pass is made?

EDIT

Looking back at it, that goal requires two selected targets, the player who made the assist needs to move first, and the player who scored the goal needs to move after.

The only way I can see that goal in PES12, is if before the 1st pass you already set a direction for the selected target (the player who made the assist), and by the 2nd pass, the selected target continues moving towards the given direction automatically; and at the same time, quickly after the 2nd pass you would now be controlling a new selected target (the player who scored the goal), whilst at the same time the 1st selected target continues moving automatically towards the given direction.

It would be great if that type of play can be recreated on PES12.

It is happening again
After my initial harsh first impressions, I played it again last night. Picked Utd vs Milan. First thing I did was try to pass it back to Evra. Now, I tried my hardest to make him move TOWARDS the ball..... but he just stood there and watched it go out of play. Good bloody start!

I just got an overwhelming sence of boredom when I was playing it. I didn't feel that way when I played the 2011 demo. That felt fresh and exciting at first. 2012 feels stale and boring.

That's the thing... it seems to be trying to bring in Fifa fans now. They way the players dribble now is too much like Fifa, and is unrealistic.

My updated impressions:

1. GK's are utterly unacceptably bad. Just conceded a goal from the edge of the area - the shot went through the keepers legs. I mean come on Konami, there are keepers in FIFA 97 better than this. FIX IT

2. Defending is too fiddly. Why can't there just be a standing tackle button? You press it, you tackle. Simples.

The following link * http://kitanamedia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5174 * explains why dribbling past defenders seems to be easier and also why running seems weird.... apparently, running seems to work like a responsive power bar system, where you get to time sudden bursts of speed, and apparently the result is that "explosive" star players are almost unstoppable.

To be honest, I don't know what to think; is the game smarter or dumber?

That's the thing... it seems to be trying to bring in Fifa fans now. They way the players dribble now is too much like Fifa, and is unrealistic.

It was always going to happen, Konami and EA Sports are going for the same type of fans, it was all very clear with PES11 in my opinion. Further indication that the genre needs a third party who can actually produce a serious footy sim.

I just got an overwhelming sence of boredom when I was playing it. I didn't feel that way when I played the 2011 demo. That felt fresh and exciting at first. 2012 feels stale and boring.

I cannot play PES11 because of how boring I find it, so if PES12 is more of the same but even more boring.... Why do you find it more boring? The dribbling is too easy and dumbed down? What makes it stale and boring?

2. Defending is too fiddly. Why can't there just be a standing tackle button? You press it, you tackle. Simples.

Because Konami and EA Sport think that we are retarded, they think that pressing a button in order to execute a standing tackle is just too difficult for their pick up and play fans.

Not to disagree but you can make a standing tackle. However the keepers although appear better, somehow spill more than in 11. I am sure that they will be better in the 2nd demo. The close control also needs to be toned down a bit. But not by much. Why?

Because in reality, defenders can be beaten easily if the defender rushes without thinking ahead. I play 5 a sides and we do not train football, but I can beat soemone who rushes mindless at me easily. So the players can do it if I can.

Defending in this game need to also have more user input too.

BTW, Press R2 and X to jockey and CLOSE SPACES, and use the AI pressure wisely. That's how to defend well. Sometimes you have to take control and make a sliding tackle too.

But overall, the close control needs a bit of toning down, but not by much. Just enough to make a clearer difference between Messi and other fast dribblers and the other dribblers and non dribblers too.

I can see this becoming better in the 2nd demo if we give the proper feedback, or here's hoping again.

Please remember that this is the first demo. In my opinion they shouldn't have released it. Why? Cos the haters will hate even more. FIFA fans won't be impressed and I take it that was a main reason this first demo was released, to draw in people who have left Pro for FIFA.

Konami have already said this demo is way behind the 2nd demo (so why release it?)

Keepers are being worked on.

I'm a 360 owner and was gutted this demo didn't land yesterday. But today after reading some comments I'm glad it didn't. I hated pes11 & 09 and am still playing PES10.

I really want to be impressed by Pes12 and would the first demo do that?

It's the dirt time I've preordered FIFA and evo. I feel dirty for saying it but evo has been a major let down for me in last few releases and I've been a fan since ISS on SNES.

Not everyone is gonna like Pes12 but this demo could make or break pes12 in my opinion.

ok having played a few games i see some problems, here they are....

- Keepers. Terrible, they ruin the demo for me, pushing away easy saves to an open net for an attacker to tap in. They are over dramatic and dive for easy shots pushing them away for a corner. they are better on free kicks however as they actually save them! but overall keepers are shocking, cmon konami fix em!

- Shooting. Still crap imo if you shoot outside the box especially, no-one shoots like that konami! they need to be lower and more accurate, it ruins it when you have good build up play only for a shot to fly 10 yards over the bar :(

- Referees have improved alot, but there is one bug that still gets to me. When a player tackles someone that has already passed the ball and takes him out completely, but play continues with no punishment. It happened in PES 11, 10 and 09 EVERY time, and now it happens in this. think it was 08 when the referee actually pulled you back for it. it needs sorting because the player gets injured for nothing!

thats it really, i really like the player control, but maybe the defending could be improved aswell. I look forward to Demo 2 when hopefully these will be fixed
