I finally got a hold on the WE demo yesterday and kicked the ball around for a couple of matches. I must say that I'm positively "impressed". Impressed is maybe a bit far-fetched - but I'm lacking other words for it. ;o)
I really do like it. It feels a lot more of the old days on the PS2. My biggest gribe though is: I can't help but feel and think that this is the game that Konami should have made back in 2008 or at least last year. In that perspective I can't quite figure out if I think it's worth it this year, because I think, that they still need some (IMO) very fundamental things to give the game some "spark", "drive" and "energy". (It's had to explain - but I'll try...). I like the hardness/difficulty of the game. I find it very hard to tackle compared to FIFA this year. Very challeging and good. Just all in all I find PES more of a challenge this year. I played a couple of games of FIFA afterwards - and I really got amased at how "easy" it suddenly became. I play at the medium difficulty and have semi set on shooting and passing - everything else is on manual. In FIFA I suddenly won EVERY tackle (very much to my own surprise...). Also I kind of started to get the feel of a more "arcady" feel...?! I don't think that FIFA is arcady - but it somehow felt different on me - after I played the WE demo.
But damn - PES still lacks some stuff! The goalkeepers made owngoals and other very unnatural mistakes during my matches. I got the feeling that no matter how good I'll get at this game - I will always be prone to losing - 'cause of bad keeper behavior.
The graphics are good - no doubt. But the fluidness in animations and the fluidness overall in the gameplay just isn't good enough! Here I personally think that FIFA is head and shoulders above. It's just more fluid to play and look at. (That dosen't make it a better game - that's not what I'm saying).
Then there are all the small details that just add up in the end. I personally really-really like the finess shooting in FIFA. Only fault: you score too many goals with it... Also the "trigger a players forward run" is much more responsive and effective in FIFA than in PES/WE. It's better in the WE demo than the PES demo though - thank God!
And finally I can't help but really (and I mean REALLY) miss how you can use your body for batteling/scrambling over the ball in FIFA. It's just so nice to use and look at. And I can't help but feel that it's such a fundamental part of a real football match - that there's no excuse for Konami NOT to have implemented it in their game!!!
And then the fact that the 360 dribble is IMO much better implemented in FIFA than in WE/PES.
But overall I couldn't help but feel (for the first time since the release of last years installments) that I actually found it a tiny bit more enjoyable playing the WE demo than the FIFA ditto... Mainly because I found FIFA a tad "too easy" compared to WE...?!?
Don't if any of the above made sence - but I tried anyhow.. ;o)
Cheers for the opinions Fiore_Fan!
I haven't had a chance to play either demo so I appreciate your views. From speaking to you in the past I know you were impressed with Fifa 09 and we both thought it did a lot of things better than PES 2009.
The fact that you said you really enjoyed the WE demo is great to hear though, cos it sounds like that is very similar to the final code of PES 2010
I've decided to stick with PES this year and I'm really hoping all of the positive things I'm hearing about the WE demo are true.
I know what you mean about the keepers making mistakes. It's so frustrating (In PES 09 anyway) but I think I prefer this to Fifa's unbeatable keepers. In Fifa 09, whenever I cut in from an angle and blasted it as hard as I could, or even tried placing it, the keeper always held it, or pushed it behind for a corner. I found this a bit unrealistic. PES keepers may make stupid mistakes but at least they aren't unbeatable from a certain angle.
