Fifa08, PES2008 comparaison

finally i got myself a ps3, and because PES will be next gen on pc i thought i would buy fifa on the ps3 so here are the unbiased comparaison points:

Graphics:
FIFA
the stadiums look great, although the crowd looks REALLY bad, but the overall environment is very good. Screen adboards, shirt deformation (not perfect but better than PES), on the other hand faces aren't realistic and there are no refs on the pitch which is confusing given the ps3 capabilities.
PES stadiums are really good too, the crowd is a lot better than fifa's but not perfect. Players are a lot better represented as faces are incredibly realistic. Though the lack of licenses for teams, shoes and balls may ruin the experience.

Gameplay
FIFA
I never thought i'd say that but for the first time fifa's gameplay is better. Forget all that non-sense of lag in response as it's only online and it's not that bad ( you have to think faster that's all :p), online play suffers almost no lag. Players animations are great, changing directions is realistic. Trick system is rewarding as it's not easy as it was before. You can see the players touching the ball to set it ready for a pass or a shot not just passing it while it's in a weird position of the foot.
PES gameplay is almost the same as ever but with a few tweaks, gameplay is somewhat slower, passing is faster, well what you'd expect from konami. The thing is they still couldn't get the ABCs right. Players still seem to slide across the pitch and for God sake the collision physics, they should have mastered it already but they manage to surprise me every year with the same old physics collision bugs (not that FIFA doesn't have any bugs). Other than that the game is enjoyable, as the real change in realism for PES this year was graphic wise.

Presentation
FIFA needless to say that fifa was always superior in terms of presentation, one thing i noticed this year was the menus were a bit confusing at first, but as soon as you get used to them they'll be alright.
PES menus are a bit better but the soundtrack is really bad which is funny because instead of improving the soundtrack they added more crappy music.

Overall
well i give FIFA an 8.5 as for PES an 8, i think there is still a long road ahead of both games and lots of room for improvement.

just found out a frustrating bug in fifa08 on the ps3, before playing online it kept asking me to download a squad list before every single game even though i downloaded it before. So i went online and found out that if i changed the player in the arena to someone other than ronaldinho it'll do that. How the hell are these 2 things related? Anyways i switched back to ronaldinho and it played fine. EA releases bugs as much as new games ever year.

complain to them... they 'might' fix it..' might'.....

i agree with the fifa points. the next gen 08 plays much better than last years incomplete one. it looks, feels and plays good. my only complaint is the players look a tiny bit to small.

though i disagree with the PES graphics. i thought only the players looked good. the field still needs improvement in my opinion, and also the crowd and boards.
the gameplay of PES went backward this year. the players run weird and the ball are like glued to their feet. it feels unnatural. Also throughballs work too well and makes the game too easy. Other than that gameplay hasn't changed too much from previous.

presentation you hit the money ball. for Fifa if you have a sd tv crt.. stay away!! it looks awful. or make sure you have a HDTV

Good review, nice to see something constructive instead of all the rants.

Not 100% agreed with FIFA gameplay though. I do agree it's a vast improvement over previous incarnations, but i still find the crossfield passing, and shooting mechanisms a bit to swing happy, especially with the better players. Maybe thats me, i dunno.

On the whole PES 'feels' better, somehow more solid, but then it always has.

On graphics, yes, PES is not next-gen. The crowds are awful. (waiting for the chants of 'are you lego in disguise...')

Presentation is a no-brainer. PES has always been inferior & i couldn't guarentee it'd improve too much even if it did have all the licenses.

Personally i think it's improved defensively on the whole, however, it still has it's moments though, like gaping holes suddenly appearing for you to run through for an easy one-on-one.

Your team AI is definately better. Top strikers hardly get caught offside & make intelligent runs without being forced.

Just my opinion mind, others may not think the same...

That's good, that was the main disappointment of PES6 imo, was that the AI was WAY too easy, hope it can handle my immense style of play :smug:
