First Impressions of WE9 - NO QUESTIONS.

I don't think the game is slower at all. If anything it's quicker. The players react a lot faster and the ball seems to zip around the pitch a lot more.

There are alot of other tweaks as well, I like the way players jostle for position when getting ready to head the ball in midfield. Very realistic, players leaning into each other, sometimes pushing off, getting fouled, etc.

Still, no one can really give any good gameplay impressions after only a few days. You only start to get where Konami is coming from after weeks of play.

I'll be online in a few days. That will be the true test. WE8LE seemed to slow down during online play, if they've cut that out in WE9 then they've done their job.

I like the way you now get random injuries... Yesterday i was playing as Arsenal against Chelsea. The ball went out of play, and all of a sudden there was a cut scene showing Henry limping off the pitch... He was involved in no collisions at all. Im assuming it was a hamstring injury as he was holding he's leg.
I think this is a nice addition which again adds to the realism :)

Finally arrived today. Been playing on it for a little while.

Well for a start I think it is alot harder, I was on 3 star and I found it difficult. Probably just needs some getting used to. The stadiums all look the same as the PES4 ones. Gameplay is alot slower, and hard to get the ball under control most of the time. Crosses seem to be abit more difficult, but corners and freekicks are alot better because you can have as much as you want, whereas of PES4, the power bar went up in 1/3's. Japanese is abit of a bugger, but the English patch makes it a little bit easier to understand whereabouts you are going. The empty crowd during gameplay is something that needs to be sorted out.

It`s more of the same just a few players have better faces Wright-Phillips still not realistic and Robinho My God!!! he is really fake just the face of govou I really expected better graphics but no.....

Let me know how you think about it.

And no nike shoes no real advertisement boards only Arsenal and Chelsea lisenced not even Man United I`m a bit dissapointed about Pro evolution Soccer 5.

I think it's a bit early to be dissapointed about Pes5, it's still months away.

Anyway, keep up the good work, guys, some class pointers there, the random injury thing is brilliant!

well, been playing a few matches this morning, my thoughts.

- instantly you are graced with the speed of the game, which is a little slower than PES4 and even WE8:LE. Even though it is slower, the balls seems to be quicker and smoother in movement, and it's quite hard to get a good run going together unless you're a very good player.

- I adore some of the new animations. Corners are great, whether it's a little tinked short corner or a full cross, which has been changed also. The GK's look better too when throwing, and seem to be a bit more responsive.

- since most of the thing is in japanese (duh) it was hard at first to figure out what is different. I gotta be honest, I haven't scored many goals, maybe 3-4...I have scored a long shot though with Ronaldinho, I used R2 and thundered it into the right hand side of the net, I like that shot don't go exactly in pinpoint positions, like top right, top left etc, a lot more realistic.

- the one thing I loved about FIFA, more than PES was acute finishing you could do when scoring. Like Henry would pass the ball into the net, it's beautiful, I haven't managed to do it myself yet but Drogba scored against me with a lovely chipped pass which came outside the post and then spun in, was quality.

- I've had the pull up of injury like someone mentioned before, Viera done in his hamstring and had to walk off.

So far seems like they've taken the best game of the series, PES4, and improved it. It was never gonna be a full overhaul, that'll come with the new console versions, but so far I'm happy with it, very happy.

I played about 10 games last night, mainly Chelsea vs Liverpool. I'm finding it really hard to break down the defence, for one of the matches I lost 3-0 and this was on 3 stars! In one of the games Kewell controlled the ball brilliantly. The ball was dropping over his left shoulder as he was running down the wing. He controlled the ball with his left foot by jumping then put his body between my defender and the ball. Brilliant, I recorded it on my phone, will post it when I get back home. Later on he was seen hobbling about injured and a few mins later he was subbed, walking off slowly and limping.

I then played a European Championship with England. 4 stars and won 2, drew 1 in the group stage. I then lost in the quarter final 2-1. I almost equalised in the final minute. Rooney flicked the ball on and from about 30 yards, Owen come running parallel to the goal and hit a great half volley. It dipped and bounced and spun onto the inside of the post.

I also saw a great celebration yesterday when I scrored: My player went off to celebrate and the camera cut to one of the stands. You could see the backs of fans heads in front of you while in the background you can see my players celebrating. Brilliant!

another little tidbit I just found.

I was Ronaldinho, using various skills etc against Milan, I then turned him and did the flipflap...and Stam just stood and watched me as a ran away from him...like he was baffled.

Really good to watch Stam just giving up lol.

Another cool thing I had regarding injuries was that I kicked the ball out of play for a throw in because one of my players had gone down injured. He then recieved the necessary treatment but what came next really surprised me,the opposition took the throw in and the player who recieved it booted the ball back to my goalkeeper! Made me wonder what happens if you are faced with this and you choose not to kick the ball out of play.

I disagree with myself now. The game is slower after all, but smoother too.

Some more observations:

Pros:

Dribbling moves. The dribbling is more responsive. You can now sidestep much more easily, just by tapping the D-pad perpendicularly for a half second. Much easier than reaching for the R2 button all the time.

Long shots are in like Flynn. Half of my goals were from well outside the box. Gabriel Heinze even scored a cracker from the CB position. Curve on the shots is much more vicious too, especially outside curve.

Throw in "pump fakes". Nice touch.

No more super thru balls. To score you have to work the box, not just bring it to the midfield and hit triangle to get an easy run on goal.

Cons:

Fouls. Tough, harrying defence gets a whistle almost every time. The refs are cracking down on contact. This is crap because it slows down play. Worse, bookings are actually LESS frequent, so there is no incentive not to play a choppy, hacking pressing style of defence that will turn the game into a free kick competition. I'm sure this will be a problem online where ruthless "power gamers" will take advantage against technically stronger opponents.

Lob thru balls. They fly too fast and too straight making them useless in the offensive half. Try a lob thru ball anywhere near the box and it goes right to the keeper.

its a decent version, too many free kicks and its a bit too slow, maybe just needs getting used to. also, the premiership doesnt seem to have been updated! ive been waiting for years for sunderland to get in the game, and what happens, they leave palace, norwich and southampton in there for some reason, hopefully sorted by pro ev 5 time. overall, good, but not sure if its an improvement.

It will be sorted by PES5, it always is....
Er no. It'll probably be the same. Did you play both WE8 and PES4?

Tough refs is a bit of a problem in WE8:LE too and to counter that we used to play using the most lenient ref. Try using Johann Jansenn if he's in there.

It will be updated in PES5, for sure. Wolves, Leicester and Leeds were in WE8, but were replaced by Norwich, Palace and WBA in PES4. The same will happen this time, so look forward to Wigan, Sunderland and West Ham in PES5.......

Yeah, PES4 had 2004-05 season kits and teams, whereas WE8 had 2003-2004 data. So PES5 should have all the 2005-06 kits and teams.

the game play seems very slow and accurate at the same time...a lot slower then WE8LE, for some reason the game pplay reminds me of ISS 98 on the old PSX :/
