First Impressions of WE9 - NO QUESTIONS.

The Star Player
Yes the computer is a much more challenging opponent even on 3 star you will have an entertaining game. The game is very smooth but all WE games seem to have that flow. I am starting to notice that the players feel alot more real in this from the way there is contact between them the tackling and the actual kicking of the ball feels better.

The footballs available are a range of adidas f50 balls a pelias, and orange one, a plain one and a classic one.

For everyone out there itching to get their hands on PES5 let me tell you you wont be dissapointed as this is a big leap in the series to take to ps3. Still for me the shooting is the best feature

Well at first I thought there was little difference but after about 10 mins you realise the changes which are fairly small make the game 10 times better. There is no time when ive played it and felt 'oh that wouldnt happen in a game' etc it just feels right, aside from full licences they really tick absolutely every box.

When you get it this week pay particular attention to the shooting because you will see how great it is

My first impression was great music!
I love the curl shot aswell! Just after u shoot u press R2 and it will put a realistic amount of curl on the ball, ive not mastered it yet though.

Some things that annoyed me slightly on PES4 have not changed in PES5 from what ive noticed in some of the screen shots.

When a player gets injured during a match, the people who carry the stretcher are all identical!!....

Also if you sub your captain, the player coming on has the armband on already as the captain is walking off!!!.....

Someone also said that when you are at the kit selction screen before a match you can wear e.g. your Home Shirt with away shorts and socks or vice versa to stop shorts clashing colour. I seen a screen shot of the kit selection screen and as far as I can see
, its the same old home or away kits???....Can anyone shed any light on any of what of posted??

Nippon Challenge

I’ve received my WE9 this morning and had about two hours of gameplay solely on the Nippon Challenge and Training.

My first impression is that the game has gone up another notch. The gameplay seems to be getting better and better. The ref looks more confident now. If you are dashing through the flanks, the crowd will cheer you on. The ball physics have improved and the bounce is about right. It is extremely difficult to get a penalty now so it is now much harder to win a game. At the end of each game(Nippon Challenge) there is a newspaper report showing the result and how the players’ react to it. There are a lot of Asian teams now which unfortunately is CPU controlled. However you can interchange the teams between groups. Another thing I have noticed is that my keeper’s jersey sometimes changes color between one game and the next. Wow. Cool.

It is advisable to start off with the tutorial as some of the control buttons have been changed. More emphasis has been placed on the combined R1 and R2 button. There are some new moves too.

Last but not least, you’ll get to know who is the man of the match at the end of each game. You merely have to look for the star.

See the enw 'curve shot' with R2....Whats Beckham like at it, does it swerve as much as his free0kick against Greece :p?

Guys feel free to discuss the game in here but stop with the dumb questions. There is another thread for questions so use that.

Some good impressions here:
eduardtee said:
I've been playing WE9 for a few days now (since Friday) and I'm kinda surprised about it.
I like the game, let that be clear. But I do have the feeling that I have to relearn the game when it comes to dribbling and passing... I think it's more realistic though, but I do have to adjust my playing style. So it'll take a little bit of time before I'm able to play on the level that I've been playing PES4.
So my experiences based on 10/15+ games against another human player (usually AC Milan versus AC Milan) on 5*'s can be found beneath.
I never play ML and only play friendly matches against the computer if I want to practice. I usually play just against my friends, because that's the most fun to me. And usually we play w/ the standard clubs or countries (AC Milan, Brazil, Barcelona, Arsenal, France, Real Madrid). So now you know my background as to what type of usage I get from PES/WE.

So the things I've noticed:

Overall:
+ The balance between dribbling and defending is much better. In PES4 it was too easy to dribble past defenders. Now, it's still possible, but you'll have to anticipate your opponents moves even more!
+ Overall I feel that you have more control over your players. For example: pressuring my opponents backs w/ my 3 forwards is much more useful, intercepting a pass is easier.
+ Defensive AI is a lot better.
+ You can really notice the difference between a good player and a bad player. E,g,: defenders are really slow to turn on the spot, as opposed to e.g. Kaka whos a lot quicker.
+ Offside is implemented so that you'll only be offside if the player touches the ball. A really good implementation in my opinion! This means that you can stop a player in his tracks if you see he is actually offside and use another player to run after the ball!
+ Advantage rule is implemented better than in PES4. Getting a card or seeing an injured player taken off will occur after advantage has not been used. Advantage rule is so much better.
+ Injuries will not only occur after a sliding tackle, but also by straining a muscle after shooting, or after being pushed over w/ an X nudge. Inzaghi is more prone to injuries than he has been before ;)
+ Players don't turn on the spot anymore. There's a bit more delay. You can use this to your advantage in both offensive terms (know that a defender can't turn on the spot) and defensive turns (a player w/ the ball can't immediately go past ya).
- Keepers are not very good. Even Dida has problems w/ shots from outside the box. He'll usually knock 'em corner and not grab the ball w/ two hands.

Running/dribbling:
+ A lot harder then in PES4!!! When you turn 180 degrees, they skid a little bit because they're not able to stop immediately, especially when running w/ R1. So this means that players don't stop the ball immediately when you turn.
+ Using R2 gives you a LOT more control, compared to dribbling w/ out R1 or R2. Big difference means other usage. Default dribbling is a lot harder now (seems as if players make one more step while dribbling).
+ You can't just run, run, run anymore when you have the ball. You have to find a new balance between running w/ R1 and just walking around. The default sidestep w/out R2 helps in this.
+ New controls when receiving the ball w/ R1 or R2. Receiving w/ R1 means knocking the ball forward (as was the case w/ R2 in PES4). Receiving w/ R2 means control (as was the case w/ standard receiving in PES4).
-/+ Some players will have to relearn how to walk/run w/ the ball and how to do tricks. For me this is something which I'll have to relearn. This control system is more consistent w/ the buttons (R1 being really fast running, so also faster acceptance and R2 giving more control).

Passing:
+ More realistic passing. Not every X pass ends up in your players feet. You have to position yourself really well and pay attention to where your opponents are to give a good pass.
+ Through balls w/ Triangle are also a bit faster in my opinion. Use wisely.
- L1 + Triangle passes are hard to use. In PES4 I used it quite often, but in WE9 the passes go way too hard and end up in the keepers hands.
- Triple tap w/ O doesn't work that often anymore :( But I found it too easy in PES4 actually.
- Throwing the ball w/ the goalie isn't that safe anymore. You'll have to watch out w/ throwing the ball because it'll often lead to a throw to a player who's covered by a forward who'll be able to take the ball quite easily.

Heading:
+ Much more control over heading. Using R2 is much more useful.
+ I feel that heading is more precise. I can now control more which way my player will head the ball w/ X.

Shooting:
+ Shooting from outside the box is much easier. You can really blast 'em in the goal if there are no opponents around. In PES4 I almost never shot from outside the box, but because it usually ended up in the scramble or against one of my own players.
+ Lobs (w/ L1) are much better to control. If you only tap it like in PES4 the ball goes really slow and low and definitely in the hands of the keeper. You can use the bar just like a normal shot which means you have to press Square longer.

Free kicks:
+ More as in PES3, perhaps even EASIER than PES3... Way easier then PES4. PES4 was too difficult in my opinion, so tackling somebody and giving up a free kick wasn't that much of a problem. But now you have to be a lot more careful again.
+ New control system (selecting a player w/ R2 and passing to your shooter w/ L1 + X) is a lot better than the controls in PES4.
+ Bar when passing short w/ X. Now your opponent will not know whether you're gonna give a high pass w/ O or just a short pass w/ X.
- When getting a free kick around the midfield, your players will not be standing near the opponents box. They'll hang in between both the box and the midfield. So a O pass for a header isn't really possible. You have to wait longer for them to walk to the box.

Corners:
+/- Same as in PES4 in my opinion. But again the bar is seen when giving a low ball w/ X.

Defending:
+ Best ever controls! I feel like I control the player, as opposed to the control system in PES4. If I'm now running behind somebody, I"ll know that pressing X will lead to a soft tackle/nudge w/ the player falling down and getting a free kick, but w/out a yellow/red card!
- Using X leads too easy to penalties and sometimes makes your player slide tackle. A bit too much perhaps.
-/+ Some players will have to relearn how to defend. Pressing and holding X will lead to a lot of free kicks given which can be frustrating. YOu'll have to learn to walk near your player and only use X when in front of the player. For me it hasn't been much of a problem, but for my friend it has been.

Throw-ins:
- Same bad control system as in PES4. I liked the PES3 system better where you controlled the player in the field and not the thrower.

Graphics:
+ Much more detail in movement. New moves added (e.g. tapping the ball away from a defender w/ the outside of the boot)
+ More detail in player-faces (not that I care or anything).
+/- Better looking menu's, but I could not care less. It's all about the gameplay in my opinion.

Sounds:
+/- Can't really compare it to PES4, since there's Japanese commentary. Sound effects are about the same (haven't noticed any big improvements or anything).

CONCLUSION:
I think Konami have made a lot of differences in the game, especially when it comes down to playing the offensive game. I think it's a BIG improvement (more realistic) over PES4, but this DOES mean that some people will have to relearn the game. The improvements on the defensive end are also huge. So there's a good balance between offense and defense I think.
I can't make a good judgement of course, since I haven't played the game as often as PES4, but for now it seems like a good improvement.
But don't think that you can pick this game up and play on the same level as PES4. You'll to put some time and effort in it, to adjust to the new controls...

WE9 Gameplay Review

Ok, picked up a copy on saturday and lobbed it into the PS2 and viola! No life until work monday morning.

This game is absoloute class, no two ways about it. You are greated with a nice Intro movie and then slick option screens before of course you enter into the gameplay itself and oh how fantastic it is.

the first thing you will notice is how fluid and organic the players feel. Dribbling is no longer easy and you have to really think about what you are doing. Added to the usual, step overs and flip flap from last game, added are the drag back which i quite a cheeky move and a way to hold up possesion and shield the ball. You can also skip challenges, shoulder challenge an opponent off the ball holding R2 and using L2 cut inside which shows a lovely little bit of animation of your player controlling the ball on his outstep. There a are new animations for tackling too, including little steal attempts and full on crunchers, it all feels as what can only be described as 'meaty'. Other new stuff i have seen is the abilitly to bring the ball down using your heel, although it must be implemented to more skillfull players, a mini hop over a running ball to get onto it, a new cheeky back flick, a different variation to the one one WE8LE and various chesting animations. Add to that the new headers and this is one hell of a package. Some of the headers are really beautiful, i scored a fantastic header at Highbury with Henry from a Fabregas cross, Henry nipped in between two defenders while all jumping and flicked it into the top corner.

Shooting has also been improved. I dont know about this middle shoot but now you can control shots better and now players have the ability to curl the ball with their instep. One great example was a goal i scored with Shevchenko. Gilardino put the ball through, across the defender to the edge of the box and Shev got onto the ball and hit a lovely top corner effor with his intep, curling away from the keeper. The shot animations vary greatly and offer up a full array of volleys and finishes. Scoring is also a lot harder as the A.I has been vastly improved making space for chances is tough and requires a bit of nouse, thats not to say that you have to put pass after pass together, but scoing is a real achievement and gives you a great sense of satisfacton.

Goalkeepers were a real bugbear to me on the last version and although theres still a bit of work to do on them they are a lot better and react more quickly. Unfortunately the two handed dive is still there when a one handed one would suffice, but they have added in new animations and the keepers pull off some nice saves and seem to no longer do thos ridiculous two fisted saves at freekicks, where they parry it up in the air. they also have a new throw out where you can launch it to the halfway line for a quick breakaway.

freekicks have improved they are now easier to execute, the referees are more solid and now we have injuries during play not just from tackles. We also have fair play where the ball gets kicked out and returned or a drop ball!

Although the kits are still from last year the ability to mix and match kits is a welcome addition just to add a little bit more realism. 5 new stadiums are added as well as snow, for those European excursions to Kiev or in Serie A. ball pack includes Pelias 2, Finale orange for snow, Finale Blue, F 50 in three colours, classic and plain. Theres also an extra stadium in the shop but i havent the foggiest what it is yet.

I've yet to sample master league but i had a quick bash on the nippon challenge and i tell you Japan are terrible! LOL Although you can arrange friendlies and make the world cup playing sides that arnt playable in the exhibition modes.

Editing has improved, with a lot more kits avaialable and each shirt can be built up in layers to get the desired effect. Players can now have cycling shorts, wristbands, tape and necklaces as well as their shirts out.

All in all im still discovering with this title but its a thoroughly solid title, much much improved on the impressive WE8LE and well worth getting a copy.

My hope is that for October that PES5 has more licenses, rumoured to be German and French League licenses and updated transfers.

9.5/10

I think everything said by eduardtee is spot on, the dribbling with the ball in particular is far more difficult and you have to struggle to create goal scoring opportunities

I don't think the game is slower at all. If anything it's quicker. The players react a lot faster and the ball seems to zip around the pitch a lot more.

There are alot of other tweaks as well, I like the way players jostle for position when getting ready to head the ball in midfield. Very realistic, players leaning into each other, sometimes pushing off, getting fouled, etc.

Still, no one can really give any good gameplay impressions after only a few days. You only start to get where Konami is coming from after weeks of play.

Yeah agree with you there mate. I feels it's too fast too. Ball really zips around and you can make 20-30 yrd ground passes zip all over the place. Just spent a weekend trying out the game, and it still doesnt give me the goosebumps that WE8LE did.

As you said, need to invest a lot of gametime before really deciding if its good or bad.

The positive though, is a lot of new animations and touches put in.

Shooting seems to be for the worse now. I know it was supposed to be made more difficult, but tweaking the shot gauge to fill up quickly is not hte way to go. A lot of the shots seem to be closer to the keeper now, than in WE8LE when i could swear I was aiming for the corners. MAybe its a new technique to get to grips with?. Or maybe now in certain situations you are being forced to use the new R2-shot technique.

Animations for this new shooting can range from sublime to ridiculous. Sublime when you're in the right position/shape and it really looks like your bending one in. Ridiculous when your off position and force the shot, it seems that the animation kicks in for a totally unrealistic shot/kick which is physically impossible.

In my brief time with the game, I say defence needs to be re-learnt. Player positioning are better where inprev versions opponent wingers would always be free on the wings. Now your sidebacks take up wider positions and the DMF's track back better to cover.

Heading is much easier (not better IMO, since I though WE8LE was almost perfect). Hae not yet come to grips with crossing yet, but seems to have more pace, and less height.

The chipped thru ball, is totally f==ked up. Too low, and too pacey and usualy skips far ahead of your player.

Actually all the changes in passing for the better/worse may be directly related to the fact that super-cancel is now auto. Therfore players move 'to' the ball more. Everything feels more fluid. Using tried patternes of passing from past versions may frustate you.

Anyway, add more later as I put in the hours.

Cheers.

i had the game since last thursday and i was not impressed by the openning cutscenes coming tru the tunnel its jst like we8 i guess they are just witing on next gen consoles..Btw on three stars it ie very difficult cause of the game play its just to hard...if u dribble a player there's no guarantee that u will be clear cause most likely the defender bumped u a lil so that breaks momentum..i guess the game play even s the field when one human plays another. i love the editing very deep..thats my review for now...still playing

Why don't you elaborate, Dani?

I find the gameplay fantastic (maybe I'll elaborate myself on this later (edit: done!)), but the options and extras a little lacking.

Edit: I agree with pretty much everything said by eduardtee and antred, but I will add for sounds that I really like how the crowd goes wild in a few new situations, like banging off the post or making a break (even if you're only halfway up the field!). It's awesome to hear them go crazy when you beat one of the last defenders and make a bunch of space :)

All in all, in gameplay terms, the players feel a lot more substantial, and the ball is less 'glued' to attackers' feet. This makes controlling a defender feel a lot more useful. In WE8 I could sometimes guess 100% what my mark would attempt, yet he could still manage to get by me. That doesn't really happen as much in 9. Also the ball bouncing around loose in your box feels a lot more dangerous :) No more easy clearing... if you get it, you better smack it fast, because players can even shoot the ball right out of your feet into the net!

That brings me to one other point about the shooting. The one touch shot is very intelligently implemented in this iteration. What I mean is that when the ball is bouncing around in the box and you hit shoot, instead of getting a shot meter and having your player then try to control it and take a normal shot, only to get it stolen easily and cleared (this happens in WE8 a lot and it's frustrating), he will be far more likely to take a crazy swing at it out of the blue (sans shot meter) or slide toward it to score. I've scored a couple where my player slid straight past defenders to get a foot on it and hammered it in, and this IMO is an awesome change in terms of balance (being inside the box in WE8 is all or nothing; either you have control of the ball, keep it, and score, or you lose the ball and it is easily cleared. In WE9 things feel a lot more chaotic).

As to the high number of fouls, I am still not sure about this. There does seem to be quite a lot, but this might be mitigated over time (as I get better at the game) by the fact that A. free kicks are more dangerous this time around and B. the ball is bouncier / defenders more substantial and therefore it is easier to force your opponent into mistakes without having to play so rough.

Do not ruin this thread. That is a warning.
And for your information, no that is not what it is about at all. Your are in the minority and still crying about their choices of national teams. Shame about your narrow mind.

Not everyone will find this their cup of coffee..one neeeds 2 just look past the graphics its the same damn graphics as we8/pes4..but i realised that the stuff i used to get away with in we8 against my bredrins i cant do again which makes d game much much better. At first it was so hard at 3 stars and i resigned saying that the game is shit but after nine hrs of game play i realisesd that even when i actually play football in real life this is how players and the said ball react . So in my opinion there is no other soccer game more realistic than we9..i can possibly see anothe game having a better physics and AI engine...Konami has done a gr8 job

Well, my impressions is that this game like all the other PES releases before it, is going to be by far the very best in series. I dont own a copy as I dont have chipped PS2, but the jump in gameplay between PES 4 - WE9 is far more pronounced than it was between PES3 - PES4. It is by far much more realistic a game and you have to work much harder to get goals. With PES4, it was possible to score a great and diverse range of goals, but if you were playing 2 player and really wanted to play to win, you went for either the cut-backs in the box or the 1-1 scenarios. Due to the fact it was so easy to score cheap goals in PES4, it rendered much of the more rewarding and interesting gameplay obsolete as far as competitive 2 player matches went. (You just have to witness the cynical boring drivel that is played by the top players in the national leagues to get my point). However with WE9 (soon to be PES5), attempting the spectacular and playing in a varied style is very much back on the cards. You now have almost as much chance of scoring from a scissor kicked volley from a long hopeful cross into box as you do from persevering with passing and dribbling the ball into the box for the lay off 6 yards from the goal. So if you are 2-1 down with 3 mins to go in a vital 'inter-mates' tourney match, why not attempt the 35 yard drive or the long hanging cross to the back post for your winger to volley, as you probably dont have enough time to break through your opponents defense for the route-1 traditional PES4 cut-back!

I am delighted with this as my mates and I used to hold ProEvo tournies which gradually fell apart due to folk getting pissed off with the same two faces relentlessly dribbling and cutting the ball back to score their cynical 'money-goals' and exploiting other weaknesses in the game. When PES5 comes out, I reckon our little tournies will be back on the social calendar.

However, in order to acheive this much more balanced and realistic gameplay, Konami have had to sacrifice an element of gameplay that existed in abundance in PES4. To be successful at PES4, you had to rely heavily on having super fast reflexes and generally thinking on the spot about what you wanted the player to with the ball at his feet. This could often make for fast, furious, and very exciting arcade action. However in WE9, you will find that you have to already have decided upon your next pass, cross, twist or turn, 3-4 moves ahead of the gameplay. This tends to make the gameplay slower, less reflexive, and more calculated. Also it cannot be denied that WE9 feels more sluggish than its predecessors and most folk do get very frustrated when playing this game. (muffled grunting sounds abound).

Before WE9 was out evreyone was saying that it will only have some tweaks there and here ( because of the close arrival of next gen consoles)

Now that the game is out I see many people praise the game and say how much improved the gameplay is.

My conclusion is that WE9 is again the best of the series.
