Does anyone else feel like they have lost control of shooting??
I have been playing my master league for 3 seasons now and feel like I have very little idea where my shots are going!! I used to love blasting shots in from rebounds outside the box but now they seem to go everywhere but the back of the net!! I know the new R2 shot has been brought in, but I like to score a good net buster not a placed goal!! It seems like you really have to think and get your button configuration pressed just to hit the target!!
1 on 1 attempts seem to be different with shots going really wide, maybe I just have to get used to the game but at the moment when I shoot it seems like I have no control over where the ball will end up.

shooting

I agree the shooting at first is a little trickey but I have been playing for a good month or two now and I have no problems shooting I think practice makes perfect.I also think that konami will sharpen the game play for pro eve5 and change a feiw things so we will all have to get used to shooting over again.

Have to say that is a superb post Wadderz, best I have seen in ages.

I have to agree with your review though, the game has improved vastly in the realism department. The way the players now pass, tackle, and shoot is so much more realistic. I have seen a couple more overhead kicks that have been attempted too which is good news. One sublime overhead kick made by the COM, edge of the box, just hit the bar though, and even though it was the COM which pulled it off, I wanted it to go in. If you have ever seen the Trevor Sinclair overhead kick for QPR a while back now, you will know what I am on about.

Finally, I can say the goalkeepers have improved. They are now pulling off some spectacular saves and catching or punching the simple ones. Yes, they still do go balls up sometimes but every Goalkeeper makes mistakes so I guess its not a bad thing as long as it doesn't become too common. I can't forget my favourite new Goalkeeping feature, the new longer distance overarm throws. They are highly accurate and work incredibly when on the break from lets say a corner in which your Goalkeeper has just come and collected the ball.

The new WE/PES is seeing the more physical side of the sport which is top-draw. A more physcial football game is what we need, still light and generous decisions are given but you can go into a tackle all guns blazing now and not be penalised if you get the ball. I remember on PES3 if you did a bad tackle anywhere on the pitch you'd more than likely see a red card. But those days are over now thankfully, and the game flows better. The advantages given by the Referee are much more effective too, sometimes he gives the advantage at the wrong time but you get the free-kick because usually your opponent touches the ball. Also the offside desicions aren't as poor as on previous installments, occasionally you are borderline and the decision will go against you but I guess no-one 'really' knows the offside rule anymore. Whatever happened to being truly proud when you finally explained the offside rule to your girlfriend and she actually understood it. Now we don't even know the offside rule.

The shots are a vast improvement from the last version. With some certain players having the Special Ability to be able to pull off more accurate and powerful shots from outside the areas. This works well too, I recently scored a 40 yarder with Paul Scholes, struck it about 4 yards in front of the halfway-line circle. With power and dip it flew over the head of a scrambling Mark Schwarzer who didn't have a chance.

The Editing Mode has vastly improved and is widely enhanced. Providing all the nifty tools needed to create a more accurate and realistic Emblem for your clubs with a 64x64 grid panel. Konami have blessed us with more Lettering and Number styles to choose from also included in this lot is the Premiership's. A great addition to the game for all us English WE/PES players. As when your playing a League Mode and you choose the Premiership it has a more real-game feel to it especially after you have created those wonderful Emblems/Logos/Sponsors/Kits for all the required teams. I added Wigan, Sunderland, and West Ham United to my game over the three relegated clubs. I must say the Wigan Emblem is by far the hardest thing I have ever edited, but the reward is priceless. Once finished, it looks stunning I admit and it was well worth the time and effort.

You can now Edit the International Kits which is a massive bonus. I have only created the England kits so far but I plan to make many more soon. Now, down to the Boots, there are many Adidas samples to choose from, I can't really remember exactly but I am guessing that there are around 12 to choose from. Although 3 have to be left out, only 9 are available to use at any one time. I can't see why Konami didn't just throw all of them into the one 'pot' to give you a better choice. Yet again Konami have found a way to sneak and slither around these licenses by cheekliy allowing you to create Nike Mercurial Vapors which I will say look pretty much spot on. Also being able to create many more accurate boots such as; Diadora, Asics, Puma, Lottos and Umbro's.

There are more in the Basic Settings for each individual player too. Now you can even choose the way your player runs providing for individuality. There are up to 5 running styles to choose between, anything from a light footed twinkle-toed run like C.Ronaldo to a hard flat footed run like Rooneys. A few more free-kick styles have been added to the game also, 9 run-ups now to pick. The penalty's aren't missed either, Konami have added a few more adding it to 6 I think in total.

Konami have got alot of the stats correct this time round I find. They made a few blunders which have been revised, i.e. Steven Gerrard is now a quality player and a vital part of the Liverpool team. Although I was still a little dissapointed with Frank Lampard's stats, they have improved him but only slightly. He should be as good as Gerrard if not better but he isn't unfortunately but hey, thats why we have Edit Mode, so you can just pop in there and adjust them to your liking.

There are 5 new stadiums that I think have been added, there are 2 that particularly catch my eye. One is called the 'Newlands' and I can't really remember the other one, it has two roofs extending over the stands to the side of the pitch, not behind the goals, but to the side. Just to make that clear to you all so you could maybe name this stadium and help me out. Its definetely an Asian stadium, I am 90% certain its Japanese and was used for the 2002 World Cup. I am just having a wild guess here and calling it the 'Sapporo Stadium' or ' Sapporo Dome'. God knows why but Konami have still kept the 'farmers field' in the series. Why though no-one will know, its nearly impossible to play on, causing you to squint every second and play while your eyes are watering.

All this talk makes me want to play the game, so I am. I may add onto this Review later on depending on how long I play on WE9 for.

true but Lampard aitn actually all that great i mean the majority of his goals last season were from deflected shots or free kicks no???? and he pretty much adds nbo defensive prowess to the game....but het thaqts just my opinion....seen as how im not ENGLISH...

IMO Lampard has blossomed into one of the most complete Midfielders in Europe, if not the world. I think it was 19 or so goals from midfield last season. In real life its not how you score them, just how important they are, and many of these were match winners.

Just like Some CF's scoring 25+ goals a season, and 50% of them are penalties.

How many did Zidane get, Ballack? Now these are also great players.

yes they are great players but ballack doesnt get the recognition he deserves for one simple reason....hes NOT english...its true the majority of these so called great world class players would get found out at the top level look at michael owen thought he was WORLD CLASS.....found out at Real Madrid....aint no shame in that just that he aint THAT good or he wouldnt be at Newcastle....im not hating on english players just think they get too easily hyped????????

Owen managed 16 goals in 26 starts for Real Madrid. How can that be perceived as "getting found out at the top level" ??

He was simply a victim of the politics of Real Madrid, Raul is the big player there, he calls the shots on and off the pitch. If it was a straight choice between Owen and Raul then Luxemburgo was made to choose Raul everytime..forced to do this by the board and president. You could see it so clearly towards the end of the season, the manager wanted to play Owen but had to include Raul aswell..went in with a 4-3-3 which wasn't too bad.

No chance in hell of Owen being over hyped..he's scored goals in every competition he's played in and is still only 26 yrs old.

disagree, Figo is still one of the biggest NAMES in ffotball, let go because he cant hack it........he is an original GALATICO at both Barcelona and Real...so dont see your point end of the day....Real now have Baptista Robinho aswell as Ronaldo and raul Owen didnt have a chance because he isnt as good face it

not impressed

i'm not so sure about we9 it seems far too slow, i've always played a quick pass and move game but now it seems like you have to wait and it takes ages to get a decent shooting position so you pass it back and across and back and across ad infinitum, and a lot of times when you want to sprint you always go straight into a mifielder or defender so again you stop. sometimes the players, when they turn to go past a defender look like they are skating across the ground.. yes there are a lot of improvements in we9 and i think it is a lot more realistic but i think a lot of the fun has out of the game.
i've never liked watching italian football, i'm not about to start playing it..
still pes 4 for me

Owen is as good as any other striker in La Liga..a natural goal scorer with skill and pace, as i said at 26 yrs old he's about to hit his prime..his lack of transfer options was more so unlucky then because he can't hack it..

United already have a host of strikers.
Arsenal couldn't afford him with their new stadium being built.
Liverpool couldn't shift Cisse out in time to get him.

So Newcastle aren't a big team, doesn't mean he won't score plenty in the premiership..

Figo wasn't let go..he wanted to go and Real allowed it, not because he's past it but because of the wages they'd have been paying for a player who'd be on the bench more often than not.

Could argue Figo was the victim of a falling out with Luxemburgo and he was the one that made way for the 4-3-3 formation with Ronald and Owen upfront and Raul in behind them.
They played quite narrow then and kept Gravesen, Beckham and Zidane central.

My first WE9 impressions

I've been playing this game now for a good couple of weeks. And the first thing I noticed was the slower gameplay.

Yes, it has been slowed down but nowhere near as slow as PES3 was. It has now become a lot harder to dribble past defenders. But, I reckon this is a good thing as PES4 was a bit too fast for my liking.

Anyway, dribbling has to be timed to perfection - you can no longer outpace a defender. It has to be done with precise ball control, good positioning and I've noticed the R1 dash must be used in regulation. So no more holding onto R1 and moving your player around the defender. First touch can also be poor in one-on-one situations - I'm hoping this is fixed for PES5.

Additionally, more thought has to go into short passes as attackers can be careless with the ball, to say the least. Again, positioning is vital when it comes to ball retention.

Long passes are generally the same as they were in PES4 and WE8. I find that using the Circle button for long diagonal passes (especially with someone like Beckham) are always pulled off with precision. The L1 and Triangle pass is a lot harder to pull off though. Furthermore, crossing is a lot harder. Only the world's best players can put in decent crosses.

The Triangle through-ball is now virtually non-existent. I've only scored one goal so far where the attacker put the ball in the net after receving an inch perfect pass from a midfielder. A lot of the time though, through-balls are either overhit, underhit or the attacker always has a bad first touch which gives the keeper vital seconds to gather the loose ball.

The L1 and Square lob is now difficult to perform. In PES4 and WE8, the L1 and Square lob, 95% of the time, led to a goal. Now, the attacker always underhits the lob.

I've noticed some of the new tricks in WE9 such as the flip-flap. Very effective move especially in tight situations.

Shooting is a bit hit and miss in WE9. Strikers of the calibre of Crespo, Van Nistelrooy, Owen and Henry all regularly miss guilt-edged chances in the penalty area, which I'm sure is not right. Again. this is a negative and it must be fixed in PES5. Yet, players such as Rooney, Gerrard and Adriano are immense at shooting from outside the penalty area - thanks to the new "Middle shooting" star ability. A brilliant new feature.

The user interface has also been spruced up a bit. There are now a lot more colours in the menus. Almost like the menus in FIFA games. The main menu music is cheesy as hell so nothing different there.

I haven't tried the Master League yet but I'll post my conclusions here when I've familiarised myself with the new Master League development.

Overall, I think WE9 is a great game. Yes, it has its faults but didn't every other PES game also have its faults? And I'm not sure what the OPS2 and PSM2 magazines were going on about. They mentioned something about there being a big adjustment to the gameplay in WE9 and PES5 because I honestly haven't had any trouble adjusting.

I would say that the adjusting process is pretty much the same as it was for PES1, PES2, PES3, PES4, WE6, WE7, etc.

I'm a very experienced PES/WE player and I realise that the best thrills in this game are yet to come. The guys who say they're not impressed by We9 are in denial or are "secret" FIFA fans.

surely theres no doubt tht owen is a world class striker. he went to spain n still managed to find goal scoring form in such a short time there. i believe tht he will b newcastles most important player this season. he also garuntees goals!

Master League player development - my impressions

I'm about halfway through my first Master League season and the first thing I noticed is that the entire player development system has been slowed down.

In PES4 and WE8, you could get someone like Rooney to develop Dribble Accuracy 90+ and Shot Technique 99 all in one season's development. Now, it's impossible for any player to improve their stats that quickly. This is definitely a positive as players in real life usually develop steadily over 4 or 5 seasons.

They are now varying styles of ability curves. Some players such as Veron, Kleberson and Ronaldo (Real Madrid) have curves that go up for a couple of years and then go down for two years before going back up again. This is obviously to make up for these particular players' measly performances at some point in their careers (Veron and Kleberson at Man Utd, Ronaldo during his injury years).

Players in their late 20's can now carry on developing into quality players. This is another welcome addition.

Top Speed, Response and Jump now increase in the same regularity as other stats such as Dribble Accuracy and Shot Accuracy. In PES4, Top Speed, Response and Jump only went up after every 100 Master League games! Which I thought was very unreasonable. So this, obviously, is another welcome addition to the WE9 Master League player development.

There are still some negatives with the new Master League player development though. For instance, attributes such as Consistency, Condition, Aggression, Agility and Mentality still don't increase after playing matches in the Master League. I was hoping this would be eradicated in PES5 but it doesn't look as though it's going to happen as the problem is already in WE9 as well as PES4/WE8.

I could post in a lot more detail. That’s if anyone wants the extra details, that is.
