Mafia 2

Yeah I'm glad we agree about GTA IV Hunter. It was a good game and worthy of some praise but all the 10/10 scores made me think it was going to be immense! I actually much preferred GTA San Andreas.

The original Mafia game is probably my favourite game ever! I enjoyed it far more than I've enjoyed any of the GTA games.

I've just read the Eurogamer review.... the guy gave Mafia 2 a 4/10!!! :shocking:

Having played the demo I can safely say there's no way it deserves a score that low. I think your right about taking reviews with a large pinch of salt! The reviewer seems to just be slating the game because it's not the same as GTA. That's the whole point!! Mafia is a story driven game that immerses the player in the storyline, where as GTA is far more about the world and side missions. The whole review just made me really angry cos the guy also criticised the first game and I still think the original Mafia pees all over GTA IV! He seemed to be criticising Mafia for being different to GTA but that was the exact reason why the first game was so enjoyable!!!

Overall though I'm still disappointed by the demo and reviews. I've been waiting for this sequel for years and it doesn't look like it's going to quite live up to the first game. I'll wait and see though.

Forget about taking Eurogamer's review with a pinch of salt. I wouldn't take it with a boat load!! I've just searched for their review of the original Mafia game on the PC:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/r_mafia

Guess what? They gave that a 4/10 as well!! That game was friggin amazing and gave me hours of joy and they gave it a 4/10!?!

They must have something against 2k or against Mafia games in general?

If Eurogamer rated the original Mafia as a four out of ten then they can go *beep* themselves. It was a cracking game. One of my favorite games.

I haven't tried the Maifa II demo. I watched a friend going through the motions on it and that failed to inspire. Whether that was this friends unfamiliarity with the controls thus resulting in dire shoot-outs and abysmal car handling, or simply the game mechanics, it left me a little disillusioned. Maybe I'll get around to trying it for myself, maybe.

Received my copy of Xbox World 360 in the post today. 83% was the score. They praise the story, the set pieces the shooting/cover system and say the driving mechanic has improved, but think the linear story in what is effectively a sandbox environment is a problem and there are some poorly planned checkpoints/save points during missions.

Overall they say if you can look past some of the technical flaws and the linearity of the story, then it's a "cracking" sequel.

 Might go with the general consensus & wait for it to get a bit cheaper.

Just bought this off ebay for £28 with the DLC codes still unused. I'll play it, finish it, then trade it in towards Fifa 11.

Played it for about 2 and half hours today and loving it. Driving round new york in the snow at night is brilliant, it's just a shame that there isnt a fat lot to do in the world.

I visited loads of landmarks, but you cant do anything. I thought maybe you'd be able to take a life up to the top of the empire state building. No dice. The world just looks pretty, but it lacks any real substance unfortunately =[

The presentation though is the dogs bollocks. Great to look at, brilliant story so far and the music is awesome. However, my biggest fear is that this is going to be over far to quickly.

Oh and I had no idea the first part drops you into Sicily in the middle of World War 2. That took me by surprise and even though you only played through for 5/10 minutes, it was great.

I have to agree with Jonno on everything he said.

I really do like the storyline..

when vito goes to jail i was thinking uh-oh. Its going to ruin the story but it actually added soo much and was quite well done.

Ive got quite far in the story now (chapter 14 or 15) and i think they're trying to create too many 'twists' in the plot and its sort of ruining it for me. Hopefully the ending is awesome though

Another thing that annoys me is how crap the AI of the cops is until you get to 4 stars then they can kill you in two shots from miles away. Fookin annoying.

Ive played for about 10 hours and im coming to the end of the story. I really dont think there will be too much to do after which is rather dissapointing.

Overall i'd give the game 8/10.

Car chases occur when you've got a high enough star rating. 1 or 2 *'s is rather easy to escape from, as soon as you go round a corner they start to lose you.

Just finished the game. Was pretty good tbh. The storyline was good. If your going for achievo's or 100% dont start the last mission as you cant play after that.

Another thing that did grate on me was the lack of checkpoints during the last few missions. These missions are longer than others and theres no checkpoints for a good while in each one. This meant i had to keep re-do missions from the start even though i had done over half the mission. Pretty annoying really.

But overall it was a good game and im already thinking about starting it again.

Just finished the main story. The second half of the game really kicks it up a notch, with some extremely memorable set pieces and shoot outs. Appswah, I found the checkpoints were spread out quite well in most missions. For some reason, I did find myself dying quite a few times in the
dock shootout, (once you'd gone into the warehouse and the guy was lobbing molotovs at you)
The story was brilliant throughout and you actually cared for the characters. Definitely the 2nd best game i've played all year so far (after Red Dead).

Just started the "Betrayal of Jimmy" DLC. This is more like GTA than the main game, with you having to drive to people round the map for arcade style missions. quite good so far.

edit - Need to get myself a copy of the orchestral score as well. It's immense and one of the best i've heard.

Yeh jonno thats mission i was getting pissed off about. Everytime i died you have to start again outside. :/

Currently trying to find the 'wanted' posters. Found about 55/159. Going to take ages!

Then its onto the playboy magazines :)

Edit:

lol! i went down to the docks to mess about and get in fights and you can push people into the sea.

Tbh, I never encountered a single wanted poster. Need to go back and have a look for them.

I love games that allow you to exploit invisible walls and glitch through them. On the west of the map where there are wooden gates blocking access to the countryside, there is one place where you can park a large truck, climb on top and then glitch over to the otherside of the fences that block access to a good chunk of the map. Exploring this area you find a large unfinished mansion (which has been identified as Franck Vincis - I bet this will be utilised in future DLC) a showjumping area and a couple of benches and 4 pedestrians overlooking a really picturesque cliff.

I took joey with me and unfortunately while trying to explore any further we fell into the underworld hell of white clouds and blue sky and i had to reset the game lol.

Checking forums to find out if there are any other such exploits =]

I started the game again on hard instead of medium to get the achievement for completing it on hard at the same time as collecting all the playboys. Its probably because i know what to do, where to go but it seems alot easier for some reason even though i upped the difficulty.

Currently on about 37/50 play boys.

DLC is out on Xbox aswell (not sure about ps3) 800ms points

Edit 2:

Just complete 100% of everything :) Including gamerscore. First time since San Andreas have i completed everything to 100%.

Now onto the DLC :)
