If you're getting burned on the counter attack, I would change my strategy up a little. I would tell my defenders to play deep and also not to play the offside trap at all if possible. Change your SBs to CBs and make them play against the sidelines, so they stay back and cover the wings well.

Also you can try to play with 2 DMFs... maybe like a 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 type of attack, or 4 - 2 - 2 - 2...

The 2 DMFs would clog up the middle area and the SBs that are now converted to CBs will guard the sidelines.

So to recap:
1. Try this formation: 4 CBs - 2 DMFs - 2 SMFs - 2 Strikers... feel free to experiment with the 2 SMFs / 2 Strikers, but keep the 4 CBs / 2 DMFs part intact.
2. Change your SBs to CBs by editing the formation
3. Tell the SBs (who are now CBs) to play close to the line by clicking on each one and pointing the arrow to the sidelines
4. Change your strategy so your CBs play as far back as possible (defending)
5. Change your offside trap strategy to not run the offside trap at all if possible

DISCLAIMER: I don't play with Barca, so I don't know how well this formation fits their personal but I think its a good formation to combat a fast counter attacking team.

I would use Messi on the wing and use him to either send crosses in or cut inside towards the middle and cause havock. I would try to run as much of your attack through him, but don't be afraid to switch to the other side if he starts shutting you down.

Let me know if you have any questions assuming you give this a whirl.

Whatever formation/strategy you decide to go with, practice with it a lot and have confidence in it when you play this weekend... stick with it and it will pay off I think... don't switch it up during the tournament.. I think that would cause problems.

Good luck!

I am excited! I am trying this tactics right now!!!!!!!!
I will let you know in a couple of hours!
Thanks a lot !

As a Manchester United player, it is easy to counter attack against 4-3-3 formation teams. That is why I win 90% of Barsa players online :)
challenge me USA players! my id is 'HuJubMoo'

paul there are several ways to play against 4-3-3 ,counter attack and several schools of thought ,on how to counter to it ,regardless of player ability

most ppl will tell you to sit deep so they cant do it to you ,personally i play 3-5-2 against it with both A backlines and offside ,the reason i play like this is because if you sit too deep ,you can become penned into your own half

your 3 in the middle of midfeild will boss the game and the wingbacks when in possesion of the ball is always in between their fullbacks and WF giving you space to run down the line ,its important not to use "other player pressure" as this pulls players out of posistion ,downside is you wont be able to play the ball across your back 3 as they forewards will be their sniffing around ,so always look for your DM who will have loads of space and time to look and pick a pass

p.s. never attack with your DM as this player is key to your defensive shape ,stick to long range shots with this player

Paultrickle,

How are your stick skills compared to his.. are you guys about even? All the strategy in the world is not going to help much if he has superior stick skills... Are you perhaps better at set pieces than he is... corners and such? ... Always try to play with your strengths..

My friend:
I tried this formation and strategy against CPU. What I see is that Puyol leaves his position and goes directly to the midfield. I set to zone marking and not man marking. Any ideas why Puyol is doing that? Maybe a bug?
Regards

I tried this strategy and I do have a couple of questions:
1-How do you set the DMFs attack arrows? Do you leave them in the middle?
2-How do you set up the same for the CBs?
3-I selected zone marking instead of man marking. Is this correct?
Looking forward to listening from you

I am going to try this tonite agains cpu. I agree that are 2 diff schools regarding how to control the cunter attacks. However, playing with 3 defenders, how do you avoid the attacks from the lines with fast wings like Rooney or Tevez?
Thanks!

Yes, we are even. In 4 years he is 4 games ahead of me. We played more than 300 games. He is not superior in skills, but he found this week the way to defend and counter attack with rooney and Tevez.

I am better at free kicks and attacking from the sides. I have a posesion % of 60, I have more shots to the goal, etc, etc. But at the end of the day, he wins, and this is what it matters.....

1. I leave the DMFs alone
2. The CBs that were converted from SBs I set arrows to point to the sidelines... maybe even move them closer to the sideliens a bit.. my goal is to keep them close to the back and on the side to guard those counters on the wings.
3. Yeah zone marking, I don't bother with man marking.. I think if my opponent switches sides or what not it can create issues.

Ok, so it sounds like some strategy would make the big difference.

Can you tell us what formation he uses and where he puts his players? That would help big time.

its easy when you have confidence in the formation and how it works ,like i mentioned above dont press square for player pressure ,and use your midfeild to defend leaving your CB to hold posistion with your midfeild preferably your CM to hussle the player with the ball this will always leave your DM as a precaution if he beats your CM and also stops balls been played into the centre foreward when you play like this your middle is always solid which half nullifys their attack

and because your set up like this when they play the ball down the line and your CB are in posistion with a high back line ,you can quickly get to them with a CB even if you cant tackle him straight away ,just hold your posistion with your CB showing him down the line blocking off any potential in feild passes ,any delay in trying to get passed you allows your DM and the rest of the midfeild to get back once you do ,you use any of your midfeilders to jockey or tackle their player leaving your CB in posistion

never commit yourself to tackle unless your 100% certain you will take the ball even and use WB with pace

He uses the default formation of Manchester United. 4-4-2 with a very crowded midfield.
He defends all the time, then sends the ball to Park Ji Sung in the midfield and using the triangle button, sends deep passes to Tevez and Rooney. They are faster than Puyol, Marquez and Abidal, so he finishes in a 1-on-1 situation with my GoalKeeper.
He plays all the time with the same stratetegy (triangle button to midfielders and then to Rooney and Tevez with the same button)

Simple.. You have to play with his Psychology.. Play the stile of the game, which will not suit to him.. Play deep, Pass the balls in defence, don´t rush anywhere.. Talk and play like normaly.. If he will start complain about it, then play like that for one more min and then one attack.. And deffence again.. :) Play diamond 4 4 2.. Two attackers (Messi and Eto) Henry in mid on SS.. It works, but you must be good in Possession.. If you will be psychologicly weeker, than every match will make him stronger.. (In tennis it is comperable with situation between NADAL and FEDERER)

Thanks for the advice. As a matter of fact, I am mentally stronger than him. But now, he found this "strategy" and his mentallity is huge.
I am a tennis player, fan of Rafa Nadal, and I know exactly what you mean. The problem is that I do not like the way of playing that you suggest. This is play for winning and I like play for enjoying. But at the end of the day, If I want to beat him and his Manchester United team, I do have to change my game style.

he plays counterattack. He sends the ball quick (using the triangle button) to Tevez or Ronney during counter attacks and finish scoring

I tried everything. I have been playing WE and PES since 2002 and this is the first time I feel frustrated. The Manchester United players are strong and fast.

Any suggestions?

ok well if you really want to wind him up try this...

use liverpool...4-5-1 reina, carragher and agger in the middle, with abeloa and dossena as full backs. alonso mascherano holding gerrard just behind torres and babel and benayoun on wings....set tactics so backline doesnt push to far a big trick defending not many people know about (on ps3) is holding r2 whilst an attacker is running at a defender the defender will jocky back and if done correct using x will make an easy tackle (liek booby moore on pele) and come away with the ball use gerrard to run the midfiled and feel free to shoot with him or use his passing ability to set up torres always works againt my bro who is very handy with utd.

Let me see if I got that right.
1) Formation 4-5-1 B5. please see the diagram below
2) What type of defense system do you suggest?
