PES 2008 The Verdict: Hit or Miss?

I have been playing online but the lag I have been getting is atrocious with pings hitting the 2000+ range. I know it aint my PC as its nowhere near THAT bad even if its not top of the range. I played a guy online who was an hour up the road from me and we still got extreme lag. Someting somewhere is very badly screwed up on the konami network and needs fixing ASAP.

I used my ML as an example of how it can be done, it just needs to be lag free to play that style properly online. You cant very well position yourself properly when players and the ball are teleporting around.

Oh my rig btw ; AMD X2 4000 65w / Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 v2 / 2x1gb Corsair DDR2 667 / 7900GS 256mb PCI-E (oc'ed) / 200gb SATA 300HDD

Easily enough to run PES 08 at full with no slowdowns.

1 player game is a totally different thing to two player game.

If you took the game serioulsy (as many people do) then I would advise NEVER playing one player as you will get into habits and gameplay patterns that will simply not reap you much rewards and leave yourself open to being punished big time in any competitive 2 player match.

Likewise.....I have known guys who were really good (for want of a better expression) at the two player game not being so great at the 1 player V CPU mode as the CPU tends to cheat its way about the park in different ways from what a human opponent would.

No you are the one who doesnt seem to get it. I have played konami footy since the ISS days on snes and every version since. I learned to play the game VS humans playing my m8's in tournaments, about 8 of us in 1v1 at anyone time, and I have played online for years. I ALREADY KNOW what the majority of people do to play and win, it takes something rather special to surprise me, as I am the one from my group of friends that uses all the dribbling tricks and passing moves.

All this game requires to win is to adapt my style again to the new flow of the game, and as I said when you set your team out correctly you can beat anyone in a fair match. Single player VS the AI is good to sharpen your skills, only people with no imagination fall in to the same routines. You need attacking flair, and the ability to think on the hoof and if necesary how to play dirty.

Just because I'm a new member here does not mean I am a noob.

In my opinion, this version (PS3) is better than PES6 and better (on the pitch) than FIFA 08. So even with all its faults (which there are many) it is the best football game to date. So by default, for me, its a hit.

But why Konami, EA or anyone else can't produce something a bit better than this is disapointing. Saying that though, its unlikely that any other game, will manage to displace PES08 from my PS3 for a year.

(I've just signed Walcott on a free, oh yes!)

Now let me ask you a general knowledge question. What other video game series has had its very own "Save this Video Game" website?

PRO Players/ PESfans U means like the UK and EURO #1, Rob McLean and #2 Mark Gardiner? Well, both these guys dislike the game. Rob says that he prefers FIFA08 this year but will stick with PES for just one more year (cos he earns money doing so) and Mark Gardiner criticises the game for the ease of dribbling right through and scoring with ease.

The fact that more people have voted hit than miss proves the disparity in the general populace between people with taste and sophistaction and mainstream brain dead easily amused morons.

i think people can't say the truth about how bad pes is, is because pes has amused us for so long, and was great since the ps1 with its unique and realistic gameplay, and now they ran out of ideas. It's like having a very beautiful wife, but as she getting old you'd still love her, you won't tell her how old she's become.

thats just a ridiculous comment. its a miss because the online play is awful. its got far too much lag on all platforms, no 2 vs 2, which is crazy considering fifa are introducing 5 vs 5 matches.

the keepers are rubbish again, they parry way to many shots back into the box. its as if every keeper on the game is a virtual paul robinson.

the fatigue system is laughabe. frank lampard tired after 1 match?! the man has played almost every game for chelsea for the last 3 years!!!!

i think the tackling has also got worse, opposition players seem to be able to run through your defenders with ease, but maybe thats just because i'm not used to it yet.

there is virtually no improvement from last years version. i cannot for the life of me think of how this version was worth another £40 of my money.

and dont go and say that people who care about the game and are passionate about it, who are disapointed with this years instalement are "weekend players" or "fifa fans" considering many of them have been members of this forum for many years now clearly showing that they are not the mugs you make out

you like it, thats great, i'm happy for you, we all are. but that doesnt give you the right to try and insult people who dont like it.

in my oppinion, and many other pes players who have been playing the game for years now think the game is a huge let down. how does that make us "weekend players" or "fifa fans"? the fact many of us are so dissapointed with the game shows how much people care about it.

I mean you may still not like it, but would you still buy it if you hadnt already? Or rather would you be so pissed about it, and instead a just a little peeved on what they missed out/forgot/removed?

Im pretty sure that I for one will be playing quiet a bit online with this once the problems are sorted. Is the game imo worth the cash I spent, am I disapointed, would I buy FIFA instead ? Answer; Yes, Yes, NOOOOOOOOO! In that order. Sure there are niggles and flaws but its still PES and the essential gameplay we all crave is still there IF you dont use teams like Barca , which I never really do anyway unless pressed in to it.

If the lag issues were fixed...that wouldnt stop the 2 player game being lame and not that enjoyable.

After a bad start with a profile I have now ditched (too many disconnects as a result of lag, teleporting sprites and general disgust with the game), I have developed a method/strategy of playing the game with AC Milan whereby I am very very hard to score against using the tried and tested lame methods and am always likely to get goals when I get forward.

Therefore my win rate is something around 78% last time I looked. However, I am now away to play the single player game as playing the way I must play in order to be succesful in the multiplayer game...BORES THE FUCKING CRAP OUT OF ME.... and a lot of the time I just cant be bothered with it. Even though I usually win and I do enjoy really really frustrating and beating some fucking uber-lame dribbling queen online.....take those elements away and it is just not that much fun.......Of course, I could just play with a more interesting strategy/formation and end up losing the plot as some little arsehole dribbles 5 goals past my defense, my goalie, and into the back of my net....... WHICH DONT SOUND LIKE A WHOLE LOT OF FUN TO ME EITHER.

Bottom line is that the 2 player game is fucked. Which is no different from every other PES ever since shitty PES4 introduced the infamous cut-back to the game. but this time, it is more fucked than ever before.

I had 2 cracking games online last night with a player named hoopey (celtic fan same as me)First game we both went Celtic. 2nd game he went Celtic and I went a spanish side of comperable stats. Neither team has uber players, rather they have good players that can pass the ball well and play some good football. First game I won second game he won. When you cut out the top-end teams like barca,AC etc you can have fantastic games of footy much better than any of the previous titles.

If a player has used a top-end team in the last 5 matches I simply refuse to play them. Its not worth my time getting worked up over that they have no real skill and resort to rather fascile tactics. ANYONE with real skills at PES doesnt need the top class players to win, and a fair match can be had quiet easily. If you are then defeated its down to skill of the player, and you can at least take comfort in knowing this.

I dont see what your beef is with PES4, as I found that to be a cracking title. PES 5 however was atrocious for tackling and referee's, PES 6 improved on it a little but was still to over the top and passing wasnt as fluid. With this 08 version, I find that my passing moves really do pay off well and the over all gameplay to be far superior to 4, 5 & 6 . With the exception of the over the top dribbling skills, which I agree with you on, I feel the game is great and well worth the money I paid.

So, you could say.. "youre gonna enjoy PES2008, but beware of choosing the good teams or players, they only make the game ugly"?? thats retard... it show preety well how UNBALANCED this game is, apart from bad coded, cheating AI and another shameful lazy mistakes.
