Replace J. Champion by someone who actually KNOWS soccer?

I simply turned the sound level of the commentating dynamic duo to zero. They just remind me a tad too much about Waldorf & Statler from the Muppets.

While Lawrenson shows some sense of nuance at times, Champion just has to keep bickering about everything. Every shot that doesn´t lead to a goal is "a waste of effort", every time the opposition shoots (even when it´s off target) he keeps preaching how the defence gave too much room, when my team draws against FC Barcelona he gives crap like "we shouldn´t be struggling against teams like that and the manager knows that".

In the next editions I would suggest to get rid of him or transform him into someone who´s more knowledgeable about soccer. As for now he´s just a cynical, oversaturated old hag.

When are all you n00000bs going to realise that it is not the commentators themselves that make the commentary shite in PES but the programmers with their minimalistic approach to implementing scripts and tying them in with specifc game events.

Sorry, but you really are demonstrating your stupidity here to great effect...n00000000000b

Oh my God....who´s actually more stupid here? Of course I realize it´s not a real person giving life comments during the game. My whole plea was about implementing a more indepth comment during the game and not just a negative review because you missed a goal or a team had a chance to shoot against you.

You seem a bit deluded from reality, pal. Take a break from your computer and try being a nOOOOOOOb again. I´m sure it´ll refresh your pattern of thinking.

Then don't blame the voice actors for poor implementation of thier voices. No matter whose voice Konami used for thier commentary....it would be utter shit. If Konami got FIFA's commentators, it would still be utter shit just as if Champion and Lawrenson went to FIFA, their commentary would be very good.

Too many n0000000000bs around here.

I give up. Your inability to see the point in a text in combination with your fixation about newbies makes any discussion with you pointless. Also I didn´t realize the extent of your affection for the voice actors. Sad little man you are.

I see MatTheCat's point.

It's not Champion's/Lawro's fault they say stuff in game at points when they really shouldn't.

It doesn't stop Champion and Lawro being awful though.

I don't mind Champion (although i'd like someone better) but Lawrenson is so wooden. He doesn't "act" like he's at a real game he just reading lines on a script.

Of course you can´t blame the commentating duo. My point is that their voices are used in a rather poor combination with what´s actually going on during the gameplay.

The programming doesn´t seem to be a able to make a better distinction in what is a nearly missed chance or when a shot blatantly misses it´s target. It could also go the other way...sometimes I really miss the target but the opposing goalkeeper catches the ball anyway after which Champion comments "oh, that was a chance there". While it really wasn´t a chance at all.

I´m sure that the real Champion wouldn´t always be happy with the quality of the comment. It´s basically the same problem that occurs with the rating system. You can really get a good score by making several interceptions during a game, even though those interceptions didn´t create any danger at all. On the other hand, if you created several chances to score, with lots of near misses and eventually able to strike once...you can end up up with a rating of only 6.0 and a lower shot ratio.

I realize that the commenting isn´t part of the core of the game. But the way it is now doens´t really add to the fun of the game and I find it much easier to focus without listening to the commentating as it often doesn´t seem to "capture" the spirit of the game.

Of course you can´t blame the commentating duo. .

But you just did. You said get rid of them, as though the piss poor commentary were their fault.

I dont listen to them anyway,

Ich hoere die deutsche Kommentatoren Hansi Kuepper und Wolf Fuss zu. Aber, man kann ueber deutsche PES forum suchen and see that all the little German n00bs blame that particular duo for the poor standard of commentary again, as though it were actually there fault.

It seems that due to the general stupidity of many people, agreeing to accept a commnetary job for the PES games is a terrible PR move for any sports pundit/commentator.

i agree. this is because mark lawrenson's job at the bbc is to sit in a nice cushy studio havin a cup of tea with his mate linekear and quietly chat over the days games with a rich tea or maybe even a jammy dodger

meanwhile at konami HQ
SEABASS: "ALRIGHT LADS, word on the street is that pro evo 6's commentators were TERRIBLE. sack the sound guy. guys we are going to revolutionise commentary from the ground up. we are going to use a unique new engine called teamcommentaryvision, we are going to have TWO new commentators. here is that list of new features in full:
+ 1 new commentator
+ 1 new commentator

now all we need to do is find two people that once spoke about football on tv. somebody get my laptop, we're going googling..."

this is actually how it transpired, i was there listening in from an air vent i'd snuck into

That sounds about right. I knew Lawrenson wouldn't be a good choice when I heard he was going to be co-commentator in PES2008 when I re-installed FIFA2000 (I think) to find out how he was in that. Still I was hoping with a better script and it being 8 years on he'd be better but he wasn't. Chris Waddle on one of the other FIFA games was even worse, lol.

The best commentary i've heard in a game (bearing in mind i've never played a FIFA game since FIFA2002) was Barry Davies in Actua Soccer 1,2 & 3. Felt like he was commentating on a proper match even though it was limited by the fact they came out in 1996/97.

NEW Commentators

The commentry has been poor for FAR to long. I think now our expectations have also been raised along with the move to next gen gaming. In my opinion, I have never liked Martin Lawrenson and John Champion is average. For me there are more commentators they could get...although Im not advocating Jonathan Pierce for the job. I think the commentators voices dont suite the game (strange as that may sound).

I would prefer Martin Tyler and Andy Grey...simply because whenever there is a BIG premier league game on tv (SKYSPORTS in the UK), i associate the occassion with the level of commentry i am going to get...and on tv those two are pretty good.
So i think the game needs good commentators. Sticking Martin Lawrenson is just wrong.

Think about it...commentators work as a duo. 1 guy is an announcer (calls names, gives general information) the other guy is more of an analyst (giving his views and also a bit of history). Now when you pair the PES commentators together, you mess everything up because Lawrensons analysis is shocking and Champion cannot keep up when the pace of the game is as rapid as it is.

They need to change those two because now the perception fans have with the games commentry is its shyt! And as soon we hear those guys voices in the next game...we will already expect rubbish.

So Konami please:
1. Change the commentry team
2. Change the commentry scripts. (Remove biased analysis which critisizes human players for not making substitutions)
3. Create an aspect of the code that actually analyses the game based on the stats. eg. if the persons possession stat is high after 15min, perhaps a comment from the second commentator on how the team is keeping the ball is appropriate.

This will help bring the games commentry closer to what is actually happening.

yes i agree , with 1 , 2 and maybe 3 after the 25 or 30 minutes would be better

yes the commentator are very very poor in my opinion

mark lawro and jon champion = rejects to be honest

i would love gerry armstrong and maybe another good one

also the ITV commentators are the greatest , jim beglin and clive tydsley and peter drury also is a legend

I would ITV commentators, for me the best partnership is the sky sports team onf andy gray and martin tyler.

I would love to see Peter Brackley back. But in all honesty, its the script that needs improving on.

I certainly don't agree with you that Lawrenson and Champion are bad commentators. Do you ever listen to them in real life? They are two top class commentators. What the real problem is the script that they are given to read from. They aren't given the best lines to read and so it comes out with commentry that sounds jilted and doesn't always run together smoothly as you get comments that really don't alway fit with the situation being spoken. Now, I am up for the addition of other commentators to join the team but not to replace Lawrenson and Champion. I think it would be better to get recordings of real commentry that they give on a game and use that instead, just free them up and play them a game and let them commentate on it to give the game a more natural flow to it. I think some stats analysis would be good, certainly in older versions of PES Brackley and Brooking would talk about possesion and creating chances etc. which reflects reality and was a nice little touch so that coming back would be good but to ask for Sky Sports commentators would be a bad move. If you want to listen to them go play FIFA!

Well to be honest I think that keeping Lawrenson and Champion in the game would be a good idea. In real life they are good commentators and analysists. I think that its more to do with the scripts that they are given to read which let the game down. Its also a case of getting to be more relaxed at recording on your own. It is a very unnatural situation for a football commentator to sit in a recording studio and read a script instead of sitting infront of a live game. Lawrenson did sound more relaxed this year than he was last year and they did improve the variety of what was said and when but it still didn't seem as good as it could be. Now, to be honest I would like the two commentators to be kept but allow them to be free to commentate as they would do in real life. Perhaps use real life commentry from them or give them a live match to commentate on or something like that...

This is a really terrible comment. Do you know that Lawrenson is an analyist for live radio? He is really good doing live commentry for BBC Radio 5live. What your saying here is really rediculous. Now, I think that a change of commentators was good for PES 2008. Having Brooking and Brackley for another year would maybe not be so great a change is good in that respect. Now, I do think that they could improve the script they read from or allow them to just commentate naturally on a real game. I am sure they are able to do that and produce more appropriate comments and a more dynamic commentry.

Lawrenson is a bad actor, that's why he should be replaced. Yes he's a decent analyst on the radio and TV but he can't read from a script and can't act like he's at a real match when doing the voiceovers in the game. He was bad on PES2008/09 and on FIFA 2000, even Brooking was better.

I think Lawro and Champion are not the best commentators! Now maybe you are a big fan of them because you love them on BBC and FA Cup...im not faulting you for that. But Andy Grey and Martin Tyler do a pretty good job and given a choice I would prefer them. Credit to FIFA for grabbing them and Im not bitching or saying I want Konami to steal them but I think i would prefer better commentators from the grandads we have on PES. Its like the kits, yes you can do without them but given a choice you would not say no.

Yes the scripts are bad! I know that. We all know that. But in terms of their voices, I think PES needs a fresh start with two new commentators.
