@Techboy, there really is no point trying to tell Fifa players that PES is better whatever the reasons you come up with. Fifa players will play fifa and love it regardless, as a lot of us do with PES.

It's what they are used to and many are unwilling to convert because they know how to play Fifa and even though they are both football games they play completely differently. With that in mind, if you can play Fifa at top level and then try PES, you will be bad at it, even if you are only going to be poor for 10 or 20 games, learning a new style to technically play a similar game seems pointless to many in this day and age of gamers, most want to be good NOW not later, so they won't like a learning curve.

"Learning Curve" lol, how many slatted PES 2012 at the start, whether it was "OMG the defending is so bad" or "WTF passing is so bad" but most of us now have got used to it.

Asking a Fifa player to then switch or as little as try OUR game, they are not going to like it and end up thinking "Fuck it, I'm going back to Fifa"

I find Fifa a decent game, but it bores me. Although I'd disagree with Fifa players saying PES is too fast, I play on -1 game speed and I find if I'm the team with the most possession I can conduct the speed of the game. How many times in real football have you heard a commentator say "They up the tempo when in possession" or "They need to slow the game down to hold on to their lead" ??

2 very similar games that are worlds apart, and for some daft reason, we feel the need to slag off each others preferred game. Silly really, but I guess that's like real life, YES I'm a MUFC fan, so I hate every single MCFC fan....even though we have two very big things in common........We both love the beautiful game and are both extremely passionate about it.

I agree with your points but it bugs me when FIFA players call their game a sim. It clearly isn't. FIFA12 may be a nice game, but to call it a sim is way wide of the mark. Are you watching the Chelsea game tonight? Look at the defensive lines, look how the team pressures in some zones in some situations and doesn't in others. Look how the game is slow when passed around the back, but speeds up when the ball is in each others' halves. Look at defensive lines and player movement?!?!?! It's all there, replicated wonderfully in PES!

Now I'll agree with FIFA players that make say that PES looks ugly, the animations are crap, etc etc, they are right! But when it comes down to which game of football resembles real life, there's only one winner. In FIFA you can pass to each team mate, and not have anyone challenging you, and you can do this until you get right to their penalty area. It's dull repetitive stuff. Because all the players are stuck to their little grids, it's like tic-tac-toe.

Gents, we've somewhat strayed from the subject matter and into a straight FIFA v PES debate. The OP makes a good point about PES capturing realism of Football, for me and my 10 pence worth I think that's part of the problem, its too quick and too competitive. It's just not as fun.

Oh yeh Fifa is no where near a Sim. It's too rigid, if you play 4-4-2 you rarely get e.g. a CMF push forward when a winger is in possession so make a 3rd striker, it's more often than not 2 banks of 4, PES is much more fluid. Players interchange positions much more in PES than in Fifa, players cover gaps more realistically from where players have made runs and lost the ball.

But we can't have a "Complete Sim" of football otherwise we would have to play every game for 90 mins. Some Fifa fans just seem to believe that their game is just that...which it clearly isn't or can't be.

It depends what you're looking for out of the game though Smink.

For me the chase has always been to replicate what I see on the tv, I derive 'fun' out of the fact that my inputs in position x would mirror the inputs of someone IRL doing it. For example, there's a clip tonight (which I have should anyone require 'evidence') where Chelsea are passing the ball round the back, they are doing that because they are trying to make space. The CB finally gets an opportunity to play it forward because obviously one of the Chelsea midfield is dropping deeper making himself available but has the Leverkusen MF right up his arse. The result is a pressured ball back to the CB.

Now all this may seem simple and trivial, after all, all that's happened is that the ball was passed amongst the defence, then a defender passes the ball to a midfielder who was pressured heavily, and the ball was one-touched back to the CB; but it's not trivial or silly, because that's what happens in every football match up and down the world.

So when I'm playing PES, and I play that half risky ball into the centre of the park with one of my CBs, I want the oppo MF to be pressurising my receiver and giving him nudges and fouls etc.

For me the realism IS where the game is.

EVIDENCE OF WHAT I MEAN IS HERE -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp1OBjtJ4XM
from 2.35 - 2.42, where a ball is played to Suarez and he is pressured and nudged.

This is why I talk endlessly about defensive lines, defensive units, pressuring/not pressuring, attacking AI/defensive AI, because ALL THESE ELEMENTS MAKE THE FOOTBALL GAME WHAT IT IS, A LIVING BREATHING THING. Manipulating the game and manipulating space and creating chances in PES because of your knowledge of watching attacking and defensive patterns through 1000's of hours watching football on the tele is just a brilliant feeling.

Things like the passing, the shooting, animations etc etc, these are all secondary to the way footballers react to that ball. You can have the best passing physics, best shooting physics, the best animations, but if the CPU isn't mirroring what goes on IRL on the tv and if my players aren't acting like human beings, some dropping back, some going sideways, some going forward, some keeping still, then you've lost my interest straight away.

PES isn't a hard game, honestly. It's not unfair in terms of blatantly cheating you out of games like previous PES' have; what it is ferocious at is exploiting any human defensive deficiencies. But to balance this fact up, KONAMI have introduced an extraordinary defensive game, which really is phenomenal. You defend properly against the best players (eg your Walcott's, Nani etc etc) and you'll do alright. If you respect the CPU attackers, and use contain jockey so that the defensive AI system can do its thing you'll feel such an overwhelming sense of satisfaction that nothing will match it. Just by player positioning alone you can stall the CPU and make them pass sideways and back, IF YOU USE REAL WORLD LOGIC OF SPACE AND WHO TO MARK AND WHEN.

On a last note guys, and this is no bullshit, but during half time of the Chelsea game I had a sneaky game of FIFA, I changed some sliders and stuff and it played a little better, but guess what, I scored again in the 45th minute AGAIN. This alone is a gamebreaker in my opinion, and immediately disqualifies FIFA to be called a sim (eg constant time scripting).

SMINK - love ya to bits, I will stop with the FIFA jibing now, I'm going to play some PES!!

@Techboy, thats a cracking read lad  (I'm not being sarcastic in case anyone thinks I am).

I agree with you on most of that but feel perhaps Konami's AI somewhat unbalances the playing field along with such a fast paced game. For me, I just can't concentrate for long periods of time at that sort of pace ... maybe I'm just too old for PES
