Up on the D-pad is for shooting left and down is for shooting right (if your opponent's goal is on the right side of the pitch that is, otherwise the other way around). Shot power decides if ball goes high or low.

No, I haven't changed any controls. I just play the game with default settings (apart from reconfiguring some of the buttons) using the left analog controller for controlling where and how my player moves etc., but whenever I want to place a shot I simply move my left thumb and press up or down...

Both. I have a 32" TV that I connect the laptop to with an HDMI-cable, but sometimes I play it on the laptop's screen too.

It plays fine (on medium settings) on my laptop - a Dell Studio XPS 1640 - from 2009. Graphic's card is a Radeon HD 3640. So anything above and beyond that ought to play fine too.

While pressing the shot-button (I believe, it's somewhat of a "reflex" that I never think about).

I experienced the same problems - but then I found out that directing shots using the D-pad improves accuracy a lot, see my post here: http://www.pesgaming.com/showpost.php?p=1853715&postcount=31 Using the D-pad I can now e.g. curl low shots into the corners when I shoot from outside the box...

Very interesting! Which version do you use? Do you need to uninstall pespatch and/or kitserver before using it? Perhaps even un- and reinstall the whole game?

Yes, indeed - v 1.02 together with Jenkey's latest patch makes the game a whole lotta more fun than before! :)
