Empire: Total War

Bwoar; huge bump I know but couldnt be arsed to make a new thread.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/sega-planning-e3-shogun-2-reveal

This may piss off some of you guys who love the idea of a huge world map with every nation available, but sometimes, as with games like GTA, the world can get too big and become to unmanageable and unrealistic.

Shogun was a game I enjoyed a lot, so seeing them go back to this period has me quite excited!!!

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/05/28/son-of-a-shogun-shogun-2-total-war/

multi-staged castle sieges and dynamic terrain that responds to the weather......Set buildings on fire to force garrisoned troops out and use your units’ special abilities to turn the tide of the battle.......Naval combat also offers more variety with the addition of coastal battles. Islands can work as effective cover for your ships, while sand bars and reefs can be used as traps against an enemy fleet

sounds great!!

I heard about this the other day, and hoped it wasn't true. This is a huge step backwards. The next game should have been a full world map set in the mid-19th century - American Civil War, Zulu War, the Crimean War, and general expansion could have been key elements. Things like trains could have been added.

Only thing that sounds interesting, and indeed is much needed, is coastal battles. If they're going to do Japan again, they could at least have added China, Korea and more of Asia.

With the news of this and the shit Peninsular War add-on for Empire, CA is really losing it I feel.

But reading about complaints from Empire, by the sounds of it, the AI CA have been using just isnt up to the task of running an empire that size. If there were faults within the empire map, imagine just how bad they'd be on a full scale.

So they rectify this by going back to a smaller map? There's going to be no variety in this game, it'll be Samurai, Warrior Monks, Naginata, Ninja, Yari units over and over.

Just a quick recommendation for a mod for Napoleon btw. The Khartoum and Zulu mod is fucking incredible. Please download and play it. Its one of the best mods I've ever played. Here are a few screens:

I've thought about buying this game several times but only ever see add-ons for it in stores. I remember really enjoying Shogun: Total War and I notice there's a Shogun 2 coming out so I may have to look into that instead.

I'm pretty sure Napoleon was another which I could only find the extra content rather than the actual game, in stores. It's only £16.99 on amazon so I might give it a go in a few months as I've got plenty of games to be getting on with that are out in the next month - Dead Rising 2, Civilisation V, Fifa 11.

EDIT: I've just realised that mod you posted was for Napoleon, not Empire. I'll definitely have to check that out.

Once you get Napoleon you can download the expansion of the Peninsular War via steam which is very enjoyable I have to say.

i dont have an up-to-date specced pc, mine is quite old, looking at the specs for each total war game the most my pc could handle would be Medieval II, which should i get? i've never had a total war game, but i've always liked the look of it. It looks like a beefed up, and just a lot better than age of empires, and i enjoyed age of empires 2

I would start off with the first medieval total war and then work your way up mate. Age of Empires was shit and I'm sure you will enjoy this game a hell of alot more.

I couldnt find medieval but never mind. I got Rome, im gonna get Medieval II soon, but im gonna play Rome to death first.

Im playing on the easiest difficulty to get used to it. Obviously battles are easy, i was outnumbered by 100 units (300:200), i kept the unit scale down for now and i won easily.

I chose to be the Julii family (northern rome family), they can expand more easily to mainland europe, and there's also Julius Caesar.

It's been around 25 years and ive taken 3 settlements, i already had 2. I dont know if this is good or not. Im at war with germania and gaul, idiots keep demanding land back

At the moment I'm playing the Blue and the Gray mod. Great, great mod, slightly eratic at times as I'm getting a few crashes here and there but the scope of it is unbelievable and of course I start a game off as the Confederate States. The units are amazing. Stonewall Brigade, Louisiana Tigers, Zouaves, Orphan Brigade, Hood's Texans, etc I sent good old Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson south to inflict death and destruction on Mexico from Texas, it fell quickly.

In Kentucky and Missouri Bragg and Johnson were battling it out with Northern Forces. The funniest was when I led a Lee/Longstreet force of some 2,300 men to the outskirts of Washington. I was attacked by around 3,500 men under Grant but I kicked the living shit out of him. The meddling Yankee were sent packing then the Dutch invaded Texas and my game crashed!

Sheer amazingness I have to say.

I just played Empire for the first time, and I'm disgusted. How could it get such high ratings with such poor sound. I'm also amazed at how shit and fakey the units' movement is. Naval battles are a great touch, and so is the whole tech research and whatnot, just like in Shogun 2 (which is awesome though too repetitive), but all the improvements are useless when something so important as battle sounds and unit movement is so bad.

Still, a decent game, but I think I'll get Napoleon now. In the meantime I need a good mod for Empire. At least a decent sound fx mod.

There are a ton of mods mate for Empire. I myself have tried one or two but the game never really did it for me. I enjoyed the wathpath campaign but it was so buggy it crashed all the time.

They should have done Shogun 2 BEFORE Empire. It was a jump to far. I really enjoyed Shogun 2, the Uesugi campaign is literally one of the hardest factions to play in any of the Total War Franchise. The amount of cunts arrayed against you is insane and most of time its impossible.

The expansion Fall of the Samurai was bollocks though, should have done the Japanese Invasion of Korea in the late 16th Century. That would have been much better

I like Empire because of the musket firefights and the naval battles. There's a few great touches that I've seen, so far, like manning of cannons on the walls, or getting inside buildings, but others piss me off immensely. All horses are the same colour. Most units in regiments look the same. I hate how the soldiers spread all over the wall to throw grappling hooks. There are so many graphic bugs as well. It seems like a half arsed effort. Medieval 2 shits all over this game, in terms of battle playability and ambience.

Shogun 2 is just ridiculous. Top notch graphics, nice tech trees, decent variety of units, nice city and region expansion, just like in Empire. The only problem is that it's just Japan. It gets fucking boring. Still a good game because it's a visual orgasm.

Rome 2 better have everything that all the other games have, and more. I'm sick of them omitting shit that was great in previous installments.

It does look amazing from the few screenshots I've seen.

EDIT: I found a sound effects mod which proved a massive improvement, but I'm moving on to Napoleon anyway.

EDIT: I've started a grand campaign as Spain, and I must admit that it's actually a decent game. The fighting also gets more bearable with some of the updates, specially the one that allows all the lines to shoot.

The question now is, do I get to play a grand campaign like this one in Napoleon? BarnDoor
