Report

Honours even in this closely fought game. Group leaders Italy struggled to find a footing in this match, however matched the Swedes on goal chances, although not playing the better football overall. A draw on reflection is a fair result, and one which gives the other three teams in this group a chance. The draw gives Denmark a lifeline, but they HAVE to beat Sweden in their last match to go through, and hope that Italy beat Bulgaria. Bulgaria themselves can also go through in second place if they beat the Italians and Sweden and Denmark draw, so an open group still, but Italy looks favourites to clinch the group due to their win over Denmark.

The game today was a thrilling encounter, with Sweden attacking well on the counter, Ibrahimovic did well on a few occasions just holding up the ball and bringing in support from midfield. The Italians defended well, until Celtic's departing Striker, Henrick Larsson, scored a thunderbolt from outside the box after good work from his strike partner Ibrahimovic, who held up the ball long enough for larsson to get on the end of it, and he produced a great strike to beat Buffon. The Swedes started to press the game, leaving the Italians to play on the break, but Wilhelmsson and Ljungberg played well on the flanks running at the Italian defence. Italy had a few good chances, and were guilty of missing a few headers also, but mostly were left to half chances which they couldn't convert, until the 79th minute. Vieri found space, crossed into the box, and Totti took up position and executed a stunning volley, incidently, similar to that of Wilhelmsson's strike against Bulgaria, so we have yet another candidate for goal of the tournament. So the game finished level, and the group situation looks like this:

group standings:

Italy…… .4………..3

Bulgaria...2……..0
Denmark..1.... -3

yes, Bulgaria and Sweden are tied for second, but Sweden remain in second as they have scored one more goals than Bulgaria, eventhough they have the same goal difference. But either team can qualify now, but as you can clearly see, the different scenarios that have developed now, which is taking this group right down to the wire.

i didn't know that, i thought it was by goal diff first, even when i was talking to t1000v2.0 on msn we were dicussing who's going through considering goal diff first

yeah, its goal difference first, goal diff is 0 for both teams, then it comes down to goals scored, someone correct me if i'm wrong, but this is how i remember it to be...

edit:

ah actually it goes on wins first. So sweden havent won any, its right gedo, if you beat sweden, you'll go through, but they just drew so if you beat them, you will go through by right anyway, by having more points....hmm this is getting complicated, I think the usual way is, wins count first, then goal diff, then actual goals scored isnt it?? hmmm...i'm rusty on this...does someone know the official thing of how it works?

it's not goal difference first, it goes first to a head to head record, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If in the unlikely event they are still tied, it goes to a toss of a coin.

Match day 8

19 June 2004 - Group D

Latvia (T1000v2.0) V Germany (Phatmann2003)

Bessa - Porto

on to Group D now, as Latvia take on Germany, with the Latvians now, fancying themselves to qualify from the group, and a win over germany would make that possible. The Latvian FA apoointed T1000v2.0 as coach fo the remainder of the tournament, and so it will be interesting to see how he does on his managerial debut. Now over for the match.

Stats

This was a match that proved to be a little too much for Latvia who promised much after their draw with the Czech Republic, only to go down 1-0 to the Germans, who proved yet again that they can get a result when the pressure is on. Latvia, who matched the Germans for posession didnt really manage to create many chances on goal, which left Pahars isolated upfront. The Germans had a few good chances, but mostly from distence as Ballack hit 2 good shots at both halves, which went just over. He did get the goal before the end of the first half, as he was put through by Klose, and he hit a great shot just outside the box, which Kolinko may have done better to keep it out, but ti be fair, it was hit hard. Neither side many chances, and most of the game was played in midfield, which suited the Germans, as they were the ones most likely to score. This leaves the Group D table looking like this:
