I once read a post in totalwar.org where this guy compares The Pope and The Church to organized crime. He was spot on.Brilliant game still, playing it for some time now.
I decided to start over as England, tried to rape the Scots in the North after you take over York, although the Pope isn't too happy with that so I'll get them and the Pope later on. You already start off with Caen in France, so they don't pose much of a problem and if you get Brussels(if the Danes didn't already) it will only give you more opporutnities.
The Pope seems eager to start Crusades though.

The Pope is such a manipulative, backstabbing son of a whore.
All he does is send us on crusades and pit Christians against each other.
That's it. I'm going to build cathedrals, recruit priests and slowly take over the Vatican. Cardinal after Cardinal, until the entire council is made up of English clergymen. I'll teach that bastard to mess with me and my plans for world domination.
I won't rest until i control the Church and the Pope is one of ours.

I completely ignored him after he was pissed I went after the Scots, but I took both their settlements in one turn, truly a diabolical scheme. Still those Frenchies are terribly annoying, as are the Danes who churn out units at will and attack my Belgian settlements in a constant rate
